Eliot-Hine​ ​Middle​ ​School​ ​Modernization​ ​Project Edited​ ​11/27/2017

Eliot-Hine​ ​Middle​ ​School​ ​scheduled​ ​for​ ​comprehensive​ ​modernization​ ​with​ ​construction​ ​to begin​ ​Summer​ ​2018.​ ​Planning​ ​began​ ​in​ ​2016​ ​with​ ​the​ ​development​ ​of​ ​an​ ​educational specification,​ ​community​ ​engagement​ ​meetings,​ ​and​ ​a​ ​feasibility​ ​study.​ ​The​ ​‘new’​ ​Eliot-Hine Middle​ ​School​ ​will​ ​provide​ ​a​ ​learning​ ​environment​ ​that​ ​is​ ​safe,​ ​universally​ ​accessible,​ ​and comfortable​ ​for​ ​students. Project​ ​Timeline All​ ​modernization​ ​projects​ ​will​ ​have​ ​one​ ​year​ ​of​ ​planning​ ​and​ ​approximately​ ​three​ ​years​ ​of construction.​ ​ ​This​ ​project​ ​is​ ​currently​ ​in​ ​the​ ​design​ ​phase​ ​of​ ​planning.​ ​Once​ ​an​ ​architect​ ​is selected,​ ​the​ ​project​ ​will​ ​move​ ​into​ ​its​ ​next​ ​stage​ ​of​ ​design.

Scope​ ​of​ ​Work A​ ​feasibility​ ​study​ ​has​ ​been​ ​completed​ ​by​ ​Shinberg​ ​Levinas​ ​architects​ ​in​ ​Spring​ ​2017.​ ​ ​Through this​ ​study,​ ​Shinberg​ ​Levinas​ ​worked​ ​with​ ​the​ ​community​ ​to​ ​define​ ​their​ ​vision​ ​for​ ​this​ ​project, and​ ​map​ ​out​ ​a​ ​program​ ​for​ ​a​ ​480-student​ ​middle​ ​school.​ ​This​ ​enrollment​ ​projection​ ​of​ ​480 students​ ​will​ ​ensure​ ​that​ ​the​ ​Eliot-Hine​ ​community​ ​will​ ​be​ ​supported​ ​as​ ​it​ ​grows​ ​over​ ​time.​ ​ ​In 1200​ ​First​ ​Street,​ ​NE​ ​|​ ​Washington,​ ​DC​ ​20002​ ​|​ ​T​ ​202.442.5885​​ ​|​ ​F​ ​202.442.5026​ ​|​ ​dcps.dc.gov

addition,​ ​Shinberg​ ​Levinas​ ​determined​ ​there​ ​will​ ​be​ ​approximately​ ​15,000​ ​square-feet​ ​of​ ​excess space​ ​after​ ​the​ ​full​ ​modernization​ ​project. Swing-Space​ ​Plans Eliot-Hine​ ​will​ ​swing​ ​‘internally,’​ ​meaning​ ​that​ ​part​ ​of​ ​the​ ​school​ ​will​ ​be​ ​under​ ​construction while​ ​the​ ​school​ ​community​ ​occupies​ ​another​ ​part​ ​of​ ​the​ ​building​ ​that​ ​is​ ​not​ ​being​ ​disturbed​ ​by construction. Communication​ ​Plan Communication​ ​regarding​ ​this​ ​project​ ​is​ ​shared​ ​with​ ​the​ ​School​ ​Improvement​ ​Team​ ​(SIT)​ ​every 8​ ​weeks,​ ​and​ ​to​ ​the​ ​Ward​ ​6​ ​community​ ​via​ ​quarterly​ ​community​ ​meetings.
