The activities supported by the Infrastructure Systems Committee in TD&I. The objective is provide opportunities for students interested in infrastructure management, civil infrastructure systems, and asset management to gain indepth knowledge, develop project experience through a mini-project and network with other students with similar interests in Civil Infrastructure Management. The “Bootcamp” provides an opportunity for students and practitioners to have an immersion experience in an advanced Infrastructure Management course, focused on physical assets. The following topics will be covered: Performance and Level of Service Economics and Finance Data Management Risk Analysis and Reliability Deterioration Modeling Optimization Sensors and Instrumentation Research Methods The selected topics are taught as modules by instructors from universities in the United State and Canada. Readings are provided and exercises provide hands -on experiences. Each student is expected to develop a project over the course of the two-week Bootcamp. The project is intended to apply material learned in the modules. All participants must:
Hold a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field, Have completed a graduate-level course in Infrastructure Management, or Civil Infrastructure Systems, or Pavement Management, and Have had basic undergraduate courses in Engineering Economics and Statistics.
There is no charge for the bootcamp but participants are responsible for travel and accommodation costs. Previous bootcamps have been held at University of Delaware (2010 – see https://sites.google.com/site/aisim6/infrastructure-management-boot-camp), Georgia Tech (2012 – see https://sites.google.com/site/aisim8gt/bootcamp) and Virginia Tech (2014 – see https://sites.google.com/site/aisim10vt/home). Participants have come from as far away as Japan and Italy. The Annual Interuniversity Symposium on Infrastructure Management (AISIM) is now in its 12th year. This graduate student focused, graduate student organized event is intended to provide a welcoming environment for graduate students working in infrastructure management
to present their research, to help students build a network of peers, and to provide graduate students with some experience in organizing a conference. In years when bootcamp is held, AISIM is held in the middle of bootcamp. Student do not need to participate in bootcamp to participate in AISIM. AISIM11 was hosted by the University of Delaware in Alexandria Virginia to leverage the participation of students and faculty attending the International Conference on Managing Pavement Assets (ICMPA) (see https://sites.google.com/site/aisim11tech/home). The program begins with an afternoon workshop on a relevant topic followed by a networking event. The full day program the following day includes student presentations, a keynote presentations and a closing dinner. Award for best presentations are announced at the closing dinner. In 2015, eighteen presentations were made by students from thirteen different Universities. A call for abstracts for 2016 will be issued in early 2016.
