January 29, 2016 Dear Families, Our students are 21st century learners and their iPads are essential components for learning. The development of technology skills is essential to prepare students for their education, career, and personal lives. Your children are connected more than ever before, and are surrounded by evolving digital technologies on a daily basis. Last week, our district sent home a letter regarding parental controls for your child’s iPad. This was in response to a concern we received from a parent regarding an inappropriate digital book download from the iBooks store followed by the discovery that even more could be downloaded. Please note that our district enables iPad restrictions to block explicit materials from iBooks on all student iPads. In addition, Apple has a semantics filter to sort and block certain books with detectable inappropriate vocabulary patterns. Furthermore, our district is in strict compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), a federal law passed by Congress in 2000, which requires schools to use filtering to block dangerous or offensive material from minor users. However, digital information is created at a high speed and, with over 2.5 million books available on iBooks, it is possible for books to sneak through Apple’s filter. Since contacting Apple about the specific book, the company has blocked the specific title from the iBooks store at our request. As a school district, we have an obligation to keep our students safe. We have many precautionary measures in place to prevent inappropriate material from reaching your child, but there are no guarantees that we can prevent such incidents. In response to this discovery about the book download, our district administration strongly considered blocking the iBooks Store completely for all students. However, our research suggested that this very cautious action would likely have unintended consequences, such as encouraging students to use a potentially dangerous third-party app to download media that may contain malicious viruses or information-mining software. Additionally, blocking iBooks Store would prevent access to appropriate text materials for our students and we do not want to discourage students from reading and having choice of text. Our district has decided to focus on: • teaching digital citizenship to our students. • continue to restrict explicit materials. • report inappropriate material to Apple as we are made aware. • deferring to parents to make their own decision about whether to block iBooks Store for their own children. If a parent feels that some content in the bookstore is not categorized correctly, they can also submit feedback to Apple via iTunes help at http://apple.com/support. It is, and will continue to be, against school rules for students to download or access inappropriate materials and content on their iPad. All students and families have agreed to the Acceptable Use Policy which states that, “Students are expected to follow the same rules for good behavior and respectful conduct online as offline.” Please note that students are not allowed to bring inappropriate materials, Phone: (541) 830-1200 • Fax: (541) 830-6550 or (541) 830-6566 • www.eaglepnt.k12.or.us

whether print or digital, to school. Inappropriate media (images, books, videos, etc.) are prohibited from district-owned devices, including iPads. We believe parents know what’s best for their children, and each parent is responsible for supervising his or her own child. You know which apps and/or restrictions are best for your standards, interests, and beliefs. You can control what your children are exposed to by supervising their iPad and monitoring usage at home. You are also able to block iBooks Store, as well as other apps, by using the iPad Restrictions. If you would like the school district to disable iBooks Store from your child’s current iPad, please complete the online form: http://goo.gl/forms/15XZf1YiJh. You may also call 541-830-6196 and leave a message with your child’s name, grade, and attending school.

How to enable iPad restrictions:

Tap Settings > General. Tap Restrictions. Tap Enable Restrictions and create a passcode* for Restrictions. Make your selections to allow or disallow certain iPad features.

*Don’t forget your passcode. In the future, you'll need your Restrictions passcode to change your settings or to turn off Restrictions. If you lose or forget your Restrictions passcode, your child's device will need to be completely erased and then set it up as a new device to remove the Restrictions passcode.

Freedom to Read The freedom to read is a joy, a privilege, and the right of every student. As you choose the books you will check out or download to read, understand that not every book is the right choice for every student. If a book is unappealing or offensive to you in any way, please return it or remove it from your iPad. You know which books are best for you and your standards, reading level, interests, and beliefs. Choose wisely.

Respectfully,

Cynda Rickert Superintendent

Atentamente,

Cynda Rickert El superintendente Phone: (541) 830-1200 • Fax: (541) 830-6550 or (541) 830-6566 • www.eaglepnt.k12.or.us
