Welcome to Summer at Guthrie! We are thrilled you have chosen to learn more about The Guthrie School’s Summer Program. Rest assured, our unique and popular morning academic program that gives students a huge jump-start on the coming school year is back this year better than ever! This teacher-guided program is complete with language arts instruction, writing, speaking, and math. These students will be under the tutelage of The Guthrie School’s amazing faculty. In addition, you will find a wide variety of weekly program offerings ranging from cooking and chess to Lego EV3 ™ and Minecraft ™. Our programs are sure to keep your child interested and engaged in exploration and growth this summer. At The Guthrie School, we focus on developing the whole child with loving care and positive guidance. We want each one to achieve a boost in confidence while he or she experiences the best summer ever. When developing our programs, we have worked hard to keep in mind the current interests of our students and schedules of our parents. Scholars, artists, Minecraft ™ lovers, budding scientists, writers, animal lovers, botanists, typists and more will have a blast with us at Guthrie this summer. Just The F.A.Q’s Got Questions? We’ve got answers! Here’s what you need to know about Summer at Guthrie!

Q: How do I enroll? A: Enrollment includes the Signed Enrollment Form, Policy Form, Media Release, the Immunization Record, and the $60 Enrollment Fee. You can enroll by mail, email, or in person. • Email: Email ALL completed and signed forms to [email protected] and mail payment to The Guthrie School, 598 Old Custer Road, Allen, TX 75013. • In Person: Bring your completed and signed forms and payment to our office at 598 Old Custer Road, Allen, TX 75013. All programs are limited in size, and are available on a first come, first served basis. The full cost of the program must be received to secure your child’s place. Programs are subject to cancellation due to insufficient enrollment. If we cancel a program, we will either transfer payment to another program, or issue a full refund for that program. Q: Is there a deadline to enroll? A: All enrollment paperwork and the enrollment fee must be received by Thursday at noon in order to be processed for programs starting the following Monday. If enrollment occurs after Thursday at noon, a $10 rush fee will be added for the program. Q: What forms of payment do you accept? A: We accept cash, check and debit/credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, and Discover only). We offer flexible payment options so your card can be charged at the beginning of each month for that month’s programs. Credit card payments are subject to a 3% processing fee.

Q: What are Volume Discounts? A: BEFORE May 1, 2017 - 10% off $2,000+ tuition if paying up front AFTER May 1, 2017 - 5% off $2,000+ tuition if paying up front The volume discount applies to tuition only, and does not apply to registration, lunch, or snack costs. The discount will be applied at the time of full payment of the specified amount. The volume discount is per student (not per family). Q: Do you offer sibling discounts? A: No. We limit our class sizes to maximize the amount of attention we can give to each student. Each seat in the class is equally important. Q: How do I add or change classes after I’ve enrolled? A: Additional programs may be added by mail, by email to [email protected], by calling 972-596-6929, or in person. Students are allowed one schedule change at no charge. A $15 charge will be applied for each additional schedule change.

Q: When registering for programs, what grade do I choose? A: Grades listed are the grade the student will enter in the fall. Students must be at least three years old by September 1, 2017 in order to enroll. All students must be toilet trained without assistance from an adult to enroll. Q: How do you handle refunds? A: Refunds are issued only upon cancellation of the program by The Guthrie School, or in the case of an extreme emergency such as an illness or injury of the student enrolled. A physician’s letter must document the illness or injury. If a non-emergency conflict arises, we will transfer payment to another summer program only. No payments are transferrable to Fall 2017 or later programs. Q: Where do I drop off and pick up? A: Parents should drop off and pick up their students at designated carpool times as outlined by your confirmation letter. Confirmation letters will be sent one week prior to the start of the program. Students will be escorted to the front lobby, and will be released to individuals showing a carpool pick up sign in the front window of their vehicle, or authorized individuals. To be an authorized individual to pick up, the school must have prior receipt of written authorization from a parent, and the individual must show a photo ID. For the safety of your children, we will verify individuals who do not show a carpool sign at pick up. Students attending the all day program or any student who is at the school after the 3:30 pm carpool ends, must be signed out each day at the reception desk by a parent or an authorized individual. Q: How do I get a carpool sign for my vehicle? A: Carpool signs will be distributed on the first day of camp.

Q: How does lunch work? A: For the preschool (3s) and pre-k (4s) classes, a designated lunchtime will be built into their day. For students going from a morning to an afternoon program, lunch will be from 12:00-12:30 PM. Lunches will be provided by Wholesome Food Services, an outside, healthy-fresh food service company. To learn more about Wholesome Food Services and to register for your child, go to: https://www.wholesomefoodservices.com. Lunches may be brought from home; however, lunches from home will not have access to either refrigeration or heating. Q: What should my child bring with him or her? A: The following items are suggested: • Bag: Please bring a backpack or bag with handles. “Summer at Guthrie” bags may be purchased for $15 at the front desk, if desired. • Snacks: Students will have the opportunity to have a snack at 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM each day. Please pack snacks, if desired. Preschool (3s) and Pre-K (4s) will be served a school-provided snack by their teachers at these times. • Attire: We suggest that your child wear closed-toed shoes and dress in comfortable summer attire. Preschool (3s) and Pre-K (4s) should have a change of clothing including underwear and a second pair of shoes and socks in their bags at all times. Teachers will contact you if your program requires special attire at any point during the summer. Q: Do you offer extended care? A: Yes, we offer our EXTEND program for families who need all-day care. Early care is available from 7:30 am until the morning program begins at 8:30 am. Afternoon care is available until 6:00 pm. Please see the class schedules for the cost of attending. Q: What happens if it rains? A: All programs are held indoors in the case of rain.

Q: Will classes be held on July 4, 2017? A: No, The Guthrie School is closed the week of July 4, 2017. (July 3-7) Q: How do you handle allergies or other health concerns? A: Please clearly indicate if your child has any allergies or dietary sensitivities on your enrollment document. In addition, please contact us at [email protected] or call 972-596-6929. Q: How do you handle discipline? A: The Guthrie School reserves the right to dismiss from its programs any student whose conduct is unsatisfactory or who fails to conform to the rules and regulations. No refund or transfer of tuition to another program will be made upon a student’s withdrawal or dismissal from any summer program due to discipline. Q: Does my child have to be a Guthrie School student to attend the Summer Program? A: The Guthrie School Summer Program welcomes students from any school, race, color, religion, and national or ethnic origin.

Early Childhood Program Preschool (3s) And Pre-Kindergarten (4s) Programs Friends, Fun, Hugs, and Learning! The Summer at Guthrie Early Childhood Program gently guides our youngest students, and places them on the path to success socially, emotionally, and academically. We care about the whole child, and thoughtfully prepare a loving and rich environment for them to learn to love school, develop new friends, and achieve developmental milestones.

Weeks: 1 through 10 • 8:30 am - 11:30 am: Includes Morning Academic Class, snack and recess. • 8:30 am - 4:00 pm: This program includes Morning Academic Class plus lunchtime [may be purchased or brought from home], rest/nap time, and organized afternoon activites based on weekly themes • 8:30 am - 6:00 pm: All day program includes everything above plus fun afternoon guided play. Lunch can be purchased through Wholesome Food Services. See page 38 for more information.

Sneak Peek at our 3s Program: Three years old is a time to thrive! At The Guthrie School, we promote growth and development with loving guidance and expert attention. We transition activites frequently to ensure active engagement and encourage participation in a variety of new activites. Each week, we will introduce a special theme such as “The Ocean,” “Our Flag,” or “Zoo Animals” to incorporate academic learning, art, music and STEM activites. Our morning snack, morning recess/playtime, lunch, rest/nap time, and afternoon recess rounds out our well-balanced day.

Sneak Peek at our 4s Program: Our fabulous fours build upon the basics established in our three-year-old curriculum and grow by leaps and bounds. We keep the fun and interest of our young learners sharp by having them transition about every 20 minutes to new activites as they dive deeper into learning how to be a successful student and friend. Each week will introduce a special theme such as “Animal Homes,” “All About Insects,” or “Growing a Garden,” to incorporate academic learning, art, music and science activites. Early Childhood Schedule Get Ready for School! Pre-School (3s): From 8:30-11:30 our students will be exposed to a variety of concepts with an emphasis on phonics, math, and fine and gross motor tasks. They will learn to recognize and trace letters and numbers, use manipulatives to develop strong math skills, build memory, and spark their creativity.

Pre-Kindergarten (4s): We are dedicated to providing a balanced curriclum to meet the needs of the whole child. From 8:3011:30 our curriculum focuses on phonics, math, reading, manuscript and writing, critical thinking skills, presentation, leadership, and organization. The classes are teacher-led by our own awesome teachers, who are pros at bringing out the best in each student. In the Lower Elementary Morning Academic “Mini-School Day” program, students will experience all the benefits of a teacher-led class that includes math and problem solving, critical reading skills (comprehension, figurative lanaguage, main idea and details, character traits, inferences and making judgements, author’s purpose and perspective and genre and organization), vocabulary development writing and composition, and speech and presentation. Each week is selfcontained so that it is possible to take a vacation and return for additional weeks later in the summer with ease. Each week is self-contained so that it is possible to take a vacation and return for additional weeks later in the summer with ease. Camp Descriptions 1. 3-D ART! Get your hands dirty! Come explore and have fun while creating pieces of art using a variety of mediums including clay. Campers create handbuilt sculptures and functional pieces. They will work on teacher guided projects and have free time to work with the different materials. 2. BOOK CLUB Crack open a good book with us! In this camp, students will learn to read, understand, and make connections to appropriate genres and novels. Pulling from classics and new releases, we seek to inpsire conversation and interest in reading through hands on learning and creative projects. Support your student’s literacy skills by joining Guthrie Book Club!

3. BRICKS FOR KIDS Come and LEGO™ with Minecraft™! Minecraft is a popular design and strategy game in which players place blocks to build anything they can imagine. We will experience the world of Minecraft in a hands-on way using LEGO bricks! Students will craft their own LEGO Minecraft shelter and be challenged to bring their virtual world to life.

5. CHINESE (offered all 10 weeks) If you are unsure of level, our Chinese teacher will be happy to assist! Level 1: Shanghai (3:45-4:30) Basic Chinese conversation for beginners to give a working knowledge of the phases used in daily life. Level 2: Beijing (4:30-5:15) Get to know the basic of Pin Yin (character writing). Build up your knowledge of Chinese

writing and extend your vocabulary. Appropriate for intermediate level students who have a working knowledge of Chinese language. Level 3: Hong Kong (5:15-6:00) “Travel” around famous places in China, learn Chinese writing, speaking, and traditions. This level is appropriate for intermediate/ advanced students who are proficient at speaking and have a working knowledge of Pin Yin.

6. CREATIVE WRITING Find your voice as a writer this summer. Working closely with a published author, campers will learn to maximize their personal style. Approach any topic with confidence and flair while embracing your own perspective and tone. Leave feeling proud of your written masterpiece! 7. GAME, SET, MATCH Ready your racquet and try tennis! Young children in Kindergarten through Second Grade will be introduced to the basics of tennis. Players will learn the correct techniques of the forehand and backhand storkes as well as a general knowledge of the game. 8. GET FIT! Excercise and a healthy lifestyle can improve brain function - IT’S A FACT! GET FIT! will keep students UP AND MOVING and participating in activites to improve overall fitness level. 9. GO GREEK-PART 1! It is a known fact that 70% of the English language is derived from Latin and Greek languages. When students learn Greek and Latin Roots, these “building blocks” make it easy for them to recognize and decode unfamiliar words. In GET TO THE ROOT OF IT - PART 1, students will create an interactive notebook of Latin and Greek word stems and roots that will help them unlock words used in mathematics, science, social studies and everyday reading. 10. GO GREEK - PART II! Campers increase their knowledge of Greek and Latin Roots and continue adding to their interactive notebook. If students know the meaning of a root, they are more apt to determine the meaning of an unknown word that uses that root. Note: It is not required for students to have taken, GET TO THE ROOT OF IT PART 1!

11. GOING GREEN Come get your hands dirty in the Guthrie Garden as you learn basic botany skills. From muddy Monday to fruity Friday, we dig in to learn how plants, poeple and animals work together to keep growing! Gardeners will investigate plant life, discover symbiotic relationships all around them, and create their own “take home” garden. 12. GOOOOOOOOAL! This beginning soccer camp for Kindergarteners through Second Grade will help students gain an understanding of basic soccer skills,including dribbling, passing and shooting. They will also learn strategies of the game. 13. GRADES MATTER! Yes! It’s true, Middle Schoolers should care about grades because they do count! When should they start caring and why? Learn how to average your GPA and why you should care about it. Discover the importance of self-monitroing, the strategies for taking personal responsibility of your academic career, and maximizing those efforts.

14. HOOP IT UP! Hoop it up at Guthrie is for young athletes in kindergarten through Second Grade. players will practice the basics of basketball, including dribbling, passing, and shooting as well as learn techniques and strategies. 15. IT’S A ZOO OUT THERE Ever wonder where the wild things really are? They’re right here in our amazing animal camp where we learn about all different kinds of animals from mammoth mammals to deep-sea dwellers. We will come to understand the animal kingdom better by studying classification, habitat, behavior, physical features and food. At the end of the week, campers will have lap books, flipbooks and creative crafts to demonstrate what they’ve learned.

16. IT’S CLEARLY CURSIVE Get creative with cursive! in this camp, students will learn strokes, letters, and connection techniques through a variety of sensory and practice methods. Students will take away a clear understanding of the cursive alphabet, their own cursive copybook and the lifelong skill of pretty penmanship.

17. JUMP FOR JEWELS Excercise? I thought you said accessorize! In this fun and fashion forward camp, we will design and make our own accessories (bracelets, earrings, hairclips, etc.) Campers will use techniques such as braiding, beading, and more to craft their own dazzling designs!

18. KEYBOARDING Tired of writing those papers by hand? learn the basics of proper hand position, correct finger usage and learning to type without looking at the keys. The Herzog method is used in class and at the end of the session, each camper takes home a spiral-bound book of completed lessons. These can be used for practicing and keeping up with skills in order to start the next school year ready to type! A must-take class for all Middle Schoolers!

20. LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! (Drama) Quiet on the set! Now that school is out, it’s time to get dramatic! This camp will teach students the basic of musical theatre design, production, and performance. Learn technical terms, mastermind the misenscence, and get dramatic with dialogue. At the end of the second week, invite family and friends to celebrate your success on stage as you act, sing and dazzle in a play! ENCORE! This class will be taught by our very own music teacher, Jeanie Adamson.

21. LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! Young cartographers will love learning about continents, oceans and maps in this hands-on interactive geography class. Campers will get creative with the compass rose, make and taste a topographical feature map, fabricate a flipbook, and tackle a treasure map!

You will learn how to create your own Minecraft™ world, creepers, roller coasters, minecraft with chest, and much more. 25. PERU ROCKS! Come travel with us on an adventure to South America and discover many of the delightful sights and sounds of Peru! Visit the Amazon River, the Inca Empire, and Machu Picchu! Learn about this country’s amazing history and hear about its geographic regions including the Coast, the Andes and its thick lush jungles. Taste some delicious Peruvian food. Come on an unforgettable journey to Peru! This camp will be conducted in both English and Spanish.

26. PETITE PICASSO Let your inner artist come to life in this camp where every brushtroke is beautiful. Learn the basics of painting as you get creative on canvas. Campers will exploredifferent mediums as they learn more about composition, lighting, perspective and detail. 27. PHYSICS IN ACTION BRIDGES!

This camp is an interactive inquiry-based instructional camp designed to teach students about different types of bridges and set the foundation for the STEM principles involved in their construction. Campers will experience hands-on and research-based learning experiences to identify the

strengths and weaknesses of different types of bridges before students construct their own models. This camp will provide activites, collaborative problem solving, and an integrated approach to STEM, the process of scientificinvestigation. 28. RECYCLED RACERS Get behind the wheel of your own, hand-made, toy racers! Using recycled materials, students will learn the value of reduce, reuse, recycle and have fun designing and buidling their own toy cars out of unused items. But this isn’t just a camp where we turn trash into treasure. At the end of the week, campers will participate in the Recycled Racer Rally for a chance at first prize! 29. ROBO LEGO™ Discover the world of robotics with popular LEGO bricks! You can gain engineering knowledge of structure and design while learning how to generate and program a robot. Campers will have fun with the basics of cross-stitching by learning how to use cross-stich needles and colorful thread to make a pretty patterned picture. Our sensational stichers will take home their own sewn memory in a 6X6 frame.

32. SOMETHING SCIENCY We’re mad for science! In this camp, our junior scientists will learn about the scientic process via hands-on, safe experimentation. From building bottle rockets to gnarly non-newtonian fluid, campers will get down and dirty with STEAM projects and lessons.

31. SINK YOUR TEETH INTO A PARAGRAPH! Do you want your child to learn how to write big, juicy paragraphs that explode withflavor? In this class, students will enjoy learning to construct full, well-writen paragraphs using descriptive words and phrases by making simple, tasty treats with the teacher and then writing about them. 33. SPACE OUT! Blast off! This interactive STEM camp for grades 3-5 teaches about Earth and Space science using an inquiry approach. Zoom through space using hands-on activites to learn about objects in the sky and changes in the earth and sky. Through hands-on activities, campers will explore the size of each

planet and the vastness of space, and some special features of our solar system. Get creative designing a poster comparing one planet to another, the earth to the sun, and the sun to other stars. 35. STORYBOOK PRINCESS Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo! Travel through enchanted forests and magical lands with fairy tales by authors such as Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm. Dress up one day as your favorite character, enjoy a bag of popcorn while watching and discussing the original work with the adapted movie. It’s fun when you wish upon a star! 36. STORYBOOK STEW Crack open your cupboards and a good book! In this camp, our young students will discover the details behind their favorite storybook foods. Can you really make soup with stones? Come find out! Campers will read stories, create crafts, and whip up delicious dishes from popular picture books.

37. STUDY SKILLS Sharpen your pencils and your study skills in this camp designed to get students ready for school. Learn study tactics, organization strategies, note taking, and time management. The class will be split into two periods with a short break in between. The first period will involve instruction and the second period will involve practical application. Wholesome Food Services Wholesome Food Services is the Guthire School vendor who provides a heathy, unique and comprehensive school lunch program for our students. They partner with local “best in class” fresh casual restaurants to offer a wide variety of healthy lunch options. The Wholesome Food Services website makes it very easy to order lunches 24 hours to 60 days in advance. • • • • •

Student lunches are individally prepared fresh each day and delivered to The Guthrie School. Each restaurant is assigned a day of the week to deliver. You can place your orders online with secure credit card processing. You can order as much or as little as you like. You can order daily or whenever you choose to participate.

Complete ingredient lists are provided. Guthrie School parents can be confident their child is able to avoid allergy ingredients. Gluten free and vegetarian items are available on every menu.
