CONTEXT Bellastock and ZK/U are partners within the Artecitya framework, an European cooperation project that aims to develop and promote art and culture as a lever of citizen engagement and empowerment in urban development projects.

Thus, we meet under the new precept of «Form follows action”, provoking the emergence of a thought rooted in the problems of the XXI century, where action-research will be the main way to respond to the challenges that are ours.

Through meeting and understanding the works of other European partners, the idea came to develop and increase the interactions between all the actors involved in new practices of urbanism at the European level: professionals, residents, and the next generation. Echoing the French network «Superville», catalysed in 2013 by the ETC Collective, the instigation of reflection and action times between European structures is a way to show new practices, to search for a common ground beyond national boundaries, and to build competence while raising awareness among the general public.

France, Germany and all European countries are now seeing the emergence of young structures that choose interdisciplinary collective work to dismantle the divide between design and production, and between ecological, economic and social concerns in the split disciplines of architecture and town planning. These practices will become recognised through strengthening our bonds and instigating common actions. Because we will be stronger together. «FORM FOLLOWS ACTION» One of the guiding principles of 20th century architecture was «Form follows function», a precept enacted by Louis Sullivan at the beginning of the century. Facing major changes in our current ecological, economic and social paradigms, we are betting that the city’s sustainable manufacturing process will emerge from the field, from the micro and not from the macro, reconfiguring the scale of production to our hands and networked brains: a tool to expand the nonstandard, and to specifically tailor our territories.

The development of the European network began with the implementation of various interactions between Paris and Berlin collectives, to prepare the Form Follows Aktion collaborative project at the end of July in Berlin; it also entails the festival #Ensemble (#Together) which will be built early July at the Cité de la Mode & Design in Paris (Centre for Fashion & Design). On the French side are involved: Collectif Parenthèse, Serge, Force Pure, and Bellastock. On the German side are involved: Refunc, ONOFF, and ZK/U In addition to the construction period in July where everyone will act together on the field (see below the details under “Project”), meetings, site visits and conferences are taking place in Paris and Berlin to show our work and to begin to structure this transnational network. You, too, can take part in the action and the reflections to forge links between cities, between countries, and especially between people to think and act together for our common future!

BELLASTOCK ASSOCIATION Created in 2006 within the architecture school of Belleville, Bellastock is firstly a research platform whose activity relies essentially on the organization of an annual festival, reuniting hundreds of architecture students. Throughout the years, Bellastock has diversified its activity by multiplying its partners with schools, enterprises, local authorities and with all actors concerned within city and territory planning projects. Today, it is an operational association for the establishment and the monitoring of innovative architectural projects. Bellastock’s activity is deliberately turned towards the establishment of original, ecological and economic alternatives to the act of building. For this, we lead a work of research-action: by proposing concrete methods applied to the problematic of the cycles of matter while placing the social aspect in the center of the project .

Composed of architects, engineers, landscapers, designers, sociologists, technicians, and many more artists … Bellastock team is considering experimentation as a vector of innovation and pedagogy. Those stakeholders from complementary disciplines gather their knowledge and know-how to support architectural project and territory transformation

ZENTRUM für KUNST und URBANISTIK The ZK/U sees itself as a laboratory for interand trans-disciplinary, activities centered on the phenomenon of “the city”. ZK/U promotes international exchange on global issues, in the light of what is happening in one’s own backyard. Working with local and international partners, ZK/U residencies brings together critical minds at the cutting-edge of artistic production and urban research. Contemporary artistic positions, ranging from contextual and interventionist to conceptual and street art, address selected themes. Work at ZK/U is informed by theoretical and practice-based critiques developed in the disciplines of geography, anthropology, urban planning, architecture and the humanities. On the site of the ZK/U, we have defined 4 project locations. The guiding objective is to reflect on the interactions between the building and the municipal park, and to propose new definitions for the internal / external relations that result from it. Guided by different workshops, you will create structures, or installations, which should be considered as a “parasite» –an experimental, temporarily new kind of usage. On each site, the work will be done by a team of 10 people (5 French and 5 Germans), with three main objectives: designing, building and running a project. We will propose ideas for using the spaces, but you are free to interpret the context and develop your creativity!

During the workshop, one key element will be to produce a handmade magazine using a mobile Risograph printer, courtesy of OnOff. The plans and results of the para-sites will be in the zine, but also crazy ideas, drawings, quotes and inspirations. This will constitute the beginning of a creative repository of ideas for the unique site of ZK/U. During the festival, we will also host a small DIY radio station, which will be broadcast online and on FM waves covering the surface of the park. The programmation will involve a combination of news sessions about the festival, discussion times, field recordings from the construction, and of course music (we will welcome contribution mixes to ensure that the music never stops –more info to come soon!). Small transistors will be used to spread the sound around the park!

The idea behind is also to be able to test many possibilities of parasites (para-sites) installed at the ZK/U. As you will discover, the configuration of the building and park has a number of qualities, and unexplored potentials, which we want to find new answers for.

The project is based on industrial, discarded and reused materials. Since the installations are ephemeral, the idea is to think about simple assembling techniques that do not modify the materials. Why? This festival is against the idea that after being used, materials become waste. Therefore, after we have built with them, the materials need to be reinjected in the infinite cycle of use and re-use. Depending on the project site, «goodies» can be provided to the teams. If necessary, digital tools can also be used: do not forget that the building lives day and night!

This points will also induce our possible registration selection. We hardly recommend you or your team to make proposals in that sense !
