Halloween Dress Up at MMS Monday, October 31, 2016 Everyone is welcome to dress up on Halloween! In fact, you’ll get house points for dressing up. Here is the low-down on dressing up at MMS: The Good: • It is fun! J • Did we mention, you’ll get house points for dressing up? • You might end up in the yearbook on our Halloween page! The Bad (well, not bad, just a little more serious): • Your costume needs to follow regular school dress code rules: o Straps on tops at least 3” wide, no low cut or belly/underwear baring tops. o No sagging pants. All undergarments covered. o No masks of any kind. o No weapons of any kind. o Costumes must long enough; they should hang past your fingertips when arms are at your sides. o No non-prescription contacts (safety issue!) • You must have PE appropriate shoes for your PE class. • Please do not bring aerosol cans to school (for example, hair color or silly spray). • The theme of your costume cannot be anti-social, extremely violent, or culturally offensive. • The bottom line: If you’re not sure, it’s probably not appropriate. Feel free to ask a teacher, Mrs. Nichols, or Ms. Julie if you need clarification! The Ugly: • If your costume is inappropriate you’ll be asked to change. • If your costume disrupts the learning environment, you’ll be asked to change. • If you don’t have an outfit to change into, your family will be called and have to bring one to school for you. While that seems like a lot of rules, it’s really just the same rules that always apply. The MMS staff loves a chance to dress up and we are looking forward to seeing all of your creative costumes on Monday!

Halloween is a one of our favorite days at MMS each year! It is a time used to dress up as someone other than oneself. Unfortunately, many stores and online vendors sell stereotypical or offensive costumes. If you plan to dress up in a costume, please consider the impact your costume may have on other students and staff in our MMS family. When you dress up as someone from another culture (whether to be funny or even if you don’t mean to be disrespectful) it can lead to inaccurate or hurtful portrayals of other peoples’ cultures. Our goal this Halloween is that everyone has fun and that everyone feels safe and respected. Please feel free to ask office staff or teachers if you are not sure whether a costume is appropriate. We are happy to discuss it with you! We are looking forward to seeing all of your fabulous and creative costumes. It should be a great day!
