Michael ‘Mike’ Barkley The Jack Ball Lifetime Achievement award is presented to an individual in recognition of outstanding contribution through lifelong dedication to the upliftment, growth and dynamic of the Orthotics and Prosthetics Profession and its patrons. This year it is our privilege and honour to present the award to a man who has been instrumental in shaping the industry into what it is today. Congratulations to Mr. Michael Barkley. Mike’s first awareness of Orthotics and Prosthetics was as a young boy after attending a clinic at the then Somerset Hospital Orthopaedics department with his grandfather who was to be fitted with a leather wrist splint. Soon after the Red Cross presented a talk at Observatory Boys School where Mike attended. It was then when he made the decision to take up the calling. He completed his formal training in the Cape and was very active in the establishment of rehabilitation clinics in the Northern Namibian region of Osha Kati. Mike then opened George Orthopaedic centre in 1983, which later became Barkley Oates Inc, which served and still serves as a solid platform from which to influence and develop the profession on a multifaceted level. This includes: service provision to government clinics throughout the Southern Cape Region, development and application of rehabilitation principles, attending numerous local and international congresses, actively and freely sharing newfound methods, information and techniques with colleagues making their facilities available to any and all, offering training workshops where the Ischial Containment Socket and Total Surface Bearing Transtibial sockets were first introduced. Mike has been instrumental in the study of the history and development of lower limb prosthetic socket design and has hosted many International Prosthetic and rehabilitation experts, bringing their international knowledge and experience to local soil providing an opportunity to colleagues, peers and students for global exposure. The likes of which include: Marlo Ortiz, Christopher Hoyt, and Robert Gailey. Mike has also been actively involved in O&P Training and education. From student development at Pretoria Technikon, now Tshwane University of Technology, and the individual training of the many students that have completed their practical sections at Barkley Oates Inc. All of which has, expanded the reach of his passion, exponentially. Mike completed his BTech degree at TUT Cum Laude and continues to encourage all his colleagues to pursue personal growth through continued expansion of knowledge and further qualification. Mike has been a distinguished member of many O&P associations in South Africa from AOPPP through to SAOPA. He has served on the Executive Committee since the inception of SAOPA in 1999 with the highest degree of integrity and compassion to the industry. The founding of ISPO South Africa can be attributed in its entirety to the tireless efforts Mike put into the endeavour. After years of hard work and sacrifice it has led to the first ISPO International Congress on African soil to be hosted in Cape Town next year, making Mike’s circle about to come to a full turn. Recently Mike introduced the international initiative ISPOWER in South Africa, an extensive platform for sharing any and all information pertaining to Orthotics and Prosthetics. Through his dedication, our profession has gained global recognition and we can associate with and stand proudly amongst our international colleagues. Mike’s greatest joy and gratification is derived from providing unparalleled services to the countless paediatric prosthetic patients. His team provides services in the Southern Cape state clinics, giving hope and a fighting chance to those children that need it most. This award further acknowledges the ethical, evidence based academic and clinical orthotics and prosthetics practice example and precedence Mike has set, and continues to live by. He continues to be a role model that all of us can aspire to be. Outside of the profession Mike is a devout Christian, loving husband; father; and grandfather, a stern supporter of South African Cricket and Western Province rugby, A national Judo champion (to the detriment of any misbehaving students that have experienced the Nikki-te’-jimmy move), and once a year dons his dreadlocks and assumes his Rastafarian side for Casual day. Mr. Barkley please accept our most sincere gratitude for years of guidance leadership, dedication, and passion and a humble thank you for unconditionally sharing your talents with us Your peers salute you!
