I really like the matchup – they’re a good team. Pella Christian has endured a full schedule against a conference full of larger schools, and now finds itself just a win away from its first state tournament appearance since 2010. The Eagles had a 10-point run in the opening set and a seven-point rally in the second set to cruise to a 25-15, 25-16, 25-13 victory over Pekin to get to back-to-back regional finals. The hitting was good, as expected – the Eagles hit .247 for the night, and Bekah Horstman and Morgan Fopma combined for 25 kills and a .390 hitting average – but with 10 aces the service game may have been even better. Despite Pekin’s best efforts their attack (.082) and their service game (0 aces) were never major factors in the match.

Grundy Center had already beaten BCLUW during the conference season in 2017, so the mission for the Spartans was to make it two in a row and put away the Comets to make it back to their eighth straight regional final. That mission was accomplished with a consistent, workmanlike performance in a 25-15, 25-12, 25-13 victory, and the final home match for a handful of Grundy Center seniors – Kylie Willis finished the night with a teambest 13 kills, and Landry Luhring and Hailey Wallis came up right behind with seven apiece. The longest BCLUW was able to sustain any momentum was a 5-3 start in the first set and a 2-1 start in the second set, but with just 12 kills in the match (half of which came from Easton Swanson), the momentum the Comets did get didn’t stick around for long.

SCOUTING REPORT: The first thing that jumps off the page about this Pella Christian group is its experience – 12 upperclassmen are on John Evenhouse’s roster for this season, and five of them were part of a team two years ago that finished at .500 and went out early against EddyvilleBlakesburg-Fremont. In fact, three of this year’s seniors were starters on that team. There is plenty of potential in the Eagle offense, but Bekah Horstman stands head-and-shoulders above the rest – Horstman has already committed to Northwestern College in Orange City for her volleyball career, and has been the team’s rock through the storms that inevitably come with a long season. Sophie Howerzyl anchors the back row for Pella Christian, her third year in a row. They’re led by John Evenhouse, who led them to their last state tourney appearance in 2010, and has won more than 500 career matches.

SCOUTING REPORT: Talent only goes so far…preparation only goes so far…game-planning only goes so far. In a match like this, a group that is mentally tough and has been on the big stage before will automatically have the advantage. That’s the spot that Grundy Center has landed in tonight with yet another visit to the regional finals. The Spartans will make blocking tough for Pella Christian tonight for the same reason that blocking was tough in the earlier rounds for BCLUW and Hudson – Grundy Center’s offense sends a lot of different players to the net and hits from a lot of different angles. Three of Landry Luhring’s kills on the outside last week were entirely uncontested, and they’ll force Pella Christian to make some quick on-the-fly adjustments when this one gets started tonight.

Landry Luhring has had an outstanding career but has just one more chance to get her team back to state tonight – look for her to make the most of it.

Grundy Center runs an unconventional offense, which means the Eagles block will need some time to learn and adjust. The key is being able to do it quickly and get settled in.

The versatility of Grundy Center’s offense is already a major strength – the Spartans simply need to keep the pace up, pass well and cruise with their feet off the gas.
