June 2016 Teen Events @ the Suffern Free Library

STAC Meeting Monday, June 6th, 7:00-8:00 PM Suffern Room If you're in grades 7-12 and want a say in what programs the library holds for teens, come to our last STAC meeting of the school year. This month, we'll be focusing on how to get new STAC members, the 2016 Get in the Game teen summer reading program, events for the upcoming school year and more!

Registration for Teen Summer Reading Program Monday, June 13th, Starting at 1PM Teens going into grades 7-12 that live in the Ramapo Central School District will be able to register for Get in the Game, the 2016 teen summer reading program. Teens can come to the adult reference desk at the library to register and get their summer reading supplies. The first 100 teens to register will get a mesh sports bag and a pedometer that can get them extra stamps this summer as well. The grand prize this summer for the teen who gets the most stamps is once again a pair of 3-day passes to New York Comic Con this October, the ultimate pop culture convention!

Anime Club Meeting Monday, June 13th, 7:00-8:00 PM Story Time Room At our last meeting until September, we'll be watching the first episode of The Seven Deadly Sins. The Seven Deadly Sins were once an active group of knights in the region of Britannia, who disbanded after they supposedly plotted to overthrow the Liones Kingdom. Their supposed defeat came at the hands of the Holy

Knights, but rumors continued to persist that they were still alive. Ten years later, the Holy Knights staged a coup d'état and captured the king, becoming the new, tyrannical rulers of the kingdom. The third princess, Elizabeth, then starts out on a journey to find the Seven Deadly Sins and enlist their help in taking back the kingdom. To celebrate our last meeting of the school year, we’ll spend the second half of the meeting making Candy Sushi!

7th-9th Grade Book Club Meeting Monday, June 20th, 6:00-7:00 PM Teen Room Our book this month will be the graphic novel Drama by Raina Telgemeier, named one of the Washington Post’s Best Graphic Novels of 2012. Callie rides an emotional roller coaster while serving on the stage crew for a middle school production of Moon over Mississippi as various relationships start and end, and others never quite get going. Sign up at the adult reference desk to get your book. The first five teens to register get a free copy of the book to keep! Only register if you plan on coming to the meeting.

10th-12th Grade Book Club Meeting Monday, June 20th, 7:30-8:30 PM Teen Room Our book this month will be the novel Sabriel by Garth Nix, named as one of YALSA’s 100 Best Books. Sabriel, daughter of the necromancer Abhorsen, must journey into the mysterious and magical Old Kingdom to rescue her father from the Land of the Dead. Sign up at the adult reference desk to get your book. The first five teens to register get a free copy of the book to keep! Only register if you plan on coming to the meeting.

Get in the Game Opening Ceremonies Friday, June 24th, 6:30-9:00 PM It's the official start of our teen summer reading program and, to go along with the theme of games, we’re having a truck filled with video games in the library parking lot for teens going into grades 7-12 to play in. Plus, we'll have free food, and teens can register for the summer reading program and get their supply bags. Teens will receive a stamp in their summer reading logs for coming to this event! Remember: A guardian is required to walk the attending teen into the library to sign in and fill out appropriate permission slips. Make sure to register online so we know how much pizza, snacks, and drinks to get.

Teen Self-Defense Class Monday, June 27th, 7:00-8:00 PM Large Meeting Room If you're a teen going into grades 7-12, come to this class to learn some hands-on techniques in order to physically prepare yourself for unexpected situations and, at the same time, learn some common sense actions to avoid them. Master Raymond Portante, the class instructor, is a 6th degree black belt in Taekwondo and is the owner operator of East Coast Martial Arts in Chestnut Ridge, NY. Reminder: Teens will get a stamp in their summer reading logs for attending this free event. Please wear loose fitting clothing to class. Also, make sure to register for the class online!

Outdoor Soccer Wednesday, June 29th, 6:00-7:00 PM The theme for this year's summer reading program is sports and games so we'll be having casual drop-in events for teens going into grades 7-12 every Wednesday. On this Wednesday, we'll be having an informal game of soccer outside behind the library. Teens will get a stamp in their summer reading log for taking part in this event. Please note: Be sure to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Since this event is outside, it is also weather permitting. In case of inclement weather, the event will be cancelled. If the weather looks threatening, please call the library before coming. You can register for this event online.

Battle of the Books Informational Meeting Wednesday, June 29th, 7:30-8:30 PM Suffern Room If you’re going into grades 6-12 next year, you can join other pre-teens and teens from the Ramapo Central School District on our Battle of the Books team! What is Battle of the Books? It’s a fun competition that lets you win prizes by reading books and answering questions about them! How can you join? Contact teen librarian Jennifer C to sign up and I’ll give you books to read (which can also be used for your summer reading logs). We’ll read and discuss them at meetings over the summer, then go to the actual Battle of the Books in September to get goodie bags and vie for cash prizes. If you’re still not sure, come to our first meeting and see what we’re all about!
