South LA Muslims, Civic Leaders Team Up to Deliver ‘Safety through Service’ on Saturday (Los Angeles - 12/16/15) -- Gang violence in South L.A. is on the rise, with the Los Angeles Times reporting that it has spiked 11% since last year. In September, local activists, organizations, urban media publications, and community leaders took to the streets to declare “No more violence!” When the Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity (CPHD) went into local parks and gang territories to initiate building safe communities of resilience this fall, they heard one sentiment over and over again from active community leaders, “Our families and the community need services.” The ILM Foundation, UMMA Clinic, and Stop The Violence Increase the Peace Foundation teaming up to answer this urgent call with “Safety through Service” Humanitarian Day. “Humanitarian Day is about answering the call to push back against violence and poverty with direct services, resources and civic engagement,” said Umar Hakim, Executive Director of the ILM Foundation. “We invite our fellow Angelinos to join us as volunteers to inspire people, protect American morality, and help one another. We hope this event will become an annual initiative to promote wellness and peace in negatively impacted areas throughout Los Angeles.” This Saturday, December 19, the CPHD will host Humanitarian Day (HDAY) in South Los Angeles; bringing medical and dental screenings, hygiene products, line items for 500 local children and adults.
