Job Announcement The Center for Development Research (ZEF) is an institute of the University of Bonn, Germany. ZEF's researchers aim to find science‐based solutions to development‐related issues. ZEF’s research departments on Economic and Technological Change, Political and Cultural Change, and Ecology and Natural Resources Management conduct inter and transdisciplinary research in, for and with emerging economies and on global issues with its collaborating research partners around the world. ZEF educates doctoral students from all over the world in its Doctoral Studies Program. More information is available at www.zef.de. The ProciNut project is a research and capacity building project in Myanmar and Madagascar, financed by the German Ministry of Agriculture, which aims at better exploiting the nutritional potential of edible insects. It tests different processing techniques of local insect species and expands commercial small‐scale farm activities and processing to produce safe and nutritious end products that are able to close seasonal gaps, increase nutritional security of households and improve the income situation of poor women. Key features of the project are participatory action research in Myanmar and Madagascar, gender as a cross‐cutting issue as well as transdisciplinarity. ZEF offers a stipend for a:

Doctoral Researcher (m/f) in Entomology (edible insect production) Main responsibilities will be: ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐

Participate in ex‐ante analysis together with the interdisciplinary team and use the results to design own research; Design, conduct and evaluate participatory entomological experiments in small scale producers enterprises and overall analysis of data ‐ all in tandem with PhD students in Madagascar and Myanmar; Organize laboratory analyses of edible insects and disseminate results to project team; Support and participate in knowledge exchange excursion to Thailand; Contribute to farmer training courses and to publications for the extension practice (training materials on insect rearing, handbook and guidelines for policy makers/extension agents); Publish peer‐reviewed articles and participate in international conferences; Foster joint learning within the multidisciplinary project team; Contribute to the other project work packages.

Education, qualifications and experience: The candidate must have: ‐ A MSc. degree preferably in entomology or related disciplines; ‐ Proven (first) experience in edible insect rearing/production in the Global North and/or South; ‐ Team player, excellent communication skills; ‐ Interest and demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multi‐cultural environment; ‐ Excellent proficiency in oral and written English and ideally in French; ‐ Willingness to travel extensively to Myanmar and Madagascar (including several weeks at a time); ‐ Interest in agriculture and no cultural barrier to human consumption of insects/ entomophagy ‐ Ability to work independently, efficiently and target oriented. Other elements which may be an advantage for the applicant: ‐ Work experience in Africa and/ or Asia ‐ Experience in academic writing, first publications in national/international journals, book chapters, reports;

We offer a three year stipend of 1000 Euro (lump sum per month). In addition all travel and research expenses will be covered. There is the possibility to join the ZEF doctoral program. The position is expected to start July 2018.
