PR E SI D E N T’ S L E TTE R Well, 60 degrees in Kansas on the last weekend of January is just a little out of the ordinary. So you say get the Mooney out and FLY…..Nope doing another important FDA priority……Mission Dentistry. The Kansas Mission of Mercy was happening on this beautiful weekend. The two day event provided over $1,200,000 worth of dentistry to 1231 folks that really needed the dental help. Providing Fillings, Cleanings, Extractions and Pediatric dental needs to Kansan’s who were willing to spend the day waiting their turn for treatment. Your first lady, Kate, kept the Oral Surgery patients flowing to the Oral Surgeons and your President ended the two day event with his normal blisters of the right hand. Yep you take enough teeth out with those Iron Forceps you will have the opportunity to return home very, very tired. This was my 14th MOM Mission 12 in Kansas and one each in Missouri and Nebraska as well as a RAM event in Tennessee. Over the years I have really understood the dental needs out there amongst our neighbors. These events are a great way to use you dental abilities to help your fellow neighbor. There are many Mission opportunities out there and I am challenging each and every Flying Dentist to participate in such a great event. Whether it is a Caribbean fly in or RAM (Remote Area Medical) Mission or a Mission of Mercy in your state. You will be rewarded more than you will ever imagine.
Now after you have finished your feel good moment it is time to work on your Pilotage Skills. We all need to get in touch with our favorite Certified Flight Instructor and get in that wonderful flying machine and work on those rusty skills. Mark it in the Log book and get yourself signed up for that Safety Raffle at the National Meeting in Cody, Wyoming. Did I say you had to be present to win!!! Yep another fine detail that will let you cross off that busy Dental office calendar and obtain great Continuing Dental Education as well as rub shoulders with your FDA family. As Flying Dentists it is imperative to be at the top of our game whether that is Flying or performing dental treatments. Let’s get in
touch with that CFI and burn some of that CHEAP aviation fuel!!! That way we will be able to perform those cross country trips to ALL the FDA meetings to obtain that wonderful continuing education opportunities. Hope you all are having a safe and wonderful winter. Remember Keep the Oily Side Down and Gear Extended to Land Bart and Kate Bycroft

FLYING 2016 Annual Meeting - Cody, Wyoming June 24-27, 2016 Just 5 months away from great FDA Dental CE, mountain flying seminar, Yellowstone Park, and renewing friendships with your FDA friends. We have been giving you Cody information in the August-January Newsletters, check them out if you need to at www.flyingdentists.org. Registration is enclosed in this newsletter. It is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Follow the checklist, a lot like flying an airplane. We have been in regular contact with a large group of your FDA Kids who grew up attending this meeting and they are emailed this newsletter and their own registration form. (Hint, hint: they get a substantial discount). We hope to see many of them and their own families. The schedule is included here but remember some of the Cody attractions you want to see on your own. • 6PM Gunfight in the street, Irma hotel • 8PM Cody Rodeo every night all summer • Cody Cattle Company chuck wagon dinner & show • Country Music show across the street from the Irma • BBCOW It would take 3 days to see all of this museum • Buffalo Bill Dam & Reservoir • Dude Ranches & trail rides, our FDA kids are going on one.
• Heart Mountain, Japanese Internment camp during WW II • Yellowstone National Park The FDA has some fun planned also. A mountain flying seminar Saturday afternoon. Gary Stewart has coordinated our members who have LSA’s and homebuilts to bring them to Cody. Cirrus plans to bring 2 planes to show…no, not the jet. Good Dental CE and our own FDA Chuck Wagon BBQ Monday night. Plan on packing your boots instead of your neck ties. Lynn Keener has planned a great River Float on the Shoshone Monday afternoon from 1-3:30PM. This is for 3 years and up. The little people get put in the middle of a 10 man raft, surrounded by us big folks and off we go with our guides. They plan to put in above town, float to below town, and the return bus ride will stop at the Holiday Inn to give Mom a head start on getting ready for the Final Banquet while Dad goes for the car. Down the hall from our Reception and Banquet there will be a Kids Pizza Party with arts and crafts and entertainment. This one is free Mom and Dad so sign them up and you can still “peek in”.
Time to take control of your office schedule, block yourself out, shine your boots and bring the family to Cody. Follow the Registration checklist, especially the part about renting your car before April 1 to get the 15% FDA early discount with your AOP card.

FLYING Fall Board Meeting Duluth, MN Sept 29-Oct 1, 2016 The FDA fall board meeting will be held Saturday morning September 29 at the Cirrus factory on Duluth International airport (KDLH). The Cirrus company has kindly offered us meeting rooms and a factory tour. Remember, all FDA members are encouraged to attend the board meeting. Late September is a perfect time to visit the historic inland port city of Duluth. It’s cool, the fall foliage is at peek color, it’s too late for most convective weather and too early for ice. Besides the Cirrus factory there are maritime museums, the great lakes aquarium, the Glensheen Mansion, breweries, Indian casinos and more. Come early or stay late. Go charter fishing on Lake Superior or take the scenic and historic drive up the north shore of Lake Superior visiting the many state parks, waterfalls, trails, lighthouses and historic sites. http:// www.visitduluth.com/ Save the dates. Lodging details in next month’s newsletter.
Meeting agenda: Thursday, September 29th, early arrivals. Friday, September 30th, arrivals and evening welcome reception hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Saturday, October 1st morning board meeting, afternoon Cirrus factory tour or Glensheen Mansion tour. Sunday, October 2nd, departures.

F LY I N G FDA Regional News Eastern District
Western District
As I write this newsletter l am sitting in the airport with Vickie, Alex, and Nancy Willis. We are your FDA ambassadors to Belize on a mission trip to the Holy Cross school. Alex is going to give me a crash course in pediatric dentistry during the flight! We are looking forward to seeing everyone in Snowmass. The skiing should be great.
During this time last year, I was in the air at least 2 times a week. What a difference a year and a ‘Godzilla’ El Nino make. While we certainly can use the water in this area, the flying weather has not been so great. (Yes, I can see some of my central states and east coast brothers rolling their eyes and feeling sorry for us) Here in the west, we have called a temporary truce with the drought, and currently winter sports abound. But looking at the calendar it won’t be too long until spring starts to make an appearance. That means for some of us adventure and CE at the same time in the British Virgin Islands and then of course, the upcoming National Meeting in Cody, Wyoming later this summer. It seems like National meetings are few and far between in a location where it is not a close race between Paul Zosel and me for who traveled the longest distance. With Cody being close to a west coast time zone, I hope we can have a good attendance from west coast FDA’ers. If you’ve never been to an FDA meeting, national or otherwise, you ought to try it once. The people, the flying and the CE is tough to beat. Feel free to call me with any questions. I look forward to catching up with everyone soon.
Don't forget our Nashville meeting in May and I now have the date for our fall fly-in to Dr Willis' hunting club. The dates are September 16,17, and 18. Put this on your calendar now. You will really enjoy this part of the country and the lodge. More details will follow. Safe flying, Steve

S NEW President Bart's column in the FDA Newsletter about his first FDA Fly-In brought back fond memories of our first FDA Fly-In. It was in June of 1976 that Amy and I loaded our Cessna 210 to the ceiling with suitcases and brown paper grocery sacks filled with clothes, toys, stuffed animals and snacks along with our two young kids and we took off for our first FDA National Meeting in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Amy and I had both received our private pilot license in 1974 and in March 1976 received our high performance check out in our 1961 Cessna 210. We were both VFR only pilots and Amy flew the first leg of the flight to Nashville as we started our first really long cross country flight. We still joke about recognizing people's faces in Nashville because the ceiling got so low on approach. After landing in Nashville and topping off the 210 with fuel, we hurried to get back into the plane in order to depart before an approaching thunderstorm. Try as I might, I could not get the darn hot, fuel injected Continental to start. It was like a sign from God that we should not leave the ground! Suddenly we were in a torrential down pour with lightning all around us. As we got out of the plane and waited for the FBO to bring out umbrellas, I realized just how much I like high-wing planes. After the thunderstorm passed, the sky cleared and we had a beautiful flight on to Hilton Head Island. It was my first experience flying over water which was a little unnerving and I remember my 5 year old son, Charlie, saying he was sure he could see sharks circling below us.
We had a Grand FDA Welcome at the Hilton Head airport and we thought, WOW, it just can't get any better than this--but it did! The Hotel was brand spanking new and our room had a balcony overlooking the ocean. Of course we had to have room service bring french toast for breakfast on the balcony the next morning. After our kids met other FDA kids, especially Rich and Linda Goldman's kids, they couldn't wait to go back to the FDA kids programs every day. Cal Calcote was Convention Chair and he put on a spectacular meeting. One evening he had arranged for an elegant buffet to be set up on the beach with a long row of fancy silver chaffing dishes. It was really First Class! The highlight of the meeting was the evening entertainment of shooting fireworks off of a boat. The real excitement happened when the Coast Guard thought the fireworks were distress flares from a boat in trouble and they showed up in a helicopter to "rescue" the Fireworks Crew! From having top notch speakers, to having great door prizes at the end of every lecture, to meeting fantastic people who became life-long friends--we were hooked on the FDA and did not want to ever miss another meeting! Thanks to Frankie and Cal Calcote, the FDA became a lifechanging experience for our family. We look forward to seeing everyone at the next FDA Fly-In with a return trip to Nashville and hopefully, better weather this time. Dave and Amy Camp West Burlington, Iowa
