BACKGROUND Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital is a leading medical center providing state-of-the-art technology and services to patients throughout the Shandong province of China. In operation for more than 50 years, the facility brings healthcare, education, research, rehabilitation, and emergency services together under one roof. Under the jurisdiction of the Shandong Health Bureau, it is the affiliate hospital of Shandong University. There are more than 50 departments and 1,400 beds. The hospital’s IT infrastructure has developed and expanded at a steady rate to include critical systems such as the hospital information system (HIS), laboratory information system (LIS), human resources (HR), insurance, finance, operations, and equipment monitoring systems. The main HIS runs on UNIX residing on IBM DB2 servers; other systems run on Oracle and Microsoft SQL databases. CHALLENGE In 2009, after implementing the main HIS, the hospital replaced its backup software and converted from physical tape to a virtual tape methodology. Although this improved backup operation to a point, it was unable to fulfill the hospital’s recovery time and recovery point objectives (RTO/RPO) for data. Wei Ren, Principal Technical Engineer of the Information Center, explains: “Our data could only be restored to the status of the previous day, and system restores took a long time.
