HEALTH OCCUPATIONS CENTER

ETHICS The nature of the healthcare industry requires high morals, a strong work ethic, and a mature approach to responsibility. You will be caring for people in our community when they need your knowledge and expertise. It is crucial that you develop a sense of professionalism in your field. Always keep your morals, your knowledge, and your professionalism in the forefront of your dealings with everyone you come into contact with. As a health occupations student in an adult education center, you are expected to follow appropriate standards of adult behavior conducting yourself in a professional manner. Appropriate classroom and campus behaviors will lead to appropriate workplace behaviors. We are here to teach you medical and technical skills as well as real-world skills.

CODE OF ETHICS FOR STUDENTS AT THE HEALTH OCCUPATIONS CENTER 1. To live and practice my medical vocation with the greatest integrity, good will, and professionalism 2. To be sincere in my efforts and generous in my service 3. To conduct myself in a spirit of friendly helpfulness to my fellow classmates and co-workers 4. To consider no duty beneath my dignity if it means the welfare and comfort of my patient 5. To become a life-long learner by continuous reading, study, and observation 6. To respect diversity in my patients, coworkers, and those I come into contact with 7. To hold in confidence all information entrusted to me 8. To be a resourceful person who readily adapts to changes in assignments and conditions 9. To know my limitations and stay within the bounds of those limitations 10. To remember that I will consider no personal success legitimate or ethical which is secured by taking unfair advantage of another 11. To participate and share responsibilities in promoting efforts to meet the health needs of my patients and the community 12. EXPECTATIONS OF ALL STUDENTS HOC is part of the Grossmont Union High School District. We follow all rules, regulations, and policies as determined by the district. Remember back in high school? Remember what you couldn’t do in high school? The same rules apply here. All students enrolled at the Health Occupations Center will follow all policies as set by the Grossmont Union High School District as well as the following:

CAMPUS POLICIES 1. Demonstrate courtesy to all staff, visitors, and fellow students. 2. Follow speed limit and direction signs in the parking lot. 3. Park in the student parking areas only. No student parking in upper lot. 4. Keep your personal belongings with you at all times. Do not leave money or valuables in the classroom, in your car, or at your internship site. If you don’t need it, leave it at home. HOC will not be responsible for missing items. 5. Dress code: Medical professional attire; scrubs. No hats or hoods. No logos displaying any tobacco, alcohol, weapons, etc. Pants must be kept at waist; no sagging pants; no undergarments showing. GUHSD Dress code can be found at http://www.guhsd.net/index.php/general-policies 6. Be respectful of the campus, classroom, supplies, and equipment available to you. Treat all items carefully and safely. School supplies and equipment may be used for educational purposes only. You may not use any HOC supplies or equipment for personal use. You may not take any HOC supplies or equipment off campus. 7. Always think SAFETY! • Please be advised: the school district does not cover you for any injury sustained on campus. This includes classroom/lab work. Students often practice medical skills on each other. This may lead to an injury. If you sustain any injury on campus, you are responsible for the cost of any care, treatment, and/or doctor visits that may be needed. • Do not use any equipment until you have been properly trained and are “cleared” to operate it by your instructor. • If you see someone breaking a safety protocol, report it to the instructor immediately. This is for their benefit, your classmates, and their future patients. • If you see something that is a safety hazard, report it to your instructor immediately. 8. The following are prohibited on campus: a. Smoking: cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, electronic cigarettes, “vapor”, or any device that resembles cigarettes or smoking of any kind. b. Bringing family, children, or pets to school c. Profanity d. Bullying or harassment of any kind e. Possession of drugs or alcohol; being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. This includes marijuana used for medical purposes. f. Weapons of any kind g. Cheating, plagiarism 6

CLASSROOM POLICIES 1. Attend all class meetings; notify the instructor per course protocol for any

absence. 2. Be punctual to class and clinical/work site. 3. You will work in close proximity to other students and patients. Be aware of your personal

hygiene; shower daily, mouth care, use deodorant, etc. 4. Follow the dress code for your particular program. Wear your ID badge when on campus,

clinical sites, and internships.

5. During class: a. Sign in and out each day. Ensure your times accurately reflect your attendance. b. Listen and participate actively and positively. c. Be a cooperative team player. d. Stay in your seat or work station. Leave only at break time or by permission of the instructor. e. Refrain from monopolizing class discussion or talking unless contributing to classroom activity. f. No food or drinks in classrooms. Water is OK. g. No personal cell phone use in class. h. Cheating and/or plagiarism will not be allowed; you may be dropped from the program immediately. 6. Communicate with your instructor when you need assistance. Your instructor is dedicated

to your success. HOC teachers are open to discussing your needs and concerns regarding the course. 7. All students have the right to an environment that is safe and conducive to learning. Any

conduct which is disruptive to other student’s ability to learn will not be tolerated. If you exhibit inappropriate classroom behavior, you may be dropped from the program. 8. Extended Medical Leave: Your health is very important to your learning experience. If you

are having on-going medical concerns, you may be counseled to drop the class and resume at a later date. This is for your benefit and for your health. There WILL be a better time to take the class. Get better, get strong again, and come back and register when you are well. 9. A special bond develops between student and teacher, student to patient, and student to

student. Here are some guidelines: • Gifts to teachers are not encouraged. The best gift you can give is to be a successful student, and ultimately successful working in the healthcare field. So, please no gifts. • It is unethical for you to accept any gift from a patient. This includes money, personal gifts, etc. Even under the best intentions, do not accept the gift. Thank them, and be firm, yet pleasant in your refusal. • Instructors will decline invitations to personal parties and gatherings. As your instructor, they have an ethical responsibility to remain your “teacher”. 7

ATTENDANCE POLICY The Health Occupations Center believes that regular attendance is necessary for students to meet the stated objectives of each program, which includes the demonstration of responsible behavior. Absence in class means a lost opportunity of education on a specific topic. This lack of knowledge can be transmitted to mistakes or errors in direct patient care, thereby jeopardizing the patient’s well-being. Make-up work can never fully replace the activities of the regular class period. It is vital that you make attendance in your class a priority! This is your future. We are here to help you prepare for it…but you must be in class for us to teach and for you to learn. The attendance policy of the Health Occupations Center is: any student who is absent more than 6% of the course hours may be placed on probation. Any student that misses more than 10% absences may necessitate being dropped from the course. Verifying Attendance It is the responsibility of each student to sign in and out on the “Program Sign-in Sheet”. This is a legal document to verify your attendance each day. Actual in and out times should be noted accurately. Neglecting to “sign in” will automatically record student absent for that day. Do not sign in or out for anyone other than yourself!

BACKGROUND CHECK As a student in a medical program with a clinical or internship component, you may be required to have a background check and/or fingerprinting to ensure the safety of the patients. If you have any criminal conviction other than a minor traffic violation this may prohibit you from working in the medical field. Clinics, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities want their volunteers and paid staff to be clear of any convictions. The medical field is especially sensitive to drug and alcohol related violations. If you have concerns about prior criminal activity, a list of penal code violations is available upon request. See your instructor.

DISMISSAL POLICY It is our goal to see every student succeed. However, if any student breaks any of the above campus, classroom, or personal policies, they may be dropped from their program. Any behavior that is disruptive to another student’s ability to learn will not be tolerated. We cannot anticipate and write down each and every scenario that may necessitate dismissal from HOC. So, any behavior deemed inappropriate by your instructor (or any staff, faculty, or administration) will be brought to the HOC director for consequences. If the behavior warrants dismissal, you will be asked to leave the campus immediately. You will not return until you meet with your instructor, the HOC director, and/or Adult Education administrators. If you disagree with the findings of the HOC administration, you may “grieve” the decision. Information on the GUHSD grievance policy is on the following pages.

COMPLAINT / GRIEVANCE POLICY In conjunction with the Grossmont Union High School District, the Health Occupations Center has developed the following policy for students who believe their rights have been abridged, or where the student desires to make a complaint.

Procedure 1.

When a student feels she/he has a grievance, an attempt should first be made to settle the matter with the instructor(s) or person(s) involved. Students have the responsibility of discussing program and course content with individual instructors first.

2.

If settlement cannot be reached, the student(s) may bring the complaint to the Director of the Health Occupations Center within 10 days of the cause for the complaint.

3.

If these informal attempts to resolve the problem fail, a formal complaint may be prepared. (See Grievance Form, next page.)

Formal Complaint Procedure 1.

The formal complaint must be presented in writing to the Director of the Health Occupations Center within 7 days after the date of the informal meeting. The written complaint shall include: Details on the specific complaint Any supporting documentation Names of parties involved Steps that have already been taken in an attempt to resolve

The HOC Director will speak to the involved parties. The aggrieved student should submit a response within 5 days.

Should attempts to resolve the grievance fail, the student may contact the Adult Education Director. The Adult Education Director will review the written complaints, supporting documentation, and speak with the involved parties. The Adult Education Director will then make a determination on the status of the grievance. 9

I will be careful with what personal information and images I share about myself. I will protect passwords, accounts, and resources. I will not use district resources for inappropriate and/or unlawful activities. I will report any attacks or inappropriate behavior directed at me. 2.

Respect and Protect Others Everything in #1 also applies to my treatment of others. I will not use any medium to bully, harass, or stalk other people. I will not share information and images about others without permission, and I will not tag them on social media without their consent. I will show respect for other people by not using/altering their passwords/accounts. I will report any attacks or inappropriate behavior directed at others.

Respect and Protect Intellectual and Physical Property I will not plagiarize the work of others and I will abide by copyright laws. I will only use the school’s technology, network, and resources for school-appropriate activities and encourage others to do the same. I will treat the school’s digital equipment with care. I will follow testing protocols. I will not share or photograph testing materials.

In today’s world of social media and extensive communication via the Internet, there is NO distinction between online and offline activities regarding school behavior and the assignment of disciplinary consequences. I understand that the rules for behavior set by the district and school cover both physical and digital actions by students and interactions among students. Additionally, these policies apply to use of district and personal devices both ON and OFF campus. By signing below, I agree to follow the principles of digital citizenship outlined in this agreement and accept that failing to follow these guidelines will have consequences. I understand school/district administrators will deem what is inappropriate use, take appropriate action, and determine consequences.
