History Greenacres Middle School opened it doors for the 1959-1960 school year on land donated by a local graduate of Southern Methodist University with the condition that SMU’s colors (red and blue) and mascot, the mustangs, be the colors and mascot of the new school. The school originally housed grades 7, 8, and 9 under Principal Robert Hornerman and Assistant Principal Harold Ramsey. Greenacres students originally went to Bossier High School until Airline High School was opened in 1964. The 6th grade was added in 1990 with the addition of Apollo Elementary and Plantation Park Elementary students. GMS currently houses 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. GMS also receives students from five feeder schools: Apollo Elementary, Bossier Elementary, Legacy Elementary, Plantation Park Elementary, and W.T. Lewis Elementary. When the school first opened, there was a wood shop class (now computer lab) and a home economics sewing and cooking suite (at the north end of the campus which is now the art room and severe-profound rooms). All the way into the early 1990’s, there was a swimming pool north of the annex where students were able to learn to swim during PE classes because of the close proximity to the school. The pool fell into disrepair and was torn down in the mid-1990’s.

GMS originally had a six-period day. In the late 1990’s, the school changed to a seven-period day. For the 2006-2007 school year, an eight-period day was incorporated. Then in 2016, a modified five-period block was implemented. The school has experienced a consistent increase in school performance scores and offers a variety of high school credit courses such as Algebra I, IBCA, and Journey to Careers, with the addition of Speech for the 2017-2018 school year. AIM and Robotics/STEM courses are offered to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students as well. Athletics at GMS were originally male-only with football, basketball, and track. Football games were played on campus until the mid-1990’s when they were moved to Airline Stadium. The school now offers a variety of sports to both male and female athletes: boys/girls archery, boys/girls basketball, boys/girls cross county, boys football, boys/girls track, and girls softball. In addition to athletics, a wide variety of extracurricular activities are offered to students: Band, BETA club, Cheer, Dance, Destination Imagination, FCA, 4H, Math Counts, Pep Squad, Robotics/STEM, and Student Council.

DISMISSAL PROCEDURES

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES

 Walking students will walk down the bus ramp and then proceed to the supervised crosswalk.

 Students shall not arrive on campus before 7:00 a.m.  Walking students and bicycle riders must use the supervised crosswalk.

 Car riders are to be loaded in the same manner as they are during the morning drop off.

 Car riders must unload on the south side of the gym.

 Bus students will be dismissed to the bus loading area in front of the school.

 Students are to remain in the designated areas upon their arrival on campus.

 Checking out a student is discouraged past 2:00. This creates PM tardies for students.

 Student can receive AM tardies for not being to school by 7:24 in the morning.

Parents must present proper ID for checkout.

At t e n d a n c e In order to receive credit for courses necessary for promotion, all students must be in attendance for a minimum of 160 days. A student who misses more than 20 days in a school year is not allowed to be promoted to the next grade. It is the law of the state of Louisiana that personal illness (as verified by a doctor), death in the family, or extenuating circumstances (as agreed to by the principal) are the only basis for excusing an absence. A written note from the parent or guardian explaining the absence is required upon the student’s return to school. Students will be responsible for all class work assigned during absences. Also note that 4 unexcused tardies constitute an absence.

Ta r d i n e s s If a student arrives after 8:00 a.m., he or she must report to the front office to sign in. The student will be given a tardy slip stating the time of arrival. The student must present this slip to his or her homeroom teacher. Unexcused or habitual tardiness will result in disciplinary action. If a student is tardy for any class during the day, the tardy will be documented by the classroom teacher in the ILLUMINATE tardy tracker system. On the 4th tardy, a warning letter will be sent home to the parent. On the 5th tardy, the student will go to Detention. Subsequent tardies will result in Detention, GASP time, or possible Suspension. Tardies are recorded per nine week period.

Dress code Students are expected to follow the dress code policy. Any deviation from this policy will result in a dress code infraction. Dress code infractions are documented by the first period teacher. On the 4th infraction, a warning letter will be sent home to the parent. On the fifth infraction, the student will go to Detention. Additional infractions will result in Detention, GASP time, and possible Suspension. Dress code infractions are recorded per nine week period.

Pay m e n t o f F e e s Greenacres Middle School only accepts cash or money orders for the payment of fees or other activities, such as, payment for lost books, field trips, band fees, uniforms for cheerleader, dance-line, or pep squad, etc. Returned checks and associated fees have made it impractical to accept checks.

Pa t i o A r e a In the patio area students must stay inside the yellow lines painted on the walkways unless going to the concession stand. They are not allowed to stand in the breezeways before school starts or to wait for other students who have gone to the concession stand. While on break in the patio area, students should not run, chase others, or touch other students in any way. This is a time for students to visit with each other, not to practice dance steps, sing or chant. No toys of any type are allowed at GMS.

L e av i n g S c h o o l If it is necessary for a student to leave school, he or she must have written permission from a parent. Before a student leaves the school campus, he or she must be signed-out at the school front office. Once on campus, a student must remain. If the student leaves the campus, the administration will consider them skipping school and take appropriate action.

A f t e r - S c h o o l Ac t i v i t i e s GMS will provide supervision for 15 minutes after the closing time for all school sponsored events such as dances, athletic events and spirit groups. For example, if a dance ends at 6:00 p.m., supervision ends at 6:15 p.m.. Parents should provide rides for students by 7:15 pm for football games and 6:00 pm for boys and girls basketball games. Failure to pick up students within 15 minutes may result in being barred from attending future events. The administration will make this determination for repeat offenders.

B u s T r a n s p o r ta t i o n Bus transportation is provided for students residing more than one mile from school. Students who refuse to obey the bus driver or the faculty member on duty or who fail to follow bus rules and regulations may be suspended and/or lose transportation privileges.

Field trips GMS offers each student the opportunity to attend a class field trip at the end of the school year if certain behavioral and classroom expectations are met. Students will not be allowed to attend the field trip if they incur one of the following infractions: one out of school suspension, one bus suspension, or two or more GASP referrals. These trips are not PBIS sponsored and ,therefore, do not follow PBIS criteria to qualify. 7

GASP GASP is the Guided Alternative to Suspension Program. The purpose of the formation of GASP is to reduce the number of suspensions at Greenacres Middle School. As an alternative to suspension, a student who commits a violation of school rules is considered for a GASP penalty of one to five days, depending on the offense. GASP is a very structured environment and is held during school hours. No violation of the GASP Room rules will be tolerated. If a violation occurs and your child is removed from the GASP Room, he or she will automatically be suspended from school.

detention Students will be assigned lunch detention, after school detention, or PE detention for routinely breaking tardy policy, repeated uniform violations, or for committing more serious violations as an alternative to suspension. After school detention is from 2:30 PM until 3:20 PM. There is no school-provided transportation for detention. Parents are notified in advance of placement in detention.

S T U D E N T E X P E C TAT I O N S Students are expected to follow classroom rules which are displayed in every classroom. Teachers use various types of positive reinforcement for good behavior and consequences for unacceptable behavior. There is also a school-wide positive behavior support plan whereby students are rewarded for good behavior. If students do not comply with behavior policies, parents are contacted. The next time there is failure to comply, a conference will be scheduled in the office for the teacher and parents to meet along with other teachers the child has and the counselor and/or administrator. If the student continues to break classroom rules, he or she will be referred to an administrator for time in GASP. If behavior still does not improve, the student will spend more time in GASP and/or can be suspended for a period of time.

pbis Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is a program implemented by the Bossier Parish School Board to reward and encourage positive and appropriate behavior by students. The Greenacres PBIS program is centered around the three R’s: Ready, Respecful, and Responsible. Students are rewarded based on their adherence to these standards. Greenacres offers a variety of way to reward these behaviors.

M u s ta n g M o n e y Students are awarded “Mustang Money” by their teachers and other staff members for a variety of positive behaviors that students exhibit not just in the classroom but other areas of the campus. Students turn their money in every two weeks for a drawing. Several studnts from each grade level are drawn and receive a variety of rewards that include: concession stand vouchers, gift cards, or free dress days.

Zero Hero Zero Hero parties are conducted at the end of each nine week grading period. These parties are a reward for students that have shown consistent behavior over the course of a grading period. The reward for this party will vary. Past zero hero parties have included, free dress day, free jean day, free time on the patio, pizza, donuts, and ice cream. In order to qualify for a zero hero party, students must meet the following criteria for the nine week period: two or less unexcused absences, two or less dress code violations, two or less tardies, and no office referrals.

Super Hero Super Hero parties are off campus trips conducted at the end of each semester and are used as a reward for students who have shown consistent behavior over the course of two grading periods. Students who qualify for both zero hero parties during the first two grading periods qualify for the Super Hero party that occurs before Christmas Break. After Christmas break, students that qualify for both zero hero parties during the final two grading periods qualify for the Super Hero party that occurs before the end of the school year. The only exception to this would be if a student exceeds the number of absences, tardies, dress code violations, or receives an office referral in the time period between the zero hero and super hero parties. The Super Hero parties are currently held at Altitude Trampoline Park but can be subject to change. 10

Classroom and H a l l way E x p e c ta t i o n s Hallway rules are enforced for purposes of safety. Students are expected to walk to class during class changes on the right side of hallways at a moderate pace. They should keep moving and not stop to visit with groups of friends. Loud talking, yelling, and singing are not allowed in the hallways. Running is not allowed and pushing or other physical contact can lead to referrals to the office. Administrators and teachers are on duty during class changes. After several warnings about not following rules, teachers will refer students to administrators which can result in GASP time. Students are allowed time to go to the restroom and get water, but are not allowed in the restroom areas to congregate during class changes. After lunch, students have a break time to visit with friends. Teachers post classroom rules specific to the subject area they teach. Obvious rules include getting permission to talk, no gum chewing, respecting others, using the appropriate tone with talking, etc. Teachers also have procedures and routines in which students are trained for their particular classroom. Students are not allowed to leave classrooms without permission. They must sign out and in, and students must have a hall pass to be in the hallways during class time. Public displays of affection (PDA) are inappropriate and will not be tolerated. Use of electronic devices is prohibited unless approved by the principal. Violation of the electronic use policy can result in the device being confiscated by school officials.

Student ID Badges Greenacres Middle School has been using Student Identification (ID) Badges for several years. These ID badges serve four primary purposes: 1) Security and easy recognition while on campus, 2) Library check-out and check-in, 3) Cafeteria account information and identification, and 4) Check-in/out and tardy accounting. Students will be issued the first ID badge and lanyard at no cost. The badges must be worn at all times while at school. Failure to wear the ID badge will result in dress code infractions. Repeated failure will result in Detention or GASP. Replacement badges may be purchased for $5 each. Temporary ID badges may be purchased in the Library. Temporary badges need to be purchase before school for $1.00. Temporary badges purchased before school begins will not result in a dress code infraction. Failure to pay for a temporary badge will result in a dress code infraction. Repeated infractions will result in detention, GASP time, and possible suspension. Temporary badges are valid only for the date of issue. Students will not wear other student’s badges nor will they deform, alter or decorate the front or back of their ID badge. 11

Dress code Policy Greenacres Middle School follows a mandatory dress code policy. To meet dress code requirements, the students must present themselves in the approved uniform. Uniforms can be purchased from multiple local vendors. The school administrators will make all final decisions on dress code compliance. All uniforms must be worn in the manner meant by the manufacturer. This means that there will be no mutilation of any kind. Mutilation means tearing, ripping or cutting of hems, cuffs, sleeves or body of any of the coordinates. Cut off pants, shorts, or skirts are not allowed. All edges should be hemmed. The parents may make simple hemming of sleeve length, skirts, skorts, and/or length as long as it follows the dress code guidelines for uniform length. The uniform must be in the correct size to avoid any sagging. The student must be present in a neat fashion with no sagging or sloppiness. Pant legs will not be rolled up.

GMS dress code GIRLS Tops: White, red, navy or light blue polo shirts with no more than 3 buttons (no zipper, snap or tie closings) or white or light blue oxford shirts. White, blue, and red school uniform t-shirt and polo shirts. Shirttails must be long enough to tuck in. No fitted shirts w/ short cap sleeves or multiple buttons will be worn. Bottoms: Navy or khaki pants, Capri pants, shorts, skorts are the only approved bottoms for girls. No knit pants or no hip-huggers are permitted. No slits at the bottom. Pants and shorts must have belt loops. Belts are required. Pants and shorts may not have elastic at the ankle or waist. No corduroy or knit fabric allowed.

BOYS Tops: White, red, navy, or light blue polo shirts or white or light blue oxford shirts. White, blue, and red school uniform t-shirt. Bottoms: Navy or khaki pants or shorts. No knit or corduroy pants or shorts are allowed. No pants with slits at the bottom. Pants and shorts must have belt loops. Belts are required. Pants and shorts may not have elastic at the ankle or waist. No writing may be on pants/shorts or shirts.

Uniform Length Skirts, skorts, or jumpers should be the same length as the shorts. The Administration will use discretion as to whether shorts are an appropriate length. Pants must not drag on the floor in a manner that mutilates or destroys the pants by stepping or tripping on them. Pants may not be rolled up to calf length or rolled tight around the ankle. Shorts may not be rolled up. Pants may not be tucked into shoes or boots at any time. Spirit Days Spirit days will be allowed at Greenacres Middle School at the administrators’ discretion. Any spirit activity “designated spirit uniform” may be worn in place of the regular school uniform. Example: cheerleader uniforms, football jerseys, track jerseys or band T-shirt. It may be necessary to further define or amend this guideline as needed. Students are not allowed to wear air-brushed t-shirts or sweatshirts at any time. The designated school uniform t-shirts can be worn daily. All other club, organization, athletic, and school spirit shirts can only be worn on designated spirit days as approved by the sc the school administration. 12

Dress code Ac c e s s o r i e s Belts —The students may choose a coordinating style and color belt. However, the belt must fit into the belt loops of the pants or shorts and must be left buckled at all times. No part of the belt may be hanging at any time. No “tie” belts allowed. Shoes —All shoes must be closed toe. No beach, pool or house shoes, “flip flops”, sandals, or crocs. Velcro straps on shoes must be fastened and shoes that require laces must have laces in them. Shoes cannot be mismatched Socks —The student may choose a coordinating style, color, and variation of stockings/socks. Students cannot wear mismatched socks. Students will be asked to remove socks that are deemed inappropriate or distracting by the administration. Undershirts —A solid white, red, light blue, gray, or navy T-shirt, long sleeve T-shirt, or turtleneck worn under any uniform piece is acceptable at any time. No writing on an undershirt may show through a uniform shirt. Sweatshirts, hoodies, or jackets are not to be worn under uniform shirt. Outerwear —Only approved coats, jackets, hoodies, and sweaters will be allowed in the school. The larger jackets prove to be a storage problem and are very bulky which makes it extremely easy to hide items in them. Also, keeping such jackets on does not allow proper monitoring of the school uniform policy. Approved outerwear is as follows: 

Greenacres letter jackets for any activity are always allowed. They may be worn indoors but must remain unbuttoned or unsnapped while indoors.



Monogrammed sweatshirts are not allowed.



Only approved navy, red, gray, white, or black jackets, sweatshirts, and hooded sweatshirts may be worn inside the building. Any labeling on the outerwear must not be excessive in size as determined by the administration.. Proper uniform shirts must be worn under jackets and hoodies. Jackets and hoodies must be removed or unzipped upon request to ensure proper uniform compliance.



Neon colored outerwear, denim, camouflage, and vests of any type are not approved outerwear. Failure to remove these items and any other outerwear that does not meet the above requirements upon the start of the school day will result in a dress code infraction and a possible discipline referral to the office. These items may also be confiscated by the administration. GMS staff will not assume responsibility for non-uniform items that are confiscated. Every attempt will be made to store nonuniform items securely, but GMS will not assume responsibility for non-uniform items that are picked up by a student other than the owner. Students are encouraged to purchase outerwear items that comply with the dress code policy in order to avoid this problem.



No Airline Viking t-shirts, sweatshirts, or jackets. Only the approved AHS Foundation shirt is allowed to be worn on designated spirit days.



No striped, plaid, or print shirts or outerwear. This includes camouflage clothing of any kind.

Dress code Guidelines Guidelines for uniforms include but are not limited to the following items. 

Sagging is prohibited at all times.



Students are required to wear an appropriately sized belt, and shirts must be tucked in at all times.



No body piercing (nose, tongue, eyebrow, etc.).



No large jewelry, chains, beads, etc., for boys or girls. No grills, or other types of metal mouthpieces will be worn.



Females may wear earrings. Only bottom earlobe piercings are allowed for female students. All other body piercings are prohibited.



Bows, scarves, or headbands that are oversized or distracting as deemed by the administration are not allowed.



Males are prohibited from wearing earrings and any other type of body piercing.



Any visible tattoo that is deemed inappropriate by the administration must be covered by clothing or bandage.



Any style of personal grooming representative of gang membership or that attracts undue attention will be prohibited.



Controversial slogans or writings on items of clothing, notebooks and backpacks are prohibited. Students are not allowed to sign t-shirts that are worn at school.



Inappropriately cut or torn clothing is not allowed.



Items of apparel or jewelry which distract from the instructional program, or those which present a safety hazard are not allowed. No chains (large chains, dog chains, billfold chains) or no large belt buckles will be allowed.



No stocking caps, hats, bandanas, sweatbands or “do rags” are to be worn or brought to school.



No tinted hair or spray coloring of unnatural color which draws attention will be allowed.



Facial hair (mustaches, beards, goatees, and long sideburns) is not allowed.



No spiked hair which is extreme in length or style so that it draws attention away from the learning environment. No Mohawk haircuts are allowed. No bangs hanging down covering eyes. No distracting designs are to be shaved into haircuts.



No make-up, body art, etc. that draws undue attention as determined by the administration

Dress Code Violations Anything worn or any hair style or color that causes disruption in the school setting or draws focus from academics will not be allowed. Such decisions will be made by the administration. The uniform supply closet will be utilized by the school to assist students in complying with the dress code policy. However, if the appropriate attire is not available or the student is a habitual offender, the parent will be notified and asked to bring the proper attire. Students may also be placed in GASP until the proper attire is acquired. 14

Cell phone policy WIRELESS RECEIPT AND RETURN AGREEMENT Important notice: This form shall be signed by the parent to whom a cell phone, pager, or other electronic device is returned upon first offense. Thus, the parent will have a full understanding and is in agreement with the BPSB policy.

1st Offense: Par ents ar e r equir ed to come to the school to r etr ieve the device. Par ents can pick up the phone in the school office by 3 p.m. on the day the phone was confiscated. 2nd Offense: $15.00 FINE: The phone is kept until the fine is paid (cash or money or der only) and the parents retrieve the phone from the School Administration. 3rd Offense: $25.00 FINE: The phone is kept until the fine is paid (cash or money or der only) and the parents retrieve the phone from the School Administration. 4th Offense: The phone will remain in possession of the school until the end of the term. I understand that my child has been in possession of a cellular phone or electronic device and is in Violation of the Student handbook and the Bossier Parish School Board Policy. Counselor The school counselors, Mrs. Elbert and Mrs. Scott, are available to talk with students and parents about concerns they may have. The school advises students on matters that impact their lives both at school and in the community. Parents should call the counselor when they would like to schedule a teacher – parent conference. The conferences are usually scheduled from 7:05 – 7:20 a.m., 2:30 – 3:00 p.m. or during the teacher’s planning period. Parents may also call the counselor when they would like to get information about their child’s performance in school.

School Resource Officer Our School Resource Officer (SRO), Deputy Skip Orgeron, is a trained, seasoned law enforcement officer who is assigned to GMS by the Bossier Sheriff’s Department and the Bossier Parish School Board.

Classes promoting personal goal setting and self-esteem will be taught as requested. Counseling will be extended to troubled youth and programs will be presented to students and parents in gang activity prevention, drug abuse prevention strategies, and other areas of importance and concern which affect the youth of today. The SRO also provides an extra measure of support for those “high risk” students who may have a tendency to become involved in gang activity, drug abuse, or other negative, illegal activities. The School Resource Officer’s responsibilities are: 1.

To provide more efficient police resource assistance to school personnel, parents and students.

2.

To foster a more positive concept among young people concerning the role of law enforcement in society.

3.

To combat juvenile crime before it happens; to prevent juvenile delinquency.

4.

To assist in the reduction of student dropouts, suspensions, expulsions, and gang activity.

5.

To make arrests when appropriate.

Physical Education The physical education program is dedicated to improving the health, fitness, and skill level of our students. Instruction is also provided in personal health, safety drug education, and sex education. Policies and Procedures of the Physical Education Department 7th and 8th Graders

Students must dress out everyday in a Greenacres Middle School PE uniform. PE uniforms can only be purchased through the PE department during the first week of school. 7th Grade Boys and Girls will wear an Ash Gray Shirt with a Navy Screen and Navy Mesh Shorts with a White Screen. All 7th Graders will be required to buy a NEW uniform. 8th Grade Boys and Girls will wear the same color they wore the year before. They will wear a Red Shirt with a Navy Screen and Navy Mesh Shorts with a White Screen. 8th Graders may continue to wear their PE uniform from the previous year. PE uniforms will cost $25 for the set. Cash, Check, or Money Orders are accepted. Checks and Money Orders may be written to GMS Athletics. Students are NOT required to provide a combination lock for their lockers in the locker rooms in the gym. As part of the PE Fee of $5 that is required for all students, this fee includes a locker and lock that is assigned to each student. The PE Fee is mandatory and must be paid within the first week of school. Total PE FEE plus PE Uniform - $30 for each student Students are not to share their combination or locker with another student. NO PERSONAL LOCKS MAY BE USED. We recommend that students have at least two uniforms, so they will have a clean one each day. The student’s first and last name must be written on the top and bottom of the uniform in PERMANENT ink. A Composition Notebook will be required for ALL students. We will do Health and Physical Educated journaling EVERYDAY.

Tennis shoes (non-marking soles) and socks are required EVERYDAY. Students will be allowed to store in their personal locker outside shoes such as cleats or other outdoor shoes for the field. Students must be in the gym before the tardy bell rings. Students will be required to be in their assigned area of the gym and in their assigned spots on the floor or a tardy will be assigned to the student. Habitual tardy offenders will be referred to the office Administration. Students are NOT allowed on the stage, in the foyer, in the concession area, or in the coaches’ offices without permission. Students may NOT leave class, or the area of instruction, without a pass from the coach, or doing so is considered cutting class or skipping, which is just cause for an office referral. 17

Jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets, anklets, rings, dangling or hoop earrings, belts, chains, or wristbands are not to be worn during PE class. These items should be left at home. Gum, candy, soft drinks, toothpicks and comb/hair picks are specifically prohibited in class. CELL PHONE ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE GYM AREA UNLESS INSTRUCTED BY THE COACHES. Cell phones MUST be locked in their gym locker in the locker room at all times. The Coaches are not responsible for lost cell phones. Students should never have large sums of money in PE (or at school). Coaches WILL NOT hold valuable objects. This is what the personal locker in the locker room is for. Students will lock their backpacks/personal belongings in the locker and lock provided by the PE Fee everyday. No personal items will be allowed back in the gym from the start of class till the end of class. Anytime a student needs to be excused from participating due to illness or injury, the student must have a note from home written, dated, and signed by the parent or guardian along with a phone number. Notes from home excuse the child for ONE class only. If the illness or injury lasts longer than one day, a doctor’s note is required stating the specific number of days the student needs to be excused. Notes written by parents may be verified by telephone. A note from a parent is NOT an excuse from dressing out. Properly dressing out and participating in class will be monitored in order to determine the student’s PE grade. Aerosol spray deodorant such as AXE Body Spray or hair spray are not allowed. Only solid, gel, or roll-on deodorant or pump hair spray will be allowed in PE or at school. Consequences for not dressing out will result in a verbal warning and a phone call or warning letter sent home to the parent on the first few infractions. Continued noncompliance will result in detention, in-school suspension, and/or out of school suspension. The physical education department will gladly work with any parent if special circumstances exist. Band The GMS award-winning band program continues to develop and improve, offering its members access to fine arts study through music. Band members are highly respected students at Greenacres with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 even though no minimum grade point is required for membership. Band members consistently earn medals and trophies at district music competitions, as well as positions in the district and state honor bands. There are two performing bands at Greenacres, the Beginning Band and the Concert Band. Beginning Band Enrollment for this group is open to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. This organization lays the foundation for the entire band program. Because fundamental training is critical, the performances of the Beginning Band are limited. Beginning Band meets every day during school. After-school rehearsals are held three weeks prior to each public performance. Holiday and spring concerts, a tour of elementary schools, participation in solo and ensemble performances, and a band breakfast are part of this band’s schedule. Students do not need any previous musical training to join Beginning Band. All elements of music are introduced during the first year. Students are tested extensively for instruments at the start of the school year. Concert Band Members of this organization are musically active and advanced. Members have displayed an exceptionally high degree of proficiency as mandated by the director. Concert Band meets every day during school and sometimes after school throughout the year. In addition to holiday and spring concerts, the members participate in pep rallies, perform at home football games, compete in district honor band and district band festival. Members also participate in the solo and ensemble festival, tour of elementary schools, band breakfast and other community service performances in and around Bossier City. Concert Band members were featured on local channel 12 with “Tony Live” in May of 2000.

Student Council

The Student Council is a service organization which represents the entire student body. It acts as a communication link between students and the faculty and administration. Representatives are selected from each homeroom at the beginning of the school year. These representatives are responsible for keeping their homerooms abreast of the current happenings in the school. Being on the Student Council provides leadership opportunities for students at Greenacres Middle School

Y e a r b o o k S ta f f The Roundup is planned, assembled and sold by the yearbook staff. Yearbook staff is a co-curricular activity. It provides an opportunity for students to enhance writing skills and gain knowledge and experience in layout, sales and advertising. During the 4th nine weeks of school, yearbook staff turns into a debate class.

Libr ary The automated school library contains approximately 11,000 books to be used for reference, information and pleasure. Excluding reference books, students are allowed to check out two books for a two-week period. Fines of 10¢ per school day are charged for overdue library books. Book fine notices are distributed weekly to those students who have an overdue book. If a student loses or damages a library book, the list price of the book is assessed. A fine of $5.00 is charged if a book’s barcode has been removed or destroyed. Book checkout privileges will be denied until delinquent books are returned and/or all fees are paid. Students are taught sequential library lessons during the school year. Library skills taught follow the benchmarks set forth by the Louisiana State Department of Education. Library skills include using computerized tools, reference materials, and periodicals in a hands-on approach in the classroom and in the library. The Accelerated Reader Program is a school-wide computerized reading system. All students check out books on their appropriate reading level and are tested on the material in language arts classes. The results of these computerized tests track student progress in order to provide teachers more insight into individual students’ reading strengths and weaknesses. Through the continued progress provided by this system, students can work at their own performance rate which promotes our goal of a lifelong love of reading.

Pep Squad The GMS Pep Squad is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls. The purpose of the Pep Squad is to promote school spirit, especially at extra curricular events. Girls must maintain a 1.5 grade point average. The Pep Squad has discipline guidelines that are enforced by a demerit system. Members have attendance requirements that must be met in order to remain in the squad. A student can be dismissed due to disciplinary reasons. Membership in the pep squad is fun and is a great way to support our school.

M u s ta n g P r a n c e r s The Prancers are the dance line here at GMS. They perform at all home football games, selected girls and boys basketball games, pep rallies, spirit days and other events. Listed below are the requirements to become a Prancer:

    

Be on Pep Squad, or band, or cheerleader for one full year Attend a clinic at the end of the year and then try out Maintain a 2.25 grade point average with no “F” Attend all clinics and practices throughout the year A student can be dismissed due to disciplinary reasons

Dance line is hard work, but it really pays off and it is a fun experience.

M u s ta n g C h e e r l e a d e r s The following criteria has been established to serve as a Greenacres Mustang Cheerleader:



Have to be a part of Pep Squad, or Dance line, or band during 6th or 7th grade year



Must be a 6th or 7th grade girl who meets eligibility requirements and must try out



Have and maintain a 2.25 grade point average every 9 weeks— no more than one “F” during any grading period



Commit to remain in cheerleading squad during the entire year unless dismissed for disciplinary actions



Meet administrative recommendations



Have recommendation from sponsor of Dance line or Pep Squad



A student can be dismissed due to disciplinary reasons

Exceptions for any student who moved to our school during the year will be based on experiences at former schools in addition to performance since entering Greenacres.

F. C . A . F.C.A. stands for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The purpose of F.C.A. is to present athletes, coaches, and those influenced, the challenge and adventure of Christianity. F.C.A. has a “See You at the Pole” meeting every Friday to pray. There are F.C.A. breakfasts once a month and some night meetings. During the summer there is an F.C.A. camp. At the end of 6th grade members are eligible to try out to become an officer. Membership is open to all students. Membership to FCA is not restricted to athletes.

Robotics Robotics is a fun class that offers students a chance to build robots and experience engineering at a young age. The robotics students take a class during the regular school year while also competing in weekend competitions throughout the school year.

Pride of Greenacres Pride of Greenacres is a group of high-achieving eighth grade students who have maintained a 3.5 grade point average for each grading period of their 6th and 7th grade years and the first grading period of their 8th grade year. They have had no letter grade of “D” or “F” during these grading periods. These students have demonstrated leadership qualities through holding offices in extracurricular organizations, by serving as committee chairs of extracurricular or community organizations and/or being chosen team leaders of community, athletic, school, or co-curricular organizations. Students chosen for Pride of Greenacres membership have demonstrated good citizenship qualities through participation in organizations that serve the community. To be considered for Pride of Greenacres, students should have also received recognition or awards through such groups. Pride of Greenacres students should have received no discipline referrals resulting in suspension while at Greenacres. In order to be selected for Pride of Greenacres, students must obtain and complete an application form and return it by the deadline set by school personnel, usually before Christmas break. Morning announcements are made daily for a two-week period prior to turning in the applications notifying students about the application process. The applications should be neatly completed. Students must get a written recommendation from a teacher who has taught them while at GMS. The teacher must be a current member of GMS faculty. A recommendation form is attached to the application. Request for the recommendation must be made in writing by the student a minimum of three (3) days prior to the deadline for submitting the application. Proof of academic excellence is required by attaching copies of student report cards to the application. Copies may be requested from the school counselor at least three days prior to application deadline.

A committee made up of Greenacres administrators and teachers examine the applications to ensure that all criteria are met by the submitting student. Students meeting the application and recommendation time requirements listed above and showing involvement in the four areas discussed in the first paragraph are notified and given a date and place for pictures to be made for the school yearbook. The pictures will appear in a special part of the Mustang Roundup which is published annually.

Student of the Year Student of the Year applicants are determined through first submitting an application and teacher recommendation for Pride of Greenacres selection. Student of the Year candidates are required to write an autobiographical essay and present a typed copy in by the established deadline. A selection committee made up of GMS administrators and teachers will read the essays, examine the Pride of Greenacres applications, and choose the top four (4) students to go through the interview process. Competition for Student of the Year is based on guidelines established by the state committee. For regional and state competition, a composite tally sheet is used which is comprised of the following:

*While academics are not the most heavily weighted criterion used in determining the student of the year selection, they are very important. Students considered for selections should have maintained a 4.0 grade point average for their 6th and 7th grade years and the first semester of 8th grade. After the GMS Student of the Year is selected, that student represents GMS in the parish competition. Parish representatives then compete in regional and state contests based on the above criteria.

TEXTBOOKS Each class has a classroom set for use in the classroom only. These books are to stay at the school and never leave the classroom. Parents will be held responsible for the cost of any book which is lost or damaged in accordance with the costs listed below. GMS encourages student to study and keep materials on location. Textbooks will be sent home with students on an as needed basis.

Cafeteria The school cafeteria serves breakfast and lunch each day. It provides a well balanced meal, encouraging good nutrition. Each student must purchase a lunch each day unless the student chooses to bring a lunch. Students are allowed to charge only two meals. Any meal over the two charge limit must be paid for at the time it is served. At lunch time, students will walk to the cafeteria with their teacher. Teachers will seat students in the cafeteria with no seats being skipped (no saved seats). Administrators and/or school staff will dismiss students by row to go to the serving lines. Students should have money and ID badges ready when going to the serving line and should stay in a single file line. They should then sit quietly as they eat. They should place trash in the trash cans. Throwing, sliding or tossing anything—especially food— in the cafeteria will result in loss of cafeteria privileges and/or time in GASP.
