ICE CARVING CLUB IS “CHILL” The Culinary Program gives many opportunities to become artistic. Many of the students in the program think outside the box for any dish, and to any carvings they make. In the past few years, the Ice Carving Club has made a tremendous amount of ice sculptures for many events. Such as the seahorse and the gator head, the club has come a long way to design the sculptures. Each sculpture grows from each event, from a pineapple, as the symbol for hospitality, to a big gator head with intricate designs. None of this can happen without the members of the club, giving it their one hundred percent to make each sculpture come alive. To reward them for their hard work and to give them ideas in the future, the club will be going to the Gaylord Palms on December 1st, to see ICE. ICE is a chilling event that happens mainly in November to January. The theme this year is said to be Charlie Brown, and the club is excited to see it. Many of the items in the event will be sculpted out of ice, and to the club that is their goal, to master the art of ice sculpture. The ice artisans come from China to create ICE, and the club will go to them for inspiration. Ice carving experience is not easy, but the group that runs Ice Carving Club is willing to take the challenge. Ice Carving Club is one big, freezing family, and the members can all agree, that the whole club in general stick together, and they will do everything they can to make the owner of the sculpture and everyone around it have a smile.

SENIOR IB STUDENTS TOK TRIP

TEACHERS WORKING TOWARDS

Senior IB students spent Thursday, October 20, at the U.F. College of Forestry’s Austin Cary Educational Center completing a series of workshops centered around the Theory of Knowledge component of the IB Diploma. Using a conference-style format, students completed morning rotations in which they explored knowledge issues related to history, biology, English and ethics. Participating teachers were Ms. DeHart, Dr. Ewert, Dr. Rehm, Dr. Schmidt, Madame Torres and Ms. Zara-Smith.

ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

They also heard from two university professors. Anita Anantharam, Professor of Gender Studies and a newly appointed Entrepreneurial Fellow, spoke about the college experience and how colleges today are looking for students to have diverse backgrounds and the ability to collectively solve problems, skills which the IB program encourages. Gerald Murray, professor emeritus in Anthropology, spoke on the nature of language as a way of knowing. He provided linguistic and historical background on two creole languages, Haitian creole and Gullah, and gave students an opportunity to learn to speak some creole. In order to provide a chance to be outside and creatively “think outside the box,” the seniors completed in a team challenge in which they created a structure composed of natural materials designed to hold a water balloon off the ground. The remainder of the time engaged students in peer editing one another’s ToK essays, one of two assessments that determines their ToK score for IB, as well as reviewing the format and an example of the second assessment, the ToK presentation.

In order to provide appropriate support to students, the following as part of their professional credentials. Jane Alford is adding ESOL and the reading endorsement, Heather Christian and Ann Dunn are participating in ESOL training, and Amanda Otto and Selby HemmansRich are both adding the reading endorsement.

EHS STUDENT WINS ESSAY CONTEST Sophomore Anna Jordan was published in the Gainesville Sun on September 18. She wrote the winning essay in a contest sponsored by Government teacher Mrs. Politowicz. Students were asked to respond to the controversy regarding NFL players refusing to stand for the national anthem at football games. Students analyzed the relationship of their action to the material they studied in class regarding symbolic speech and the First Amendment. Entries were submitted to the Gainesville Sun, and Opinions Editor Nathan Crabbe judged the entries. Anna’s column was published in the opinions page on the weekend that coincided with National Constitution Day, which is celebrated September 17 of every year. The runner-up was sophomore Sophia Sanchez. Both students were awarded $50 Best Buy gift cards, which were donated by a generous parent who supported the contest.
