Excision Official Contest Rules
Excision, the “What Is Bioinformatics?” blog, and the “What Is Bioinformatics?” promotional Facebook® page are all the intellectual property of Jessime Kirk (hereafter identified as “the sponsor”, contact information below). Sponsor contact information: Jessime Kirk,
[email protected], 325 Sonoma Way, Chapel Hill, NC 27516. NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY to participate in the Excision contest. Entry in the Excision contest consists of “liking” the “What Is Bioinformatics?” promotional Facebook ® page at the following URL: http://www.facebook.com/WhatIsBioinformatics/. It DOES NOT consist of any form of payment or other notable consideration, including (but not limited to) money, donation, registration form, personal information, and subscription. Participation in the Excision game without liking the aforementioned Facebook® page is permitted (and encouraged) but does not constitute entry in the Excision contest. Formal contest entry by liking the promotional page is required to be eligible for prizes and hints that assist in contest completion. The Excision contest does not involve chance and therefore does not constitute a lottery or a sweepstakes. Any registered user of Facebook® is permitted to enter the contest, regardless of age, who is a resident of the United States. By virtue of Facebook’s registration requirements, participants must be age thirteen (13) or older to enter. For international participants, contest eligibility is determined by the laws and regulations of the participant’s country of residence. In the case of a winner who is a resident of a country outside the United States, eligibility for prizes will be determined on an individual basis at the conclusion of the contest. If an individual’s country of residence prohibits entry in this contest, they are still welcomed and encouraged to participate in the Excision game without formal contest entry. The Excision contest begins upon launch of the Facebook® promotional page on June 22, 2015. The contest continues until a winner has been determined, and new participants are accepted until the conclusion of the contest (or until June 22, 2016, at 11:59 PM EDT if no contestant has completed contest requirements by the time). The contest consists of ten (10) levels which vary widely in difficulty and measure the participants’ ability to learn and execute tasks related to bioinformatics in order to solve a series of online puzzles. The final task involves e-mailing the sponsor with a piece of information acquired during the final level. The sponsor alone will judge that a contestant has successfully completed the contest based on a completely objective piece of information included in the aforementioned email. His decision is final. The prize for being the first participant/entrant to complete the skill-based challenge contained within the Excision contest is fifty (50) US dollars, payable to the prize-winner in the form of (a) cash, (b) check, or (c) donation in prize-winner’s name to charity of prize-winner’s choice. The prize-winner determines method of payment. Each entrant’s odds of winning are directly proportional to the skill and commitment level to completing the challenge contained within the contest and inversely proportional to the number of formal entrants. The sponsor reserves the right to post the name of the winner of the contest on the “What Is Bioinformatics?” blog and Facebook® promotional page. The sponsor also honors the right of any entrant or legal entity to request the name of the contest winner. The winner’s name will be available on the Facebook® promotional page within two (2) days of contest completion. If the first entrant to complete the contest is ineligible due to international law or inability to be announced as winner by name, the second entrant to successfully complete the contest will be named the winner. This prize distribution strategy then applies to the third entrant to complete the contest, the fourth, and so on, as applicable. Hints that assist in contest completion may be awarded to contest participants on basis of referral of other participants to like the promotional Facebook® page. The sponsor reserves the right to disqualify any entrant that is responsible for any illegal, vulgar, defamatory, obscene, lewd, or inappropriate content that appears on the promotional Facebook® page, on the “What Is Bioinformatics?” blog, or in the sponsor’s email inbox. The sponsor and his affiliates are not responsible for lost e-mails or any other technical errors that may occur during the contest. No individual responsible for the creation or testing of the Excision game or the launch of the Excision contest will be eligible to win any prize. No immediate family member of the sponsor or co-creator will be eligible to win any prize. Participation in this contest is VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW. Once the contest has begun, these rules must be followed exactly and may not change during the course of the contest, except under extreme and unusual circumstances. Beginning the first level of the contest at the “Base Camp” blog post on the “What Is Bioinformatics?” blog implies agreement with all of the above rules and conditions.
