Emergency Called Meeting
January 13, 2017
The Harnett County Board of Education met in open session in the Board Room of the Lillington Education Complex on January 13, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. The following members were present: Bill Morris, Chairman; Eddie Jaggers, Vice-Chairman; Vivian Bennett, Roger Farina, and Jason Lemons. Others present: Stan Williams, Superintendent; Charles Bullock, Board Attorney; Brookie Ferguson, Dr. Nancy Holmes, Vera Jones, Brooks Matthews, Monica Thompson; Assistant Superintendents; Terry Byrd, Recording Secretary, and Patricia Harmon-Lewis. Chairman Morris called the meeting to order. Closed Session On a motion by Mr. Lemons, seconded by Vice-Chairman Jaggers, the Board unanimously approved a motion to convene into closed session pursuant to N.C. General Statute 143-318.11(a)(1) to consult with attorney to preserve attorney-client privilege. Board members moved to the Board Conference Room. Return to Open Session Invocation Chairman Morris called on Mrs. Bennett to offer the invocation. Approval of Agenda Chairman Morris asked for amendments to the Agenda. There being none, Mr. Farina made a motion to approve the Agenda. Mr. Lemons seconded the motion and it carried unanimously. Action Item A.
Personnel
As approved by the Board at the January 10, 2017 board meeting, Mr. Bullock prepared a contract modification to Superintendent Stan Williams’ contract providing a contract buyout allowing Superintendent Williams to retire effective February 1, 2017. Superintendent Williams and his counsel were provided an opportunity to review said document and are satisfied with the contract modification. Chairman Morris made a motion that the Board authorize the execution of Superintendent Stan Williams’ contract modification. Vice-Chairman Jaggers seconded the motion and the Board voted 4 to 1 to approve. Yea: Chairman Morris, Vice-Chairman Jaggers, Mr. Farina, and Mr. Lemons Nay: Mrs. Bennett Mr. Bullock stated he would contact the North Carolina School Boards Association to begin the process of a superintendent search. Next Scheduled Special/Work Session Mr. Farina made a motion to move the January 19, 2017 Special/Work Session morning meeting to January 23, 2017 as an evening meeting. Vice-Chairman Jaggers seconded the motion
and discussion followed. Mr. Farina amended his motion to state moving the January 19, 2017 Special/Work Session meeting to January 25, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Vice-Chairman Jaggers seconded the amended motion and the Board voted unanimously to approve. Comments Mr. Farina thanked Deputy Daggett and the Harnett County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance with a situation that occurred the evening of January 12, 2017 at Highland Middle School. Mr. Lemons thanked Superintendent Williams for his years of service and dedication. Adjourn On a motion by Vice-Chairman Jaggers, seconded by Mr. Lemons, the Board voted unanimously to adjourn.
