1. RATIONALE AND BACKGROUND The Search for SEAMEO Young Scientists (SSYS) is a gathering of young scientists all over Southeast Asia as a venue for sharing and dissemination of information on their scientific and mathematical research projects. SSYS was initiated in 1997, since then, it has been held once in every two years with a specific theme. SSYS aims to encourage young learners to apply scientific and mathematical knowledge into technological problem-solving activities to address sustainability. It aims to increase awareness of young learners about the relationship between science, mathematics, technology, environment, economy and society. SSYS aims to foster camaraderie and networking among these young learners through science and mathematics congresses, exhibitions and competitions. Moreover, SSYS is a platform that provides opportunities to enhance the vast potentials of youth through intellectual activity in conceptualising ideas, and through cooperative teamwork in organising those ideas into more tangible investigative research projects that benefit the society. In today’s competitive and fast-changing world, the demand for creative ability is more pressing than ever to support new innovation and technology development in diverse environments. Meeting that demand naturally open opportunities to fill the gaps and hence, increasing chances to secure jobs and livelihoods. The sustainable development goals aim to transform the world to end all forms of adversities such as poverty, inequalities, climate changes and many others. This universal agenda is huge but everyone particularly, the youths can contribute through their local actions in solving these adversities. The present generation of youth should develop valuable life skills and apply their creativity in facing challenges in life. In pursue of this vital mission, there should be an awareness among youth where development is sustainable, inclusive for all and impartial towards any bias gain. In view of this, SSYS serves as a platform for youth to analyse current problems encountered and investigate potential solutions to the problems. The process of investigation would be able to lead youth to develop and exercise their ideas and creative problem solving skills in daily lives. At RECSAM, we believe that education is essential not only in attaining but also in harmonising sustainable development goals. The youth of today, regarded as the hope of the future, should play a key role to achieve these goals with their creativity in solving all forms of global adversities. Hence, the Centre welcomes submission of science and mathematics projects that showcase ideas and innovations within the context of sustainable development goals. 2. OBJECTIVES The SSYS is envisioned as a worthy intellectual venture and an effective medium to promote lifelong scientific and mathematical values, interests, skills, attitudes and motivation among the youth. It is hoped that through the SSYS, there will be an increase in societal well-being 3

through quality science and mathematics education interspersed with technology, environmental, economic and societal awareness. Specifically, SSYS aims to: 2.1 Encourage research and development in science and mathematics among young learners in Southeast Asia and other countries; 2.2 Provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences among students in Southeast Asia and other countries; 2.3 Provide a venue for intellectual and social interactions among students and educators; and 2.4 Identify and give recognition to outstanding young science and mathematics researchers. 3. THEME SSYS 2018 adopts the theme Youth Creativity for Harmonising Sustainable Development Goals. All projects submitted should adhere to the congress theme. Research projects that do not match the theme will be disqualified. 4. PARTICIPATION The 11th Regional Congress will be conducted in a friendly atmosphere and participants will have an opportunity to socialise and meet other young scientists with common interests from SEAMEO Member Countries and Associate Member Countries. 4.1 Participation is open to all secondary students (excluding pre-university and matriculation levels) from public and private schools recognised by Ministry of Education of the respective countries; 4.2 Students may work on the project alone or in a team (maximum up to 4 students) and must be guided by at least 1 registered teacher advisor; 4.3 Each student is only allowed to be registered under one project only; 4.4 Should the number of team members exceed 4, only the first 4 registered names will be considered for prizes and certificates; 4.5 Prizes and certificates will be given only to registered students, teachers and/or officials in the participating team; 4.6 Parents and observers accompanying the students are welcome on a fee-paying basis. Please enquire for further information. 4.7 All participating students, teachers and/or officials must fill in SSYS Form 1, SSYS Form 2 and SSYS Form 3 while parents and observers must fill-in SSYS Form 4 and submit to the organiser by 5 September 2017 (Tuesday). 4.8 By submitting an entry, the entrant grants SEAMEO RECSAM the permission to use the information/ project work submitted including images and other forms of media for any, scholarly and publicity purposes, as deemed appropriate by SEAMEO RECSAM. 5. GENERAL GUIDELINES The students are required to present their research project orally to the judges, observers, other students and general audience in a lecture setting. They are also required to showcase 4

their research project through exhibition. Each research project will be judged based on the quality of the written report, oral presentation and research project exhibition. 5.1 Research Project  The research should be in English language.  The areas of research should be related to the application and the integration of knowledge in Basic Sciences (Biology / Chemistry / Physics / General) and Mathematics with Technology, Environment or Health, which aims at Youth Creativity for Harmonising Sustainable Development Goals.  Collaboration with lecturers, academics or scientists is encouraged. However, the scope of involvement of the collaborators should be clearly defined and described. (*Note: The sophistication of research methods and data analysis should be within the grasp of the students’ scope of learning to avoid disqualification).  Students must do all the work. Teachers and collaborators may help in planning and advising, but may not actually design, conduct or build the project. Abuses of this rule may result in disqualification.  All students are expected to be able to answer to questions regarding the research and development of every phase of their projects. Every portion of the abstract and research paper must be the original work of the students.  The written report must specifically delineate the work done by the student(s) on the project.  All research projects should be focused on the given theme; be an original work; be a result of a current continuing or parallel scientific research and investigation and NOT a duplication of any previous research; demonstrate and apply scientific and mathematics principles or attempt to provide new concepts in the process of designing technological activities or creating technological inventions to meet the needs of societal development; have relevance or contribute to the livelihood development of society or community and environment, in meeting human needs and/or promoting the socio-economic growth of the society; and the community in particular; reflect the needs of the community and how it can be sustained; and be cost-efficient, environment-friendly and feasible.  (*Note: Participants are required to declare the originality of the work on a card duly signed by all during judging process).

5.2 Project Proposal All students must submit a project proposal together with SSYS Form 1, SSYS Form 2 and SSYS Form 3. Project proposal needs to be written according to the project proposal format provided in Appendix 5. Submission can be made via email or post. Kindly ensure acknowledgement of receipt upon submission. Documents should reach the organiser by 5 September 2017 (Tuesday). 5.3 Full Report

5

 All students of successful entries are required to submit full report of their research project, bound and in soft copy, formatted in MS Word and addressed to the organiser on or before 4 December 2017 (Monday).  At least 4 hard copies of the reports need to be prepared for distribution during the congress.  The soft copies may be sent to the secretariat through this email address: [email protected] or [email protected]. Please make sure you receive an acknowledgement of receipt from the organiser.  The format of the full report should strictly follow the sequence as shown in Appendix 6. 5.4 Congress (Oral Presentation) The Science and Mathematics congress is a venue where the student researchers will present their projects to the members of the panel of judges and the public. The venue of both Science and Mathematics congresses would be different accordingly.  Any student from the research project team may present. Multiple presenters are allowed as long as the presenters belong to the same team;  Teachers are not allowed to assist the students in any way during the presentation;  Presentation should be done using computer, LCD projector and MS PowerPoint (or related) software. All presentation files will be collected from the delegates prior to the event.  The order of presentation for each project will be determined by drawing lots. The drawing will be done prior to the event and the sequence will be posted on the SSYS official website.  Presentation should only be approximately 10 minutes for each project. Should the presentation end before the time, the presenter should announce “end of presentation”. To remind the presenter of the time remaining, a notice board with the message “two minutes” will be showed. At the end of two minutes, a “thank you” notice will signal the end of the presentation.  Immediately after the presentation, a question and answer session by members of the floor will follow (within the time limit provided). 5.5 Research Project Exhibition All projects will be displayed in an exhibition hall for public viewing.
