LaSalle, Room 2206, Barron, WI 54812 Co-Superintendents Show Begins at 8:45 am on Friday All first-year dairy exhibitors are invited to participate in a first-year exhibitor class. Each participant in this class will receive a leather show halter. No premiums will be paid for this class. The first-year exhibitor class will be held at 8:45 am on Friday in the dairy show ring. This class is open to all dairy breeds. Pre-registration is not required. No animal can be brought to the fair unless they are registered in a class. ATTENTION DAIRY EXHIBITORS – By action of the Barron County Fair Board, all marketable milk obtained from cows milked in the milking parlor must be placed in the bulk tank. All milk placed into the tank must be free of drug residues and meet the requirements of saleable milk as set forth by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection. An exhibitor must use their own milking equipment, outside the parlor, if they wish to take the milk home. Milking Times are: Thursday – 3:00 to 9:30 pm; Friday & Saturday – 6:00 to 9:00 am and 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and 3:00 to 9:00 pm; Sunday – 6:00 to 9:00 am and 3:00 to 6:00 pm.

DAIRY DIVISIONS FOR ALL BREEDS A maximum of 6 dairy animals may be exhibited by any exhibitor. (Be sure to use the correct letter for your breed.) Division A – Registered Holstein Division B – Grade Holstein Division C – Guernsey Division D – Jersey Division E –Brown Swiss Division F –Milking Shorthorn Division G –Ayrshire Division H – Any Other Breed Including Crossbred THE REGISTERED AND GRADE HOLSTEIN DIVISIONS WILL BE ALTERNATED DURING THE DAIRY SHOW. REGISTERED DAIRY CATTLE ONLY Junior dairy cattle (all breeds) must be registered with their respective breed association to be eligible to show. Further, junior dairy animals must meet national show (respective breed) eligibility requirements. To clarify the above rule – the grading-up process or registry status or degree of purity must be such that the animal is eligible to show at the breed’s respective national show.

Sale. Youth wishing to enter animals into the “Miss Q” Contest must follow all guidelines and rules as set forth by the Barron County Junior Livestock Show & Sale Committee to be eligible to sell a quart of milk in the Livestock Sale.

OUTSTANDING DAIRY EXHIBITOR AWARD Two Awards – One Junior & One Senior These awards will be presented to an outstanding junior and senior dairy exhibitor who has developed a high degree of skill and knowledge over the years. Junior Award – those individuals, ages 9-13, as of January 1, sponsored by Dennis Hellendrung Senior Award – those individuals, ages 14-19, as of January 1, sponsored by Foremost Farms, USA Nomination forms can be obtained on June 1st and must be submitted at the Barron County Extension Office on July 1st.

DIVISION I: CLUB HERD

BRED AND OWNED CLASS The highest placing bred and owned animal will be recognized in each dairy division. Registration/ID papers must list the exhibitor as the owner/breeder and the papers must be at ringside to be eligible. GROUP CLASSES Produce of Dam, Club Herd, Daughter/Dam and Dairy Showmanship - Any animal used in these classes must have been shown in its rightful class in the Junior Show. No outside animals may be used in these classes. In the Daughter/Dam class, offspring must be of junior calf age or older. Produce of Dam shall consist of two female animals of any age. They must be the offspring of one cow. Proof of relationship must be furnished. Miss Q Contest Youth exhibiting dairy cows at the Barron County Fair have the opportunity to participate in the “Miss Q” milk quality contest. The “Miss Q Contest” recognizes dairy exhibitors who exhibit cows that produce high quality milk. This contest is a cooperative effort of the 4-H Dairy Committee, the Barron County Junior Livestock Show & Sale Committees and Barron/Washburn DHIC. Eligible animals must be exhibited in the Dairy Show at the Barron County Fair and must have milk quality records processed by a Dairy Herd Improvement program. “Miss Q“ classes are based upon the cow’s number of lactations. The classes are: Lactation 1, Lactation 2, Lactation 3, and Lactation 4 or greater. The animal in each class with the lowest lactation Average Linear Score will be declared the winner. If a lactation class has no entries, there will be no winner for that class. The winner of each lactation class will be allowed to sell a quart of milk in the Barron County Junior Livestock

A Club Herd shall consist of five animals from one club. These animals may be any age, but must have been shown in the Junior Department divisions this year. Any combination of breeds may be used for the Club Herd entry. One herd per club any breed or combination of breeds. (Registered and grade animals may show together.) 1. One herd per club, any breed or a combination of breeds. STALL SPACE Approximate stall space per animal: (space depends on total animals entered) Fall heifer calves – 4 ft. per animal same as yearling); Per calf – 2½ ft.; Per cow – 5½ ft. HERDSMANSHIP Awards will be presented on Sunday at noon during the Dairy Awards Program. Need not make advanced entry. This award shall act as an incentive to exhibitors to do an excellent job in caring for their animals and preparing their exhibit. Floor displays are not allowed. Judging will be done by a committee of judges during the following times: Thursday – 6:00 to 9:00 pm; Friday – 3:00 to 9:00 pm; Saturday – 1:00 to 9:00 pm. Herdsmanship will be judged and placings given for 1st through 6th place. There will be small, medium and large herd divisions. The size category will be determined after club herds are in place by using an average. Club dairy leaders must report the number of animals in their display by 4 p.m. on Thursday to Steve Fronk. If the dairy leader has not reported by the deadline, their club will be disqualified from the herdsmanship competition. A penalty will be assessed for exhibiting fewer animals than were entered. First place herdsmanship winner in each category will have first choice of location in the dairy barns the following year. No advance registration need be made. No state aid on Herdsmanship. A cash award will be presented through the sponsorship of the Rice Lake Holstein Club in memory of Don Sheldon, long time Holstein Breeder and fair supporter. DAIRY PROMOTION The Barron County Dairy Promoters will award $25 in dairy promotion materials to the top club in both the large, medium, and small category which does the best job of promoting dairy products through their club display.

1. Preparation of Exhibit A. Adequate bedding; front packed higher than rear, straw or bedding clean and bright (Straw pack should not be over 8 inches) B. Decorations neat and attractive, not gaudy or overdone C. Appropriate signs for each animal, complete information. D. Appropriate color scheme, background tack, originality, tack, show boxes. E. Educational display using fair theme. 2. Appearance and Attitude of Exhibitors A. Knowledgeable, courteous, friendly; able to answer questions about the exhibit and/or cattle. B. Clothes and person neat and clean; dressed appropriately. You are encouraged to make comments. 3. Care of Exhibit A. Cattle clean, wellgroomed, neat and attractive, no flies. B. Aisle clean and neat, adequate width for visitors. C. Bedding clean and dry, shows evidence of frequent reworking rear, edge neat and clean. D. Feed and equipment stored neatly (out of sight), if possible. (exception feeding time)

A trophy, provided by the family of Steven Lloyd, given in his memory, for his active years as a 4-H dairy member in the My-T-Fine 4-H Club, will be given to the top overall Dairy Showman. The top showman of each age class will be eligible to compete. Awards will be presented on Friday, during the Dairy Show ROY RIEBE SR. BEST UDDER COW AWARD An award will be presented for the Best Uddered cow in each registered cattle breed in honor of Roy Riebe, Sr., an outstanding Barron County Registered Jersey Breeder Award will be presented on Friday, during the Dairy Show PHIL and AUDREY HELLENDRUNG AWARD The Phil and Audrey Hellendrung award will be awarded to the exhibitor of the Grand Champion Registered Guernsey Female in the Junior Show. The award is a tribute to Phil and Audrey Hellendrung for their many years of involvement in the dairy industry, 4H and their dedication to building a registered Guernsey herd. The award is sponsored by the Hellendrung children. Best Bred and Owned Ribbons will be presented on Friday during the Dairy Show Sponsored by Tom & Lana Hellendrung Phil-Aud Guernseys Champion Junior Bred & Owned Registered Holstein Award will be presented on Friday during the Dairy Show Sponsored by Glen & Sue Wohlk and Family Bow-Valley Holsteins.

AMY OLSON MEMORIAL AWARD Award will be presented on Friday during the Dairy Show This award will be given to the exhibitor of the Junior Champion Registered Guernsey Female in the Junior Show. The award is given in memory of Amy Olson, a devoted exhibitor of registered Guernsey cattle at the Barron County Fair and the Wisconsin Junior State Fair. LITTLE BRITCHES SHOW – Show to be held at 12:00 noon, Sunday Little britches shall be divided into two age groups; 7-8 and 6 and under. All youth must control calf under their own power. No sandals are permitted in the show ring. White pants are suggested, but jeans are acceptable. Intermediate calf and younger can be shown. Prizes are compliments of area sponsors. Outstanding Dairy Exhibitor Award presented on Sunday at Dairy Awards Program ANIMAL PHOTOGRAPHY DIVISION K: Grades 3-5 DIVISION L: Grades 6-8 DIVISION M: Grades 9-13 All entries will be conference judged on Tuesday by the Vet Science Area Judge in the Youth Expo Building between 1 and 6 pm and displayed in the Youth Expo Building. Large Animals • Open to anyone enrolled in the dairy project. • All pictures must contain dairy animal(s) and livestock related scenes. • All pictures may have a caption and each entry may have a title. • Pictures may be black and white or color and secured on a 11”x14” white tag board or poster board. • Entries will be judged on the basis of technical quality, composition and story telling ability of the picture. • Entry tag to be completely filled out and mounted on upper right corner of tag board or poster board. CLASS NUMBER 1. 2.

Single photo – any size up through 8”x10”. Four pictures related to project, no larger than 4”x6”.

EDUCATIONAL DISPLAYS Posters must be no smaller than 11”x14” and no larger than 22”x22” in size. Tag board or poster board is to be used for mounting posters. Youth will be required to bring their poster to the Youth Expo Building on Tuesday for conference judging by the Vet Science Area Judge between 1 and 6 pm. Posters will be placed on display in the Youth Expo Building. CLASS NUMBER 3. Poster summarizing a nutritionally balanced ration that you have determined is suited for the animal. 4. Poster which explains health and sanitation principles important in health care. 5. Poster describing a favorite breed. Include information on color, uses, bloodlines, history, popularity, whatever can be found. 6. Poster of any of the following topics: care, training, health, nutrition, psychology, breed, history of breeds, colors and markings, anatomy, careers, safety, reproduction, youth leadership in the project. 7. Any other poster related to the project (this may include a caption photo story of an animal you have raised-minimum of 3 pictures and 1 paragraph about project work.)
