CCSS - Math Standards:

STAGE 1 – DESIRED RESULTS Transfer Students will be able to independently use their learning to…

1.OA.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word Understand and perform basic computations necessary for everyday life problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting Meaning together, taking apart, and ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, Students will understand that… What is the best way to find the drawings, and equations with a answer to the problem? symbol for the unknown number to Quantities can be combined, separated, and represent the problem. compared using a variety of approaches. How do addition and subtraction relate to each other? 1.OA.3: Apply properties of Addition and subtraction have an inverse operations as strategies to add and relationship and it can be used to find the How do I know which operation to use subtract. Examples: If 8 + 3 = 11 is related fact. to solve a problem? known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.) 1.OA.5: Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).

Numbers can be added in any order and you will still have the same sum.

What questions can be answered using addition problems?

Proficiency with basic math facts aids in estimation and computation of larger and smaller numbers.

What questions can be answered using subtraction problems?

More efficient computation occurs when using combinations of 10. There is more than one way to solve a problem.

Acquisition Students will know…

Students will be able to…

Counting the total amount of two groups of objects is the sum.

Count two groups of objects to model addition.

When you move to the right on the number line, the numbers get bigger; you’re adding.

Separate objects from a group to model subtraction.

There are a variety of tools to use to assist with addition and subtraction problems.

Compare the total objects from two groups to find how many more or fewer.

Addition number sentences can be used to show parts of a whole. When counting on, it’s easier to begin with the larger number.

Use base ten cubes to add and subtract. Use a tens frame to add and subtract.

Separating a part of the total amount of objects is the difference. When you move to the left on the number line, the numbers get smaller; you’re subtracting.

Use a part-part-whole mat to add.

Subtraction number sentences can be used to show separating the parts from the whole or comparison subtraction situations.

Count on and back by 1, 2, or 3.

Counting forward is adding and counting backward is subtracting.

Use fact families to add and subtract.

When looking at two addition sentences, if the addends are the same, the answer will be the same. There are several strategies to use when solving word problems.

Evaluative Criteria

Use a number line to add and subtract.

Use a whole-part-part mat to subtract.

Relate addition to subtraction.

Write an addition or subtraction sentence to represent sums and differences. Solve addition and subtraction word problems using a variety of strategies.

STAGE 2 - EVIDENCE Assessment Evidence PERFORMACE TASK (S): Homework Teacher Observations Conferencing Daily Work Samples Summative Assessments Formative Assessments Math Station Recording Sheets

OTHER EVIDENCE: Math Journals Anecdotal Records Collaboration with Peers Self Reflections

STAGE 3 – LEARNING PLAN SUMMARY OF KEY LEARNING EVENTS AND INSTRUCTION Key Vocabulary adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, compare, unknown, sum, difference, equals, plus (+), minus (-), subtract, addition sentence, subtraction sentence, part-part-whole, whole-part-part, equation, fact family, word problem, count on, count back, total *NOTE: Subtraction names a missing part. Therefore, the minus sign should be read as “minus” or “subtract” but not as “take away”. Although “take away” has been a typical way to define subtraction, it is a narrow and incorrect definition.

Unit Sequence Addition Strategies Subtraction Strategies Relating Addition to Subtraction Solving Word Problems

Student Rubric Show students the “Addition, Subtraction, and Word Problems” rubric for Unit 2 on Day 1. This will help them understand all that they must be able to do by the end of the unit. On the last day of the unit, students can complete the rubric to evaluate their own learning.

Teacher Checklists Use the teacher checklists found at the end of this document throughout each part of this unit. Teacher makes observations while students are working on a designated task and gives checks for each area. This document will guide your instructions, intervention groups, and assist in filling out report cards.

Hook You may or may not have a hook each day. As you begin your lesson, find a way to engage your learners with a song, poem, dance, etc. BE CREATIVE!

Word Problem of the Day Begin each day with a Word Problem of the Day. Choose word problems that include addition and subtraction within 20 involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions.

Resource List Use the resource list at the end of this document to choose activities for the hook, mini lesson, and student engagement based on the topic of the day.

Student Practice As students practice skills each day, activities can be differentiated to meet students’ academic abilities and learning styles.
