Scholarship Information

Scholarship Day will be on 17th January 2015. The deadline for handing in forms is on 8th December 2014.

Hillcrest Secondary School offer Scholarships to recognise academic, artistic, dramatic, musical, athletic and all round talent to new or current Hillcrest Prep School students entering years 9. Scholarships are awarded to those judged worthy of scholar status: the very best of the candidates will be offered an award which carries a reduction of the tuition fee in Year 9 and will be continued if performance is maintained. The criteria and procedures for each award is described below. It is not possible for candidates to enter for more than one kind of award. All scholarships are reviewed annually. It is school policy that scholarships, bursaries and family discounts do not aggregate. Only the largest will apply at any one time. Any scholar who does not meet our expectations may have the award decreased or terminated. Parents would have a right of appeal. Common Entrance (CE) candidates are automatically eligible for our CE awards that are offered to the student with the best overall results in the CE examinations marked at Hillcrest. The Headteacher of the candidate’s present school should have been advised of any scholarship application. When the application has been received, the candidate’s present Headteacher will be approached for a confidential report. Academic Scholarships The Year 9 Academic Scholarships will be by examination in three subjects: English, Mathematics and one other of the candidate’s choice. The Mathematics examination requires candidates to bring a calculator and geometry set. The examination is composed of multiple choice test with five answers to each question. The scholarships are awarded on academic merit and potential.

All Rounder Scholarships Year 9 candidates applying for the All Rounder Awards should show academic competence in English and Mathematics as well as high achievement in two of the following: Art, Drama, Music or Sport. The Scholarships will be by examination in English and Mathematics, and by assessment and interview in the other 2 disciplines. For the assessments, pupils should bring with them a portfolio of certificates and/or work related to their talents in the areas selected. Art Scholarships Students will undertake an examination which will be in three parts: 1. Part one is the submission of work, which should not only show a candidate’s present ability, but should also indicate potential development. The work should be as varied as possible revealing knowledge of artistic techniques and the systematic use of a variety of media. The work should show evidence of original thought and the ability to develop a theme or idea in a sequential way. 2. Part two takes the form of a one-hour practical assessment in which the candidate is required to draw from observation. The subject will be a still life set up by the department. 3. Part three takes the form of an interview during which the candidate will have the opportunity to discuss their work. It is expected that students who are awarded Art Scholarships will continue to IGCSE if in year 9 (scholarship provision of course to be reviewed at the end of Year 9). Scholarship candidates are expected to act as role models and are encouraged to participate fully in co-curricular art activities. Art scholars will also be given responsibilities within the department and encouraged to develop their potential both in and out of school.

Drama Scholarships All candidates must bring a portfolio including any posters, programmes, awards and photographs relating to any productions or qualifications they have been involved in. All candidates must come to audition with a prepared monologue of approximately two minutes length. Please note that Drama Scholarships are contingent on the student studying drama beyond Year 9. Scholar progress will be reviewed regularly.

Music Scholarships Music scholarship awards require self-motivated musicians who are willing to do public performances as required by the school, play and/or sing in at least one school ensemble and take responsibilities in the marketing of music as a subject and activity within the school community. This potential can be shown at the audition by a portfolio showing past performances, certificates, recommendation letters, photographs and through discussion. All students awarded music scholarships will be required to take the music GCSE course during years 10 and 11. For all auditions, students must prepare a piece that best demonstrates their current abilities. The Head of Department will be looking for good tone, rhythm, articulation/diction, intonation and expression. As well as playing a prepared piece, the student may be asked to do a choice of a simple improvisation or some sightreading. If a candidate plays more than one instrument (including voice), they may perform on both. Candidates applying for a full music scholarship will be required on the day of the audition to sit an aural perception test and participate in a group improvisation task with other candidates.

Sports Scholarship The Awards are made to candidates of outstanding ability or potential in the field of Sports. They presuppose a high degree of motivation and commitment on the part of the candidate. These will normally be reflected in high representative honours for school or country. Students who have participated in club level sports or international events should bring a report or letter from their coaches. Those whose strengths are in swimming should come with a data record sheet for their times at various National or International galas. On Scholarship Day applicants will be required to bring the following items for the application: a portfolio that includes certificates, photos, a list of achievements, sports colours and a Games teachers’ confidential report (in a sealed envelope). Students will also be required to take a practical test, therefore, students must bring: a swimming costume, hockey stick and shin pads, mouth guard and sports shoes, and smart school PE uniform. During the interview process applicants will be expected to discuss issues over and above the applicants sporting success. Applicants must consider their strengths and weaknesses, what they can offer Hillcrest and what they hope to gain from Hillcrest. Each term Sports Scholarship pupils will be reviewed. Expectations will be clearly set out at the beginning of the scholarship. The review is a two way process and pupils are asked to bring their own ideas and suggestions to the discussion.
