… Names in Exodus Chapter 31

Expounding the Deeper Meaning of the Names in Exodus Chapter 31, Verses 1 and 6 (Judah, Bezaleel, Uri, and Hur)

Exodus 31:1-3 "[1] And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, [2] See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: [3] And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,"

The names Bezaleel, Uri, Hur, and Judah are full of deep meanings which Hebrew concordances and God's Spirit can reveal to us believers. There is a reason why the Holy Scriptures are God-breathed or inspired by God. They are full of rich meanings and truths. Some of these truths are deeper than the surface level and are discovered by God's Spirit and also with the help of Hebrew or Greek concordances. (Note: Concordances offer many definitions to a word. I recommend seeking God about which definition specifically applies to the Hebrew or Greek word you are viewing in the context of the sentence it appears in.) Let's look at these names and find out the meaning of each name in Exodus 31:1-2. The meanings I have written down come from seeking God in prayer about each name. What He has shown me is based on the Hebrew derivation of each name. I recommend you seek God about these meanings I've given, if you want to know more about them.

◼ Name: Bezaleel is Betsalel (bets-al-ale') in Hebrew. Strong's # (Exhaustive Concordance Number): 1212.

Derivation: This word comes from two words tsel and 'el. Tsel (#6738) means defense, shade (acc. to Strong's), shelter, and protection (acc. to NAS Exhaustive Concordance). El (#410) means: "God, ... great, ... mighty one, ..." (acc. to Strong's). Meaning: "One who is protected by God." Or, "One who is shaded and sheltered by the Almighty God.” (Since Exodus 31:2 says that Betsalel (Bezaleel) is filled with the Spirit of God, we can add this meaning to the name Betsalel: "One who is filled with the Spirit of God.") For Spiritual Victory, One Can Say Aloud: "I am one who is protected, shaded, and sheltered by the loving Almighty God." "I am filled with God's Spirit, since I am a believer in Jesus as my Lord and Savior." "I am a Betsalel." Insight: Since the Scriptures were written for our instruction, we can apply them to ourselves. So, we Christians can know that we are protected by God and sheltered in His arms. Deuteronomy 33:25-27 says how Abba Father God is our Refuge and that underneath of us are His everlasting arms. Abba God, who dwells with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, in a believer's spiritual heart 1

(John 14:15-24), rushes to deliver us if we call on Him and trust in Him. And, our Almighty Abba Father God will destroy the demonic creatures who are our enemies and who have fought strongly against us. Deuteronomy 33:25-27 "[25] Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be. 26. There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky. 27. The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them. __________________

◼ Name: Uri is Uri (oo-ree') in Hebrew. Strong's #: 221.

Derivation: Uri comes from 'uwr. Uwr (#217) means "fire, light" (acc. to Strong's). Meaning: "One who is of the light." Or, "One who walks in the light." One Can Say Aloud: "I am one who walks in the light of God's Word because I am choosing to love and obey God and His Word." "I am an Uri." Insight: We Christians are of the light and we walk in the light if we are truly God's children. 1 John 1:510 says that if we walk in the light, we will have spiritually intimate fellowship (and communion) with Abba Father God (see verse 5-7). The light is God's Word (the Bible) and righteousness. Walking in the light is walking in obedience to God's Word. This happens by depending on God for guidance in obeying Him and by choosing to focus on the truth and on who God is. 1 John 1:5-10 "[5] This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us."

◼ Name: Hur is Chur (khoor) in Hebrew. Strong's #: 2354.

Derivation: According to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance, Chur (#2354) is from chuwr (#2353). According to Strong's, chuwr (#2353) is "From chavar; white linen -- white." 2

Meaning: "One whose heart is spiritually white and pure." Or, "One whose spiritual linen garments are clean or white." One Can Say Aloud: "I am one whose heart is white and pure, like white linen, because I am walking in the light of God's Word, by His Spirit." "I am a Chur." Insight: By the blood of Jesus Christ we are made clean and our spiritual garments are made white, instead of being stained with sin. Abba Father God desires us to have hearts that are clean and pure (symbolized by white linen). Jesus taught this truth in Matthew 5:8:"Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." Revelation 19:7-8 says that the Bride of Christ has made herself ready, which is prior to Christ's physical appearance in the earth, on His white horse, with an army of saints (believers) following. His bride is clothed in "fine linen, clean and white". This is an actual clothing material that the believers will wear and it also symbolizes the righteousness of saints (those who are walking in obedience to God). Revelation 19:7-8 "[7] Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. [8] And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints."

◼ Name: Judah is Yehudah (yeh-hoo-daw') in Hebrew. Strong's #: 3063.

Derivation: Yehudah comes from yadah (#3034) (acc. to Strong's). Yadah (#3034) means giving thanks, praise, and [to] glorify [God] (acc. to NAS Exhaustive Concordance). Meaning: "One who praises God." Or, "One who gives thanks and worship to God." One Can Say Aloud: "I am one who desires to give Abba Father God praise, worship, and thanksgiving as I delight in Him and rest in His love." "I am a Yehudah." Insight: We Christians are people who praise, give thanks to, and who worship the loving Almighty God, who is our caring Abba Father. But, this worship and praise is not performance or works. It is just focusing on Abba God and on who He is. It is enjoying deep fellowship and intimacy with Abba God. And in that place of knowing our loving Abba Father's great, deep, cherishing, embracing, passionate love for us, we can worship and praise Him in spirit and truth from our hearts. Let us rest in God's love and receive it by our choice to believe His Word, and believe His love, and relax as we think about Him.

Conclusion In conclusion, we Christians can meditate on this truth and speak this truth aloud to ourselves. Speaking the truth aloud, and choosing to believe it, will bless us and overcome snares (wiles) of the devil, which are temptations and traps of sin (Ephesians 6:10-20). Revelation 12:11 says: "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death." Context: Revelation 12:9-11 "[9] And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. [10] And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

[11] And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death."

Revelation 12:11 says that believers in Jesus Christ, the Savior, overcome the devil by the blood of the Lamb (Jesus); and by the words they speak in testimony; and by the fact that they are not loving their lives in this world and dying to themselves so that they may truly live. This is losing one's (worldly) life for the sake of Christ. They are choosing to not follow fleshly or worldly things, but follow God and His Word. This is being willing to die for Christ, but also being willing to live for Him each day and night in intimate fellowship with our loving Abba Father God. Getting back to Revelation 12:11, when we speak the truth of God's Word about God and ourselves aloud, we are overcoming the devil's snares and power. With that truth in mind, we can claim the meanings of the names in Exodus 31:1-3 for ourselves and personalize them. This will defeat the attacks of the devil that come quite often. But, they will weaken as we put our faith in God's Word and claim and speak God's Word out loud. God will bless us as we choose His ways (Psalm 37:4).
