AN ORCHESTRA BEYOND BORDERS Cheah, Elena. An Orchestra Beyond Borders: Voices of the Western-Eastern Divan Orchestra. London: Verso, 2009. In 1999, Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said founded the Western-Eastern Divan Orchestra bringing people together from Israel, Palestine and other countries in the Middle East. Despite tremendous political and social obstacles, the orchestra has functioned as a transformative unit of harmony.

This extensive volume is organized into distinct sections; an introduction to instruments, famous composers and their musical styles with historical events associated with each. Musical examples of each instrument, composer and style are available on the accompanying CD.
