JOB DESCRIPTION – GIS TECHNICIAN Title:

GIS Technician

Randi Thomson, Project Manager

Summary of Position: The National Park Service (NPS) Wildland Fire Program has an existing field assessment protocol that has been used for the last few years to quantify risk to facilities. Using this protocol the position will work with NPS units to collect data on wildfire risk to facilities. This will include training park personnel in collection methods, supervising data collection, and performing facility risk assessments. While visiting park units additional spatial data will be collected for fire history and fuels treatment projects. Extensive field work and travel will be required. The ideal candidate will have both wildland firefighting and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) experience. This is a temporary, full-time non-exempt hourly position. Duty location is not set; preference will be given to applicants within the NPS Intermountain Region.

Duties & Responsibilities:  

     

Conduct wildland fire facility risk assessments for NPS units. Managing field data collection projects including: coordinating field and office crews, software training, data collection technology support and troubleshooting, and Quality Assurance/Quality Control of collected data. Obtaining, transforming, updating and loading data into the NPS Fire Geodatabase including fire history and fuels treatment information. Preparing weekly status reports detailing accomplishment towards tasks. Collecting spatial and non-spatial data related to NPS fire business areas and populating relational databases utilizing ESRI ArcGIS software. Documenting the process used to acquire and maintain data. Working independently, and be self-motivated. Periodic status checks will be completed to review the status of tasks and current workloads. Other duties as assigned consistent with a GIS technician supporting the NPS Wildland Fire program.

Required Skills & Abilities      

Experience in wildland firefighting. Experience in GIS discipline and practices. Highly motivated self-starter who can function without direct oversight. Spatial and tabular data management. Excellent communication, documentation, and writing skills. Familiarity with the NPS organization including FMPC, Regions, Park, and Fire Operations is a plus. September 2014 Page 1 of 1
