Job Announcement  GlobalHort—The Global Horticulture Initiative is an international consortium promoting innovation in  horticulture  for  development  with  a  multi‐sectorial  and  multiple‐actor  approach.  It  is  a  worldwide  enterprise intended to foster more efficient and effective partnerships and collective action among  stakeholders  in  horticulture.  It  is  organized  into  a  consortium  of  national  and  international  organizations  to  collaborate  in  research,  training  and  technology‐generating  activities.  GlobalHort  encourages  and  advocates  the  use  of  horticulture  for  development  by  supporting  and  initiating  actions  that  endeavor  a  better  employment  of  horticultural  crop  production,  marketing  and  consumption  to  create  wealth  and  improve  human  health  and  wellbeing  especially  in  the  world’s  poorest countries. More information is available at www.globalhort.org.  Together  with  other  partners,  GlobalHort  is  involved  in  a  new  research  project  about  diversifying  agriculture  for  balanced  nutrition  through  fruits  and  vegetables  in  multi‐storey  cropping  systems,  which  will  include  field  research  in  Ethiopia  and  Madagascar.  Key  features  of  the  project  are  participatory action research, gender as a cross‐cutting issue as well as multidisciplinarity.  Subject to the final project approval by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL),  GlobalHort offers a part‐time position for a:   

Senior Research Fellow for Capacity Development and Knowledge Transfer  (50 % part time)    Main responsibilities will be:     

     

To analyze the relevant Ethiopian extension system and to identify the capacity gaps;  To accompany scientifically the capacity development and knowledge transfer activities;  To develop gender‐sensitive extension methods and information material;  To establish collaborations with the national and local extension sector and policy makers  and increase their awareness and knowledge around nutrition‐sensitive agriculture, food  processing and balanced diets;  To establish a local policy dialog, including organization of stakeholder workshops and policy  round table discussions;  To support capacity building for partners and relevant stakeholders like local decision  makers, extension agents and farmers;  To coordinate the capacity building work package in the project;  To contribute to the other project work packages, project workshops and scientific  publications. 

  Education, qualifications and experience:  The candidate must have:             

A PhD degree in agriculture, agricultural economics, rural development, social sciences or related  disciplines;  Research  experience  in  agricultural  and  (rural)  development,  innovation  processes,  extension  systems and knowledge transfer;  Knowledge of food and nutrition security issues;  Knowledge of agriculture in the tropics, esp. multi‐storey cropping systems and horticulture;  Relevant publications in international peer‐reviewed journals;  Proven leadership and administrative skills, including excellent communication skills;  Interest and demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multi‐cultural environment;  Excellent proficiency in oral and written English (French an advantage);  Willingness to travel extensively;  Ability to work independently, efficiently and target oriented.
