For every 27 people on the globe there is a cow. From 2000 to 2009 for every 25 additional people there is an additional cow.
GLOBAL DAIRY GENETICS MARKET •Market growing rapidly in past decade – US exports increased from 8.3M doses in 2000 to 14.9M in 2010 •Driven by desire to increase production and efficiency •World market estimated at 270M
NEW TECHNOLOGY DRIVING MAJOR CHANGES IN INDUSTRY • Gender sorted semen Female or male Technology improving, but still challenges Not all bulls can be sorted Fertility lower than conventional semen
NEW TECHNOLOGY DRIVING MAJOR CHANGES IN INDUSTRY • Genomics Biggest change since liquid nitrogen Utilized in breeding programs around the world Breeding values on young animals Huge change in cost structure
TECHNOLOGY GAPS– CHALLENGES TO SMALLHOLDERS • Access to AI – training, technicians, education, liquid nitrogen • “Short-cut” mentality – buy or use latest technology to make reports look good at government level when lower tech will deliver better results with lower cost • Lack of phenotype data to develop own breeding programs • New product development very expensive
NEW GENETIC PRODUCTS • Gender sorted semen Significant research underway to improve Current cost too high for most smallholders Improvements in production efficiency and fertility level will bring cost down
NEW GENETIC PRODUCTS • Genomics Low density and sequencing Ability to measure disease resistance, health traits, feed efficiency, methane production, polled, specific proteins, … Synthetic breeds combining local and international breeds?
NEW GENETIC PRODUCTS • Other opportunities…….. Long-lasting semen not requiring liquid nitrogen Products to assure cold-chain is intact IVF embryo production Genetic testing of embryos and replacements
Will smallholders be able to benefit from these technologies? • Yes!! Produce animals that are more productive as human population increases and there is more competition for resources Increase efficiency of production
Are genetics scale neutral? •Genetics are scale neutral – Ability to manage genetics is not scale neutral. •Education is very important to help producers manage a different type of animal. •Unique products for smallholders might not be developed without public/private partnerships
Will there be synergies? • Commercial (large) farms will initially drive demand for new technology. • If service provider can operate or be established in a cost effective manner, products will also be utilized by smallholders. • Need to establish market linkage to have farmers produce what customer wants.
How to facilitate access to new technologies? • Establish appropriate industry standards – domestic and imported products • Enable and encourage alliances with global partners • For local breeds – collect phenotypic data to help breed improvement • Direct subsidies are long-term detriment
CONCLUDING STATEMENTS • Dairy market will continue to expand • Need to increase both production and efficiency • AI business is undergoing significant global change, driven by introduction of new technologies • New technologies provide opportunities for use by smallholders
