Wauconda District 118 Parent – Teacher Advisory Committee There will be a meeting for anyone interested in serving on the District 118 Parent-Teacher Advisory Committee. The committee is seeking input concerning the student/parent handbook and bullying policy for each school in the district. Also, a review of the State Board of Education guidelines on the use of behavioral interventions for students eligible for special education will be included at the meeting. This is a collaborative effort of parents, teachers, and administrators. The meeting will take place on Thursday, March 8th, at 6:00 pm at the Wauconda Community Unit School District 118 Board Room. Dear AP Students/Parents: Taking the Advanced Placement exams is an important part of all AP courses. Wauconda High School encourages all students to take AP exams for the AP classes that they have taken. Scoring well on an AP exam can often earn students college credit for their high school class, saving a significant amount on tuition. For the 2018 AP exams, students at Wauconda High School will be registering online. This registration will take a few minutes and can be completed from any computer with internet access. This year each AP exam costs $98.00. Wauconda High School firmly believes that every student should be able to take AP exams. Students requiring financial assistance should contact Mrs. Laura Halverson, [email protected], in the WHS Main Office to learn more. Online Exam registration will begin on Thu., Feb. 1, 2018 at 12:01 AM and end on Wed., Feb. 28, 2018 at 11:59 PM. In order to register, students should click on the link provided on the school website or visit www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/144310 to register .To complete registration, students must answer all of the required questions. Registration is not complete until students have printed the pdf of the confirmation page that is provided at the end. We know that parents may desire to register their students for exams. We strongly recommend that parents and students are both present while registering to ensure that the correct exams are ordered. Wauconda High School is excited to offer families the convenience of paying exam fees ONLINE at the time of registration. Please be sure to have a credit card or debit card available before beginning registration. Paying online is a great way to make sure that payment has been made while avoiding mailing payment. Here are the important dates for the registration process: 

Bubbling will be pre-printed again this year. If this is not possible, pre-administration sessions will be held the third week of April during 8th period. Please take time to read the AP Bulletin for AP Students and Parents. It contains important information about exams, dates, times and rules. Pay close attention to what is and what is NOT allowed in the room on the day of the exam. WHS requires that all cell phones and electronic devices be left in your lockers or vehicles. They must turn in a permission slip with parent signature to arrive late or leave early.

Morning AP test students: Morning testing begins at 8 am. Please arrive no later than 7:30 am in the hall between Aux Gym 2 and the boys locker rooms. AP tests are typically completed by 11:30 am. If a permission slip is signed and turned in, then students may leave at the end of testing, using their own transportation to get home. Students must have a parking pass to park at WHS. If students choose to stay for classes, they will go to the cafeteria to eat immediately after testing and then they will attend 6 -8 period classes. th

2 tests SAME DAY: Students will eat lunch in the cafeteria between the 2 testing times. Afternoon AP test students: The test will begin at 12 pm. Students should plan on arriving no later than 11:45 am in the hall between Aux Gym 2 and the boys locker rooms. Students who choose to come to school at the regular time in the morning will go to 1 -4 period classes and then get released from class to eat lunch at 11:20 am (midway through 5 period Monday-Thursday/the last 10 minutes of 4 period on Friday). st

If students turned in a signed permission slip, they do NOT have to attend morning classes. They can arrive late to school at 11:40 am with their own transportation. Students must have a parking pass to park at WHS.

The afternoon test will run about 3 hours and 15 minutes ending around 3:30 pm. Students will need a ride home OR they can take the 5:30 late bus OR if they talk to me, Mrs. Halverson, ahead of time, I can add them to the 3:30 Tech bus that can drop them off near home. On assembly days: Students are required to attend Tech classes. For an exception: Parents must call the WHS Attendance line 847-526-6611 to give permission for the student to attend the assembly AND miss Tech class. Student must attend all WHS classes AND the assembly AND have a parent phone call, in order to have an excused absence (conflict day) with Tech. Please see conflict day procedures. Days with “No Tech Classes”: Students must attend all WHS assigned classes. AM Tech students may arrive late and start 4th period lunch or 5th period class. PM Tech students may leave after 5th period class or after 6th period lunch. Students who arrive early or stay at WHS and do NOT have any scheduled classes must sign in at study hall. Procedures for Reporting Absenses for Students Who Attend Tech Campus On a day when a student is unable to attend school or must leave school during the day, the parent/ guardian needs to call the WHS Attendance Office at (847) 526-6611 ext. 1008. The Lake County Technology Campus must also be called at (847) 223-6681. The building administrator will determine if an absence is excused or unexcused. If a parent/guardian fails to call or cannot call, the student should bring a note to the attendance office by 7:10 a.m. the morning of the student’s return. If a student does not report to the attendance office, or the school does not receive a parental explanation, the student will face disciplinary action.

If your child will be absent for two or more days, homework may be requested by contacting Maria Lichterman in the Assistant Principals for Student Services Office. In order to collect your child’s homework in a timely manner, we ask that you call in the request by 8:00 a.m. Any requests that are received after 12:00 noon will be processed for pickup the next school day.

IN CASE OF ABSENCE or a NEED TO LEAVE SCHOOL EARLY a parent or guardian must: 1. Call the high school at 847-526-6611 and press 1 2. Please report absences before 9:00 a.m. 3. PSAT/NMSQT Access to Scores and Practice SAT Students who have taken the PSAT can access their past and upcoming scores online. A powerpoint presentation is located on the Wauconda High School Guidance website. If you do not have an account, you will need to create one. Please go to studentscores.collegeboard.org. Once you create your account, you will be able to access those scores. To practice for the upcoming SAT tests, you will need to link our College Board account with Khan Academy. Follow the steps to link, and you should be ready to go.

Congrats Matthew Nolan Matthew has been awarded the Community Champion Scholarship from the Chicago Bears and the National Football Foundation Chicago Metro Chapter! Matthew was recognized for his work in the classroom, the community and on the field. Matthew will be awarded his scholarship and trophy at Halas Hall on Monday, February 19th from 3:30-6pm (Presidents Day). Matthew has maintained a 4.7 GPA, been a driving force at the Meals for All put on by FBLA, Bernie’s Book Drive, food collection for the Wauconda Food Pantry and played two sports! Matthew has helped make Wauconda a better place!

ATTENTION FRESHMEN!! As course registration for the 2018 - 2019 school year opens up for your class I encourage you to enroll in the driver education course offered here at WHS. This course is a graduation requirement as well as a fast, organized, effective way to earn both your learners permit and your drivers license. Our course here at WHS offers the state mandate of 30 hours of classroom instruction as well as the 6 hours of behind the wheel driving. In addition to those benefits our department offers the option for students to take the vision acuity test and permit test here at WHS. Upon passing the permit and vision test we as a department will obtain your permit for you at the DMV. Another benefit to our program is the ability for our instructors to offer students the driver license test here at WHS. Students must meet certain classroom and behind the wheel driving requirements in order to qualify for the drivers license test. Class times during the fall can be offered up to 5 times during the day and varies based on enrollment, class offerings and other factors. The behind the wheel drive times will be offered at multiple times after school, on weekends and during the school day. All of which is done to make sure your needs are met and all our students can be processed in a timely manner. If being enrolled in our program is something that you would like to participate in please ask your counselor about enrollment requirements when you sign up for classes for the 2018-2019 school year. Wauconda Community Celebrates the New Year at Meals for All By: Claire O’Brien On January 10, 2018, 68 members of the Wauconda community gathered to celebrate the New Year at Meals for All, as well as the company of their neighbors. In addition, 16 meals were delivered to those who were unable to join their fellow citizens for dinner. FBLA would like to thank the Moose Lodge for hosting as well as for providing the meal and dessert.

The evening was pleasant but quiet, with the Wauconda Moose Lodge offering a cozy respite from the winter cold. Community Service Chair Drew Nolan noted, “It was smaller in the Moose Lodge, and it seemed tight-knit at this Meals for All!

The Wauconda High School Special Olympics basketball team is going to state!! We won two games to get the gold medal and trophy and will compete at state in March at Illinois State University. We beat Hersey High School 46-37 in the first game and Hoffman Estates 45-41 in the second game. We are very proud of all of our players and helpers.

Wauconda Community Unit School District 118 Kindergarten Registration For School Year 2018/19 Children living within the school boundaries of Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown School, and Cotton Creek School should register at their home school on Monday, March 12, 2018, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Questions regarding attendance boundaries can be addressed by calling the Transportation Department at 847-526-6672. Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown School and Cotton Creek School will be conducting their Kindergarten Registration for all children who will be entering Kindergarten for the fall of 2018. Parents that have children who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2018, and who live within the boundaries of Wauconda CUSD 118, are eligible to register for the 2018-19 school year. This annual registration is done in March to begin the process of getting our youngsters ready for Kindergarten and to assist Wauconda CUSD 118 in staff planning. At the Kindergarten Registration, parents will be asked to complete the necessary paperwork to enroll their child. If you receive a call from the school and the person does not leave a message, please do not call the school. Emergency Early Dismissal Procedures Due to Severe Winter Weather Dear Parents: In the event of severe winter weather occurring during the school day, it may be necessary to dismiss the students housed at Wauconda Middle School, Matthews Middle School and Wauconda High School earlier than usual. The reason this action would be taken is to allow the buses an opportunity to drop off these older students in order to return in time to take the younger elementary students at Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown School and Cotton Creek School home according to their regular dismissal schedule. If this early dismissal was not done, we would run the risk of buses being unable to return the Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown and Cotton Creek students to their homes, or very late drop off for these same students. In addition, we hope to avoid buses driving in a snowstorm when it is dark. Parents of students in grades six through twelve need to be aware of the possibility that this situation could occur due to inclement winter weather. If it does, we would enact the Bright Arrow Emergency Alert Service in an attempt to notify you that your sixth through twelfth grade student was coming home early. As a result, we ask that you make appropriate arrangements with your sixth through twelfth grade student in order for them to gain access to shelter after being dismissed early due to weather conditions. This type of situation does not occur often, but if it does we wanted you to be informed of our actions so that you and your students can be prepared. Thank you for your cooperation. En la eventualidad de un clima severo de invierno durante el día escolar, puede ser necesario despedir a los estudiantes atendiendo en la escuelas Wauconda Middle School, Matthews Middle School y Wauconda High School más temprano de lo usual. La razón para que esta acción sea tomada es el permitir a los autobuses la oportunidad de llevar a estos estudiantes mayores a tiempo para volver y llevar a la casa a los estudiantes más jóvenes que están en las escuelas primarias Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown y Cotton Creek según su horario de despido regular. Si este despido temprano no se hiciera, estaríamos corriendo el riesgo de que los autobuses no puedan regresar a sus casas a los estudiantes de Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown y Cotton Creek, o que estos estudiantes lleguen sumamente tarde. Además, queremos evitar que haya autobuses manejando en una tormenta de nieve cuando ya ha oscurecido.
