Hayward High School SPARC 2014 Support Personnel Accountability Report Card A continuous improvement document sponsored by the California Department of Education 1633 East Avenue, Hayward, California 94541 www.haywardhigh.net Principal: George Bullis Phone (510) 723-3170, Fax (510) 581-3145 Grade Levels: 9-12th Grade Enrollment: 1, 665 District: Hayward Unified School District Principals Message Hayward High School (HHS) strives to support all students in becoming career and college ready. Our college and career center coordinator organizes a variety of events, workshops, and field trips that highlight diverse post-secondary options for our students. These events are supported by our five academic counselors and their interns. Our Coordination of Services Team (C.O.S.T.), which includes representatives of all of our student support services, such as mental health therapists, attendance outreach workers, school counselors, etc., meets weekly to review ways to provide students support outside the classroom and create a safe campus. Because our Support Accountability Report Card (SPARC) is aligned with our Single Plan for Student Achievement, we have outlined two focus-for-improvement goals that will bolster the college and career readiness of our students. These goals are 1) to increase the graduation rate by a minimum of 10% as measured by the 2016 state-reported graduation rate and 2) to provide students with a safe learning environment and a school culture that is focused on preparing students for a successful future. To reach these goals, we aim to engage parents and community in supporting the achievement of students at HHS. Career and College Readiness Student Outcomes Members of the Student Support Team (SST) believe that promoting opportunities for student outcomes is fundamental for preparing students and their families for successful college and career plans. Student outcomes in the areas of college, career, and 21st century skills were chosen to demonstrate our dedication and contribution to the preparation and success of our students during and after high school. Career Readiness The counselor interns presented post-secondary options to all 9th and 10th graders. They were able to create and submit electronic four-year educational plans to their counselors. Data shows that 77% of the 9th graders completed and submitted their 4-year plans, while 64.5% of the 10th graders completed and submitted their 4-year plans. Last year (2013), 38% of the 9th graders completed and submitted their plans and 43% of the 10th graders completed and submitted their plans. College Readiness The SST has implemented various guidance lessons in order to promote college readiness among our student body. One major achievement has been our lessons regarding A-G requirements presented to 13 Health Freshmen classes and 13 World History Sophomore classes. The chart below illustrates that 433 ninth grade students and 415 tenth grades students have demonstrated an understanding of the A-G sequences of courses required for UC and CSU admissions.
21st Century Skills The SST promotes an array of extracurricular activities that provide opportunities for students to gain 21st century skills in leadership, community service, and teamwork. Active student involvement is reflected in our 16 sports teams, 25 clubs, and strong student government/leadership department. For 20132014, 269 of our students participated in fall and winter sports teams. Along with sports, 144 of our students were also members in our wide variety of clubs and 29 students are enrolled in the leadership class.
Other examples of student outcomes that document our career and college readiness efforts include • 144 (37%) eleventh graders and 147 (41%) twelfth graders are enrolled in at least one Advanced Placement class. • 366 tenth graders (90%) and 120 eleventh graders (31%) took the 2013 PSAT exam. • 361 (100%) seniors participated in AT LEAST ONE FAFSA/Financial Aid guidance lesson.
