Navigating University Institutional Review Boards: Challenges and Recommendations John McE. Davis, Alison Mackey, Mark Sicoli Initiative for Multilingual Studies (IMS) Panel Discussion Date: Tuesday, February 24 Time: 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. Location: Poulton 230 Abstract: Research related to multilingualism takes a variety of forms, spanning the ‘qualitative’ to ‘quantitative’ spectrum. Regardless of methodology or purpose, research that involves human subjects and is conducted at a university must meet the expectations for appropriate, beneficial, and ethical practice as stipulated by institutional review boards. However, given the diversity of multilingual research traditions, it can be daunting for student and faculty researchers to understand and navigate IRB expectations (e.g., for informed consent, data collection procedures, anonymity, security); likewise, it may be that IRB reviewers have little understanding of the nature of research practices specific to multilingual domains, leading to confusion and delay in the review process. This workshop addresses IRB challenges associated with distinct types of multilingual research. Presenters will address issues typically encountered as they and their students pursue IRB approval for research across a wide array of multilingual domains, and they (with input from the audience) will recommend solutions. A representative from the Georgetown IRB will also attend to field questions and offer suggestions. NOTE: Participation may be limited due to space. If you plan to take part in the workshop, please email Dr. John Norris (
