Principal, Melrose Leadership Academy Oakland Unified School District Briefly describe your journey from teacher to Principal. Why did you want to become a school leader? I began teaching in Seattle in 1982 and moved to Oakland with my family in 1984 to raise our children in a diverse community. I taught at Stonehurst, Jefferson and in 1988, I began working at Melrose Elementary School. I was a mentor teacher, Bay Area Writing Consultant and a staff development coordinator. I became a school leader because the needs of the community required it of me.
What made you decide to become a Principal in OUSD? I never intended to be a principal. I was asked to step into the role while the principal of Melrose Elementary School took a three month maternity leave. She never came back. That was 22 years ago.
How would you best describe your role as Principal of your school? My role as the principal of Melrose Leadership Academy is to ensure that our decisions and interactions with each other are guided by our vision and to support members of our community, (students, staff and families) to bring what they have to give in service of our vision.
What gets you most excited each day to be Principal at your school? I am excited when I see students, staff and families engaged in addressing complex issues that are meaningful to the community; when they take initiative and take responsibility for their own learning through inquiry and restorative practices.
What is your biggest accomplishment as a Principal in OUSD? My biggest accomplishment in OUSD is having founded Melrose Leadership Academy, a TK-8 dual language, Expeditionary Learning, diverse public school where members of the community can be themselves, share the joy of learning and help to build a better world.
What advice do you give students and parents when they first arrive at your school? MLA is a dual language school. All students learn English and Spanish, but we are not a language school. We are a community focused on creating a better world for the members of our school and Oakland by focusing on issues of social justice. Understanding each other at a deep level by speaking the same language allows us to be allies in this work.
