Epidemiology of Pterygium. • The presence of pterygia has been reported from areas throughout world, showing marked geographical differences in frequency and severity of the condition.
Anderson in 1954 • Among the first to collect the information about distribution of Ptreygia world wide was anderson in 1954.
Cameron 1965 • In 1965 Cameron published a comprehensive review of data available at that time on frequency of pterygium.
Higher Prevalence of Pterygium in Outdoor Worker Group. • Comparing the various data most of which originated from hospital based studies cameron succeeded in presenting a convincing over all picture and drew the conclusion that the prevalence of Pteregia varied with the latitude. • It occurs most frequently in populations located near to the equator and Laborers who work out doors or in specific factory environments. • There is higher prevalence of pterygium in farmers, postal workers, saw mill, and welders.
Incidence • A study in Australia showed that pterygium occurred in 12 % of Australians who attended the Hospitals. • A population based survey conducted in rural southern China demonstrated a Pterygium prevalence of 33 %. • In the United States Pterygium is common in Southern and Western States and in rural populations throughout the United States the incidence is 10 %.
Incidence in Pakistan. • In Pakistan there is no any population based survey or Hospital based data on prevalence of Pterygium.
Hospital Based Data in CMC H Eye Department Larkana. • Hospital based data in CMC Hospital Larkana Eye Department, the prevalence of Pterygium is 25 % in persons attending the Hospital who come from Jacobabad, Kashmore and Dera Murad Jamali Districts. • It is 20 % in persons come to Hospital from Kamber, Shadadkot District. • While it is 14 % in persons attending Hospital from Larkana District.
Low Prevalence of Pterygium in Larkana. • The low prevalence of Pterygium in Larkana District is possibly due to available Medical Facilities, Health education, awareness and increased literacy rate.
