HOW WILL YOU CHANGE YOUR WORLD? Freshman Humanities Summer reading – Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie (by David Lubar)
Our hope as you enter the high school in just two months, is to make your transition as smooth as possible. We are here to support and guide you; and one of the ways we hope to do this is by reading about Scott Hudson and his journey as a freshman. “ A hush fell over our cluster of freshmen, cloaking us with that same sense of dread that ancient civilizations must have felt during a solar eclipse. But we weren’t awestruck by a dragon eating the sun. We were facing a much less mythical danger. Older kids “ (Lubar 11). Please read about Scott this summer and complete the following assignment so we can start this exciting journey together. Bring the book and assignment with you to Humanities on the first day of school – Tuesday, August 30. I. While you read, please think about the questions listed below (review the questions before you start reading the novel). II. After reading, choose TWO of the following questions to answer. Each response should be one or two paragraphs, and we strongly encourage you to type your answers. While these can be informal and personal, we ask that you write using complete sentences using standard English grammar (no “texting” language). There will be discussions and activities centered around your responses on our first day together. Choose TWO questions to answer in 12 paragraphs each . This will be collected on the first day of class. 1) How much of Scott’s experiences do you think will be similar to your experiences at BHS, and how much of his experiences do you think will be different? 2) In what way does this book remind you of any other books you have read or movies you have seen? Please explain in detail . 3) Think about the book’s title. “Lie” means both to lie down and to not tell the truth. Who has Scott lied to? How do both of the interpretations about the word “lie” sum up his first year in high school? Do you think this is a good title for the book? 4) What are the important themes in the novel? 5) Describe Scott as a character at the beginning & the end of the novel. Has he changed? How so? 6) What advice, do you think, Scott would give you & your peers as your first year of high school? Have an amazing summer and have fun with this assignment! We look forward to reading and hearing about your ideas. If you have any questions, please email us. Morning Team: Afternoon Team: Mr. Raynard:
