Research Assistant/ Winter Barley Breeding National Recruited Staff

Reports to: Senior Barley Breeder Location: Ankara, Turkey

Closing date: 22 June 2014

Main purpose of the position To assist the barley breeder in all duties and responsibilities needed to carry out the winter barley breeding program.

Main responsibilities          

Undertaking field evaluation of all barley (winter barley breeding programs) trials at different stations of ICARDA in Turkey Supervision of daily workers Land preparation, sowing, harvesting, threshing, and weed control of breeding experiments Recording data on various aspects of breeding activities and bookkeeping of the breeding program Assisting in planting, preparation of field plans, and production of field books Computerizing pedigrees and data of different experiments, germplasm evaluations and breeding materials Preparing seed materials for various nurseries for planting at research stations and on farmers’ fields Collecting, managing and summarizing data Managing of greenhouse activities and crossing program Perform any other job assigned as per requirement of program

Education, qualifications and experience        

B.Sc. or Diploma in Agriculture or related subjects and considerable demonstrated ability in field & laboratory research. 4 to 5 years of experience in related fields. Experience in laboratory techniques, related to plant breeding and genetics (including biotechnology). Ability to work in a team. Computer data entry and analysis skills (MS Office, Windows, etc.). Good command of English Army training either completed or exempted for male applicants National driving license

Terms of appointment, salary and benefits The initial period of employment will be for 2 years. The first year will be probationary period. Subsequent employment is decided based on the merit and productivity of the staff member, and continued need for the position. Starting salary will depend on relevant qualifications and experience.
