The Course History of Economic Thought – Introduction

What this course is not • A theory course • A catalog of names and dates • A debate (some questions have no easy  answers!) !) • A forum for discussing how you feel about the  world • A survey of moral issues or right/wrong

Historical Background • All economic theory arose in an historical  context – usually answers some relevant  question at the time – Keynes would have been far less interesting in  1926 than in 1936

• Social and political environment is important • How much development of theory is in  response to environment versus a part of the  ongoing search for knowledge?

• Evolution of Western economic thought,  mostly from 1500 onwards – More emphasis on modern theory than is typical

• Study Study development of theory, in addition to  development of theory in addition to context in which theory arose

How is this course different? • Readings are important (particularly source  readings) • Class discussion is important • More critical • No problem sets • Exams: take‐home, essay format • No fixed curve • You will not agree with everything that is said (I  certainly don’t)

Major Tenets of School • Class is roughly sorted into schools of  economic thought • Sometimes necessary to make broad  generalizations even if every member of the generalizations, even if every member of the  school does not agree completely

Whom did school benefit or seek to  benefit? • To be popularized, a system of ideas must fit  the needs of some element of society • Often left wing vs. right wing

Which tenets of the school became  lasting contributions? • What parts of the theory have become  accepted in mainstream economics?

How was the school valid, useful or  correct in its time? • Avoid being judgmental about mistakes made  by earlier thinkers – Concepts relevant in the past may not be relevant  today but are still useful to study in context today, but are still useful to study in context – Concepts that are widely applicable today are  often irrelevant to past times

Who cares? • Understanding the development of theory  enhances understanding of contemporary economic theory – Understanding mistakes is useful! Understanding mistakes is useful!

• Good check on irresponsible generalizations • Perspective on and understanding of the past • What questions are still open?
