eBay Starter Kit: As a seller, you'll want to learn about the types of fees you'll pay to use eBay's tools and reach out to the site's huge audience. Fee types to know:     

Insertion Fees Picture Services Final Value Fees Listing Upgrades Fees PayPal Fees

Insertion Fees There is a non-refundable Insertion Fee for listing your item on eBay. Insertion Fees vary by the type of listing: Single Quantity, Online Auction Listings 

The Insertion Fee is based on the starting price for your item.

Reserve Price Auction Listings  

The Insertion Fee is based on the reserve price of the item you list for sale. When you list a Reserve Price Auction, you will also be charged a Reserve Price Auction Fee, which is also based upon the reserve price. Reserve Price Auction Fees are fully refundable. At the end of the auction, if your item sells, the Reserve Price Auction Fee is refunded to your account. This also applies to Real Estate. Learn more about Reserve Price Auctions.

Reserve Price Don't want to sell your item below a certain price? Set a reserve price! A reserve price is a tool sellers can use to stimulate bidding on their auction-style item while reserving the right not to sell below a price they have in mind. Many sellers have found that too high a starting price discourages interest in their item, while an attractively low starting price makes them vulnerable to selling at an unsatisfactorily low price. A reserve price helps with this. How does it work? A reserve price is the lowest price at which you are willing to sell your item. If a bidder does not meet that price, you're not obligated to sell your item. You set your reserve price, as well as a starting price, when you list your item. The reserve price is not disclosed to bidders, but they will be told that your auction has a reserve price and whether or not the reserve has been met. All Reserve Price Auctions are subject to a Reserve Price Auction Fee that is refunded when you successfully complete your auction on eBay. If your item does not sell, this fee is not refunded. Leave the reserve price field blank if you don't want to use a reserve price. Restrictions: Reserve Price Auctions are not available for Multiple Item Auctions (Dutch Auctions)

Online Auction Listings (Dutch Auctions) and Multiple Item Fixed Price Listings 

The Insertion Fee is based upon the opening value of the items you list for sale. The opening value is the starting price or the fixed item price multiplied by the quantity of items you offer. The maximum insertion fee for any Multiple Item Listing is $4.80.

Learn more about Multiple Item Listings.

Multiple Item Listings Do you have multiple, identical items for sale? Sell them quickly and easily! There are three ways to sell multiple, identical items on eBay:   

Online auction Fixed Price Lot

Online Auction : List multiple items together in an online auction. The winning bid in a multiple item listing is based on the highest bid per item. Example: Suppose you have 50 hammers, all the same, that you'd like to sell for at least $5.99 each. You would list them as with a quantity of 50 and a starting price of $5.99. Bidders specify both their offered price and the number of items they want. Successful bids must have a higher total bid per item than other bids, regardless of how many items you are bidding on. Reducing this Total Bid Value in subsequent bids is not permitted. Example: For a listing with 10 available items and 2 bidders:  

Bidder A bid for 3 items at $5 each. Bidder B bid for 8 items at $6 each.

In this case, the lowest successful bid is $5. So the outcome of this listing is: 

Bidder B wins 8 items at $5 each.

Bidder A wins 2 items at $5 each. Winning bidders have the right to refuse partial quantities. This means that if you win some, but not all, of the quantity you bid for, you don't have to buy any of them. In the above example, Bidder A bid on 3 items but won only 2 of them. Bidder A can refuse to complete the purchase, as he or she didn't win the quantity they bid on. All winning bidders pay the same price: the lowest successful bid. If there are more buyers than items, the earliest successful bids get the items. Higher bidders get the quantities they've asked for. Fixed Price : List multiple items in one listing with a fixed price for each item. Buyers can choose the quantity they want and pay the set price. Example: Suppose you have 50 hammers that you'd like to sell for $5.99 each. You would list them as with a quantity of 50 and a price of $5.99.Buyers can purchase any available quantity of your item at any time, without waiting for an auction to end. Page 2

11/15/2010

In Both Formats: eBay only permits multi-item listings in which the price times the quantity is less than $100,000. Note: In order to sell with this format, you must: 1) Be ID Verified OR 2) Have a feedback rating of 30 or above and be registered on eBay for 14 days or more. Lot: Sell similar items together in one listing to one buyer (a case of shaving razors, a record collection, etc.). Example: Suppose you have 50 hammers that you'd like to sell together to one buyer for an average price of $5.99 each. To list as a "lot": A) Click the Lot tab in the Quantity section and B) enter "1" in the Number of Lots box and "50" in the Number of Items Per Lot box. You would set the price to $299.50. The winning bidder will win all 50 hammers. Basic Fees The cost to sell on eBay varies depending on which eBay site you're selling on, and how you list your item. When you sell an item, you'll be able to review your fees on the listing form before you submit your listing. The fees fall into 3 categories: 

Insertion fees: When you list an item, you're charged an insertion fee for the listing. The insertion fee is based on the starting price and the category of your item. If you specified a reserve price, the insertion fee is based on the reserve price amount.

Final value fees: If the item sells, you're charged a final value fee. This fee is based on the final sale price and category of the item. It does not include shipping costs.

Listing Upgrade Fees When you list an item on eBay, you're charged an Insertion Fee. If the item sells, you are also charged a Final Value Fee. The total cost of selling an item is the Insertion Fee plus the Final Value Fee. 

If your listing is eligible for a $0.00 insertion fee, your insertion fee will appear as "Free" in the listing form. If you're relisting an item, the relist is eligible for $0.00 insertion fees under the same guidelines as a new listing (as long as it’s an auction-style listing in an eligible category, and falls within the limit of 100 listings in a calendar month). All listings (including relisted and canceled listings) count toward the 100 listings limit. Only auction-style listings are eligible. All other fees, including listing upgrade fees (such as bold or listing in two categories) and final value fees, still apply. All categories are eligible for $0.00 insertion fees except:   

Motors Vehicles Real Estate The following Business & Industrial subcategories: Tractors & Farm Machinery, Heavy Equipment & Trailers, Concession Trailers & Carts, Imaging & Aesthetics Equipment, Forklifts & Other Lifts, Manufacturing Equipment, Metalworking Equipment, and Commercial Printing Presses.

Here's an example of a final value fee calculation for an auction-style listing: 1. You sell an item for $100.00. 2. Your final value fee is 9% of the final sale price, which is $9.00. The maximum final value fee for auction-style listings is $50. For example, if you sell an item for $1,000, you’ll pay only $50, even though 9% of $1,000 is $90. Here's an example of a final value fee calculation for a fixed price listing: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

You sell an item in the Electronics category for $1,500.00. On the first $50.00 you pay 8%, which is $4.00. On the next $950.00, you pay 5%, which is $47.50. On the remaining $500.00, you pay 2%, which is $10.00. Your final value fee is $61.50 ($4.00 + $47.50 + $10.00).

A Note About eBay Fees 

In the event your seller account is suspended for any reason, any amounts due on your Seller account will immediately become due and payable. eBay reserves the right to immediately charge any amounts you have not previously disputed to the billing method that you are using.

Fees pay for the right to sell on eBay. Sellers do not purchase exclusive rights to Web pages on eBay. eBay may, in our sole discretion, and without your consent or payment to you, place third-party advertisements on any Web page within our site. Choose a Good Password: Use the following tips to make it difficult for others to guess your password and to help keep your account secure. Tips Examples Do

 

Review the privacy policies of third parties that offer you services to determine how your information will be protected. If you believe that someone has obtained your password, change it immediately and review our Account Theft information page.

Safety Tips: Be cautious of emails that ask you to submit personal information such as your credit card number or your eBay password. Some members have reported attempts to gain access to their personal information through email solicitations that are made to appear as having come from eBay. These solicitations will often contain links to web pages that will request that you sign-in and submit information. At eBay, we identify these as 'spoofed' emails or websites. Remember, eBay employees will never ask you for your password. If you receive or suspect you have received such an email, do not respond to it or click the links. Immediately send a copy of it to [email protected]. To be sure that you are signing into a genuine eBay website, look at the Address/Location field of your browser. At an eBay Sign-In or log-in page, the URL (link) that appears in the Address/Location field of your browser will begin with "http://cgi.ebay.com/" or "http://cgi3.ebay.com/" (see the following illustrations).

Please note that the above examples apply to the eBay.com website. Our international sites will have slightly different sign-in URLs. A more complete set of URLs is listed below: United States Sites Site

eBay nightmares By Dan Tynan and Christina Wood (March 25, 2005)

One day, you're blithely surfing eBay and stumble across a Ziggy Zebra Beanie Baby--the perfect gift for your little rug rat. So you place a bid, then another bid, and another. Finally, you manage to snag the thing out from under a dozen other eBay buyers. But when the package arrives days later, it's no Beanie Baby. It's not even a zebra. It's hell-spawn evil incarnate, a thing from a world not our own. You've been slimed by the dark forces of eBay. Only a tiny fraction of the 1.3 million daily transactions on Internet auction sites results in fraud. But that still means thousands of people get ripped off each day. In fact, auction fraud accounts for nearly three-quarters of all complaints posted to the Internet Crime Center. And still thousands more experience terrifyingly annoying auction hijinks, including sky-high fees. Don't become a statistic. You can easily protect yourself against auction fraud and related trauma if you follow our advice. Come with us now as we embark on today's episode of eBay nightmares. MONDAY'S MONSTER (nightmare #1 of 5) -

The product that wasn't there

You see a Louis Vuitton purse on eBay for a price too good to resist. So you win the auction, then you wait and you wait, but the purse never arrives. Nondelivery of a product is the most common auction fraud. In Kansas last year, police investigated a woman who was selling designer purses on eBay she didn't actually have in stock. After collecting the money from an auction, she'd go online and try to find a knockoff purse selling for less than the winning bid, then send it on to the buyer. Much of time, though, she didn't bother, and the bidder got nothing at all.

CAN I MURDER THIS MONEY-STEALING MONSTER? To ward off this bad dream, always follow eBay's first commandment: Know thy seller. 1. Check the feedback. Never bid without checking the seller's Feedback Score. You'll find it in the Seller Information box in each auction. Once there, click "Read feedback comments" to see what other customers had to say about the seller. If someone is operating a get-rich-quick scheme--or is just lazy and disorganized--these comments will quickly reveal the seller's weakness. Look for a seller who's been in business for at least three months and has a positive feedback percentage of at least 96 percent. Scammers will find it hard to maintain a positive rating for that long. 2. Dig deeper. Click the seller's name on the auction page to get to the Member Profile, then click "Learn more about me." eBay's seller feedback page can help (Not all sellers provide this info, but if it's you tell the reliable resellers from the there, it will show up right below the "Add rip-off artists. to favorite sellers" link.) Is there anything more than an e-mail address? If not, be wary. If there's a phone number, call it and ask a question about the product. Or simply click Contact Seller and send a message. According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, the buyer knew nothing more about the seller than his or her e-mail address in most cases of nondelivery.

Page 16

11/15/2010

3. Buy from those you trust. If you've not bought from a seller before, see if that person is a member of PayPal Buyer Protection plan, which provides buyers $1,000 of protection against nondelivery and a host of other nightmares. Only sellers who have met PayPal's requirements--for example, a feedback score of at least 50, with at least 98 percent of your feedback deemed positive--can offer this plan. 4. Check your insurance. If you bought from someone not covered by the PayPal plan, eBay will refund up to $200 of the cost (minus a $25 processing fee). However, if you paid by credit card, check with your bank; some cards offer 100 percent guarantees against online fraud.

TUESDAY'S TERROR (nightmare #2 of 5) - The incredible shrinking bargain You snagged that adorable "Boy and Pig" Hummel figurine for a fantastic price. Now the seller is demanding $50 just to ship it. Suddenly, your fabulous deal is turning into a frightful rip-off. Talk about Jekyll and Hyde!

CAN THIS NIGHTMARE BE SOLVED? This is one case where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You essentially agreed when you bid that you would pay whatever the seller thought was fair. So it pays to do your homework: 1. Do the math. eBay makes it easy for sellers to include a shipping cost calculator in with the bid. If the seller has included one, use it before you bid to avoid any unpleasant surprises later. 2. Ask the seller. If there's no shipping calculator, you're either dealing with a novice seller or one who was planning to pad the fees after the auction closed. In that case, you'll need to send the seller a question asking for an estimate of shipping costs to someone in your zip code. If the seller won't agree to a shipping price prior to sale, you should probably steer clear.

Using eBay's shipping calculator can protect you from some nasty surprises later so that it doesn't cost more to send the item than it did to buy it.

3. Hold onto your money. If the shipping fee is way beyond what you agreed to fork out, you can refuse to pay. You should notify the seller of your intent not to pay and see if you can reach a mutual agreement to not complete the transaction. If the seller doesn't agree, eBay can nullify the transaction without penalty to either party. eBay has a wellestablished procedure regarding unpaid items; be familiar with it before you enter a dispute. 4. Watch your (feed) back. If you don't pay, the seller may give you a negative feedback rating, which could mess up your eBay street cred. If this happens to you, file a grievance with eBay. You'll find a contact form on eBay's help page. In cases where the fees were truly unreasonable, eBay will help you recover from the bad rating.

WEDNESDAY'S WITCH (nightmare #3 of 5) - When goods go bad So you bid on an antique handmade German violin and got a factory-fresh one made in Taiwan. You thought you were buying a hard-to-find Disney classic on VHS but got a home-burned DVD with the title scrawled in marker. You snagged a great deal on a portable DVD player at $100, only to find out that all you've purchased is a URL where can get a $200 discount on one. (Don't laugh--this happened to one CNET reader.)

CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SHILLS? Page 17

11/15/2010

Though the line between a royal deal and a rip-off can be fuzzy, you can usually avoid unpleasant surprises. Here's how. 1. Read the description carefully. If information is missing, ask the seller questions about it. No photos? Ask the seller to e-mail you some. If the item is a camcorder, a laptop, or a video console-some of the items most prone to fraud-check with the manufacturer to find out if the seller is an authorized reseller of such goods. 2. Do a price check. Use sites such as CNET Shopper.com to find out what these things cost in the real world. If a product typically retails for $1,000 and the seller is accepting winning bids of $100, there may be something amiss.

When buying a high-ticket item on eBay, look for the PayPal Buyer Protection icon. Your purchase may be insured for up to $1,000.

3. Check the return policy. If the seller doesn't have a return/refund policy or it says something like "all sales are final," check the Seller Information for a PayPal Buyer Protection icon (a tiny blue-and-white shield with a check mark on it). If there's a dispute, PayPal will intercede and refund up to $1,000, if necessary. 4. Don't get faked out. If the "Gucci" shoes you think you bought are really labeled "Gootchie," you know you got a knockoff. It's illegal to sell stolen or counterfeit goods on eBay, so be sure to report it to eBay (using its contact form) and the Internet Fraud Complaint Center. You could also demand a refund from the seller, but don't expect much of a response.

THURSDAY'S THRILLER (nightmare #4 of 5)

Bidder beware! You're merrily bidding on a Scooby Doo lunchbox to complete your collection when someone leaps into the auction, bids up the price, then disappears at the last minute--leaving you with the choice of either walking away or paying too much. This may have been a legitimate bidder who simply bailed when the price got too high or a friend of the seller who is only there to drive up the price.

CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SHILLS?? Start with these tips. 1. Research the bidder. Click the bidder's name to view his profile, then check out other auctions this person has participated in. Is this a repeating pattern? Is the seller always the same? Does the bidder ever win the auction?

2. Spill the beans.

Page 18

11/15/2010

If you think you are dealing with a shill bidder-someone who is bidding only to drive the price up with no intention of buying--report it to eBay using the contact form on eBay's help page. eBay has nifty (but topsecret) software that can quickly tell if someone is shill bidding. If eBay can prove it, it will suspend the bad guys. 3. Beware of scam bidders. If someone contacts you directly, claiming to be the seller and offering to sell you the item immediately, provided you're willing to wire funds or send a check to a P.O. Box, just say no. That person is trying to lure you off eBay, where you'll be completely unprotected. Report anyone trying to short-circuit an auction to eBay by going to the help section and clicking Contact Us.

FRIDAY'S FIEND (nightmare #5 of 5)

If you have a problem with an auction, such as a scammer trying to lure you outside the auction site to take your money, use eBay's customizable contact form to file a complaint.

ATTACK OF THE PHISHERS You open your in-box and find e-mail from eBay or PayPal, warning that your account has been compromised by identity thieves and that you must log on immediately to verify your information. Sounds scary, right? But here's the really terrifying part: that e-mail is a fake, and so is the Web site it's sending you to. If you follow the instructions and provide your account info, so-called phishers will steal your identity. You may soon find that these scammers have used your data to purchase all kinds of things on eBay you've never heard of, and the sellers are demanding payment. Your eBay reputation and your credit rating will be in tatters. And that's just for starters.

CAN YOU EXORCISE PHISHING DEMONS? Fortunately, there are ways to fight the phishers: 1. Spot phony e-mail. Neither eBay nor its PayPal subsidiary will ever send you e-mail with live links inside it, says eBay's Jim Griffith, dean of eBay Education. So no matter how real they may look, be aware that any PayPal or eBay e-mail containing live links is an outright fake (also known as spoof e-mail). 2. Think before you click. Never click the live link inside such e-mail; if you want to check your account status, manually type eBay or PayPal's address into your browser and log on normally. 3. Make sure the site is secure. eBay and PayPal use SSL encryption to secure your login info. That means the Web address should start with https: (the s stands for secure), and there should be a tiny, locked icon in the lower-right corner of your browser.

This e-mail may looks genuine, it even sports the right logos and live links to eBay, but it's really a phishing scam designed to steal your identity.

4. Double-check the URL. Some phishers use foreign character sets to create URLs close enough to fool users into thinking they're on the real site. Make sure the site you're logging on to is really www.paypal.com and not www.paypäl.com. 5. Rat out the bad guys. Identity theft is a serious crime, and the FBI is actively investigating phishing scams and other activities related to ID theft. eBay is also investigating spoof e-mail. If you get phisher e-mail that claims to be from eBay or PayPal, forward it to [email protected] and file a complaint with the Internet Fraud Complaint Center.
