MONTHLY ELECTRICITY STATISTICS May 2017
HIGHLIGHTS
May 2017 vs. May 2016 Total OECD electricity production reached 832.2 TWh in May 2017, an increase of 2.8%, or 22.4 TWh, over the same month last year. ‐ Production from Combustible Fuels grew by 2.4% in the OECD compared to May 2016, with a decrease of 0.4% in OECD Americas and increases of 0.3% in OECD Asia Oceania and 10.4% in OECD Europe. ‐ Production from Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other grew by 13.1% in the OECD compared to May 2016. There were increases of 28.4% in OECD Americas and 18.7% in OECD Asia Oceania and a decrease of 0.1% in OECD Europe.
January ‐ May 2017 vs. the same period in 2016 Total OECD electricity production reached 4 304.8 TWh, an increase of 0.8%, or 33.2 TWh, over the same period last year.
‐ Electricity supply for the months January – May 2017 was 0.7% above the level for the same period in 2016. This comprised increases in all regions of 1.6% in OECD Asia Oceania, 0.5% in OECD Europe and 0.4% in OECD Americas.
‐ The share of electricity production from Combustible Fuels grew by 0.6 percentage points, while that of Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other grew by 1 percentage point. Additionally, Nuclear and Hydro fell by 0.9 and 0.6 percentage points, respectively.

‐ Electricity production was 832.2 TWh in May 2017. ‐ This was 22.4 TWh higher, or 2.8%, compared to May 2016 and 34.7 TWh, or 4.3%, higher compared to April 2017. ‐ Combustible Fuels production grew by 5.6%, an increase of 24.7 TWh, compared to the previous month. ‐ Total production for the year‐to‐date was 4 304.8 TWh. Comparing this to the same period last year shows that: ‐ Total production was higher by 33.2 TWh, or 0.8%. ‐ Combustible Fuels production grew by 1.8%, an increase of 42.8 TWh ‐ Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other production increased by 11.5%, or 44.6 TWh. ‐ Trade volume decreased by 3.9 TWh, or 0.9%.

‐ Electricity production was 412.7 TWh in May 2017. ‐ This was 12.8 TWh higher, or 3.2%, compared to May 2016 and 31.0 TWh, or 8.1%, higher compared to April 2017. ‐ Combustible Fuels production grew by 11.7%, an increase of 24.4 TWh, compared to the previous month. ‐ Total production for the year‐to‐date was 2 026.1 TWh. Comparing this to the same period last year shows that: ‐ Total production was higher by 8.7 TWh, or 0.4%. ‐ Combustible Fuels production reduced by 2.8%, a decrease of 33.0 TWh ‐ Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other production increased by 19.6%, or 30.2 TWh. ‐ Trade volume increased by 6.5 TWh, or 9.5%.

Comparing this to the same period last year shows that: ‐ Total production was higher by 12.1 TWh, or 1.6%. ‐ Combustible Fuels production grew by 2.3%, an increase of 14.0 TWh ‐ Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other production increased by 20.8%, or 7.5 TWh.

‐ Electricity production was 273.8 TWh in May 2017. ‐ This was 7.6 TWh higher, or 2.9%, compared to May 2016 and 1.1 TWh, or 0.4%, higher compared to April 2017. ‐ Combustible Fuels production grew by 0.5%, an increase of 0.6 TWh, compared to the previous month. ‐ Total production for the year‐to‐date was 1 491.4 TWh. Comparing this to the same period last year shows that: ‐ Total production was higher by 12.4 TWh, or 0.8%. ‐ Combustible Fuels production grew by 9.5%, an increase of 61.9 TWh ‐ Hydro production showed the largest percentage change by energy source, being 15.2% lower. ‐ Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other production increased by 3.5%, or 6.8 TWh. ‐ Trade volume decreased by 10.4 TWh, or 2.9%.

‐ Electricity production was 326 050 GWh in May 2017. ‐ This was 6 253 GWh, or 2%, higher compared to May 2016 and 28 486 GWh, or 9.6%, higher compared to April 2017. ‐ Combustible Fuels production grew by 12.7%, an increase of 22 271 GWh, compared to the previous month. ‐ Total production for the year‐to‐date was 1 583 531 GWh. Comparing this to the same period last year shows that: ‐ Total production was lower by 5 997 GWh, or 0.4%. ‐ Combustible Fuels production reduced by 3.6%, a decrease of 35 931 GWh. ‐ Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other production increased by 20.2%, or 25 945 GWh. ‐ Trade volume increased by 3 191 GWh, or 9.1%.

Monthly Electricity Statistics
PRINCIPLES AND DEFINITIONS The IEA's Monthly Electricity Statistics provides timely electricity production and trade data for member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co‐operation and Development (OECD). It aims to report as up‐to‐date and consistent information as possible for the last three months. It also provides previous annual data and year‐to‐date indicators.
General notes ‐ Electricity production and trade data are reported at the individual country level as well as in organisational and regional groupings. These groupings include: OECD Total, OECD Americas, OECD Asia Oceania, OECD Europe and IEA Total. ‐ The units are terawatt hours (TWh) for the regional groupings and gigawatt hours (GWh) for the individual countries. ‐ The grouping of electricity generation by source reflects available monthly data and/or small individual quantities. ‐ Definitions are consistent with the IEA's "Electricity and Heat" annual questionnaire. Statistics are subject to revision on official receipt of the annual questionnaire from national administrations or on improved data becoming available. ‐ To enable timely publication, the IEA may supplement national statistics with data from other sources. ‐ Where adequate information is not available from external sources, estimates have been made by the IEA. Methodological notes are provided in individual country pages. ‐ Monthly data are consistent with those provided in the quarterly "Oil, Gas, Coal and Electricity" book published by the IEA. ‐ All figures for individual countries are reported to the nearest whole number and totals may not equal the sum of components due to rounding. ‐ Note that historic data are often recalculated. Therefore, the latest publication should be considered the most accurate. Regional and organisational summaries may also change based on country recalcuations. ‐ Countries' submitted monthly data is adjusted proportionately to maintain consistency with the most recent annual data for each generation source.

Nuclear Hydro Geoth./Wind/Solar/Other
Electricity supplied
Electricity produced using heat generated from nuclear fission. Net generation from hydro facilities including pumped storage production. Generation from geothermal, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, wind, tide, wave, ocean and other non‐combustible sources. The sum of electricity production by energy source. Amounts of electricity that have crossed political boundaries of the country, whether customs clearance has taken place or not. Indigenous production + Imports ‐ Exports. It includes transmission and distribution losses.
Year Year‐to‐Date
Calendar year (January to December) unless otherwise stated. The sum of all months from the start of the calendar year to the latest month.
Indigenous Production Imports/ Exports
Production from fossil fuels (primary coal, coal products, peat and peat products, oil shale and oil sands, crude oil, NGL, oil products, natural gas) and combustible renewables and wastes (solid biofuels, biogases, liquid biofuels, industrial and municipal waste).
