PR E SI D E N T’ S L E TTE R My How Time Flies When You Are Having Fun! It seems like this past year has flown by. It started with a wonderful trip to Steamboat Springs, CO with beautiful mountains, and cool dry weather. I think it was 100 degrees when I left Little Rock. Next was the FDA fishing trip to Eagle Nest. Thanks to Bob Prough and Ray Rhoades, Cheryl and I, and our four sons were able to attend. Cheryl caught a 42” Pike! Our Next board meeting was in Fredericksburg, TX. It was really neat to taxi right up to the Hanger Hotel. The Snowmass ski trip was next, where I tried to keep up with Brandon, Jason, John, and Beau. I skiied 63 MPH without getting hurt, but was still in last place. We flew down to beautiful San Salvador Island in the Bahamas for the next meeting. Steve Mowery made this international, over water, trip go very smoothly because he led us through all the paper work and requirements for this flight. There are two more meetings, Bart’s meeting in Abilene, KS and the annual meeting at Williamsburg, VA, and then my term as your President will end. Being able to fly to these beautiful locations and having great continuing education while there is what makes the FDA so unique. What I enjoyed the most is spending time with you, my FDA extended family.

I guess every year has its own issues to deal with. This year was not any different. Some special people I want to thank for their work on the FDA’s behalf this past year are: • Stacy Hufziger: our Executive Director, she has taken so much stress away from us in scheduling meetings and contracts with hotels. • Ray Rhoades: The Grand Poobah, Mister FDA, for all his wisdom and guidance, and for the annual ski trip. • Mark Zust: for all the work on updating our By Laws, and getting the FDA’s issues with CERP resolved. • Bart Bycraft: outstanding outreach to our new members. (11 new members in the last 6 months) • Steve Mowery: Mister Enthusiasm, for the annual dive trip. Great communicator! • Mark Mosier: Excellent fall board meeting in Fredericksburg • Bob Prough: Outstanding annual meeting in Steamboat • John Shell: All his work on this year’s annual meeting in Williamsburg Also, all the officers, board members, and committee chairmen who make this organization run so smooth! Heck, all the President has to do is delegate. I want to encourage all our members to attend this year’s annual meeting as we honor Paul Hoffman, our FDA Hall of Fame Honoree! Please remember Wade Carnes in your prayers as he recovers from heart surgery. Thanks for allowing me to be your President this past year. It has truly been an honor! Give me a hug, hand shakes are for sissies. Andy

NAT I O NA L C O N V E N T I O N FDA NATIONAL CONVENTION (Con’t from p.4)

Hall of Fame Recipient and Convention Keynote Speaker, Dr. Paul Hoffman Curriculum vitae Education: Dr. Paul Hoffman jr. Is a 1961 graduate of Baltimore College of Dental Surgery and the University of Maryland Dental School, the oldest dental school in the world! Orthodontic training: Probably one of the few people to take 5 years to compete a 3 year Supervised Preceptorship Program, and not fail any exams given by the local Orthodontic Societies. The additional two years to complete the program was because I was a guest of the US Army Dental Corps at Leavenworth, the Fort, not the prison. The preceptorship was with my dad, who had received his orthodontic training 35 years earlier in a preceptorship program with Dr. Charles Hawley, of Hawley Retainer fame. FDA Experience: In the early days of the FDA it was said that if you stayed around long enough you would end up being VP, Convention Chairman, President, and later when no one else was available, a VP again. Yup, I did that, plus Web Master for 15 years and editor of Flight Watch for 6 years.

Personal and Family: Paul was born in Washington D.C. And now lives with his wife Bev in Green Valley Arizona. Paul has three boys: Christopher, Justin, and Kurt, and one granddaughter and one great grandson. Family data in aviation terms: TTAW : 46 Total Time married to All Wives TTMB : 25 Total Time married to Bev Airplanes I have owned and loved: Cessna 172 Cessna 210 Cessna 337 Piper J3 Cub Stemme Motor Glider Cessna 414 Beechraft King Air C90B Stearman Convention Address: “60 years of Flyin and 53 years of FDA n” This little talk will be a trip down memory lane with the FDA. We'll play the old TV game "Who Done It?" with door prizes for those who first recognize the person, location or other interesting FDA trivia. Besides covering some FDA trivia we will sail over such topics as: What was it like flying before the FAA existed? How does a dentist get the chance to fly across "The Pond"? How does one plan for a trip like that? If we have enough time I'll show a few photos of the Taj Mahal, and a trip to Mt. Everest.

FLYING OshKosh is just around the Corner Memorial Day has come and gone and summer officially has started. It will be OSH time again in the blink of an eye. What a group we have going. We have so many great activities in store for your flying pleasure! 1) The whole thing starts on Saturday 26th of July at Wausau Wisconsin (KAUW) where the red carpet will be rolled out. We will have a BBQ on the field in one of the nicest hangers this side of the Atlantic. After all the hanger flying and stories are told, you will be whisked away to Ned Markey’s Ski Resort: Rib Mountain call 715-848-2802 and tell them that you are an FDAer. $59/nite. What a deal!

If you want a car to explore on your own call Enterprise 715-848-8799 2) Sunday morning after briefing we all fly to Fond Du Lac (KFLD) and terrorize that fine airport waiting for our arrival to OSH. This year the FAA and EAA are trying out a new arrival procedure with our group. It is pretty exciting and they are anxious to see how it works. It is fun to be involved with these groups in a teamwork environment. All three of

catered hog roast complete with all the trimmings/beverages/desserts/ etc after a hard day of looking at more aviation candy than you can shake a stick at. To top off the evening, the Principles of the wildly popular ForeFlight aviation App will give us a private presentation. Cool Beans…NO? Please stay as long as you would like as each day there is something wonderful to see each day.

us are working together to brainstorm. Good stuff.

We have set the Registration Fee at $75/person to help defray the costs of transportation, tent rental, and catered hog roast. Sorry for being late with this but we had to know how many people were coming to see what it was going to take to cover expenses. With this said, please send Stacy a check or register online so we can cover financial obligations in a timely manner.

FLYING Eastern District Fly-In Stevensville, MD September 12-14, 2014

Well, the locust trees have bloomed and just like I said last winter, the crabs have started their migration backup the Chesapeake Bay. The bay has more creeks, coves, rivers and swamps than we’ve got names for, and each one is a habitat for these tasty feisty crustaceans. Williamsburg is located close to the bay on the James River and Kath and I are lookin’ forward to seein y’all for a good time and a

taste of colonial life on the bay at the upcoming annual meeting. Come September 12, we’ll be looking forward to hosting the FDA crab feast. Now I’m headed to the airport to get the plane ready for Williamsburg. See ya soon and fly safe, John & Kathy Veltman

Fall Board Meeting October 3-4, 2014 - Rough River, KY Dam State Park Mark your calendars for our meeting at Rough River State Park this coming October 3-4th. First of all, this place was made for a FDA meeting - Fly into 2I3 Rough River State Park Airport which is within walking distance of the lodge. So lots of tire kicking and flybys will be had this weekend. This is a paved 3200 ft strip that is also right next to the river.

For the new members, just so you know, “ the board meetings are not restricted to board members”. We just are required to have one in the fall each year and use it as an excuse to get together, besides taking care of some business. Stacy has put together a truly family-oriented weekend for everyone. We are planning nature hikes, with a local

guide, scavenger hunts, there will be mini golf and guided boat tours for the whole family. If that is not enough, you can also rent a boat of your own and try your hand at some great fishing or water skiing. Want more information contact: Kevin D’ Angelo or Stacy

FLYING San Juan Yachting Adventure September 19-26, 2014 My apologies for missing an article in a Newsletter or two; Life has been crazy here! Business has been good, and I cannot complain, but I honestly have not had time to pause, look up, and enjoy what is going on around me! Fly privately into KBLI (Bellingham) or commercially into KSEA (Seattle) or drive or take a train or a bus, or walk… Just get yourself and your family to the Bellingham, WA in time to depart on what will be one of the most memorable charters of your life! Night 1 – Friday, September 19th – Sailing School and Pre-Board – Bellingham, WA Night 2 – Saturday, September 20th - Arrive Spencer Spit State Park, Lopez Island Night 3 – Sunday, September 21st – Arrive Friday Harbor, San Juan Island Night 4 – Monday, September 22nd – Family Fun Day, San Juan Island

up in the off chance that all the balls are in use. Hopefully we can secure some dock space and at least have a Happy Hour with some appetizers as a group. As usual, we will plan on some CE time in the evening. There are two private grass strips on the island (for those of you who dream of soft and short bush flying, check out the short, one-directional, uphill, narrow strip on the north end of the island – you will hike right past it if you chose to hike to the light house). The other strip is part of an airpark and it is fun to hike around the dirt road that allows access to the member’s summer homes.

Night 5 –Tuesday, Sept. 23nd – Stuart Island, Prevost Harbor The earlier we depart Friday Harbor, the more time we will have in Prevost Harbor, MY favorite in all of the San Juan Islands. It is located on Stuart Island, which is mostly “off the grid” and has some of the best hiking, kayaking, whale watching, and dinghy shore searching around.

The hike to the Light House on the northern most tip of the island is well worth it. Oftentimes there are Orca a couple hundred yards out spy-hopping and breaching; Molly and I have gotten lucky seeing whales there in the past. The hike will take you past Reid Harbor (another good anchorage, but a bit less convenient with our route), the school where the students sell some local wares to help with funding, and the bush strip.

The harbor is well protected, there are plenty of mooring balls, a decent sized dock, and a solid bottom for anchoring

There isn’t a lot of beach combing here, but it is a great place to spend more time than we have!

On Saturday, May 10th, Steve and Brenda Mowery along with Dave and Amy Camp, sponsored a lunch fly-in for Iowa dentists that are pilots. A total of 20 persons flew to Washington, Iowa, for lunch. The selected destination was café dodici which is an exceptional restaurant owned by a cousin of Amy Camp. The Café Dodici has won many awards and has been featured on Iowa Public Television and Radio programs and in several newspaper articles.

Amy Camp & Brenda Mowery, (dressed as a bikini clad girl)

The weather was perfect with blue sky's, 71 degrees temperature and a 10 knot wind. New FDA members Kim and Joan Wass, Nick and Julie Smith and Dave Barns attend along with several long time FDA members and 4 prospective FDA members. Dave Barns, from Pella, Iowa, flew the aircraft that got the most attention--

Group at Cafe Dodici

his recently restored Piper J-3 Cub that was absolutely beautiful! He will have it at Oshkosh to be judged and everyone was sure it will be a major award winner. This “Saturday-ForLunch Fly-In”, could be a great format to use in other states to recruit new members and get existing members more active in future FDA events. Iowa FDA members were asked to supply the names and email addresses of any dentists they know of in Iowa that are pilots and then they were e-mailed a promotional message with an RSVP

phone number. The flyin location was a relatively short flight for everyone and took just a few hours out of their busy day. The planning was minimal and only required making arrangements at an outstanding restaurant and arranging for transportation from the airport. Everybody had a great time and plan to do it again! Other FDA Members attending included Gordon & Lisa Peterson, Steve Bradley and Merrit & Connie Jones.

FDA Giving Back The following is a quick list of opportunities for FDA members to share our gifts. This is not all encompassing, but a short list for reference purposes. Hopefully, this will spark some interest in volunteerism.

1) DDS - Doctor Donated Services - great way to give back and not have to go anywhere,. http://dentallifeline.org/ our-volunteers/volunteer-now/ 2) Catholic Charities- in many large metro areas, they run a similar program as DDS and refer needy patients to your practice. Same thing with other faith based organizations. Some have funds to reimburse for lab fees. 3) If you have a Dental School near your residence, they usually have a charity program that could use your help in supervising the students.

7) RAM- Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps- Kind of like the father of charity clinics- most are in Appalachia, especially in Tennessee where their headquarters are but have them all over the world. Lodging near the clinics and food are usually provided by the local promoters. Clinics usually are Saturday day so you don't have to take off work. AS most of you know this is one of my favorites. More of a down home style clinic with volunteers from all walks of life and really get the flavor of a grass roots efforts. It also appeals to the pilot in us with RAM's founders love of aviation. The only caveat is because it is not run by Dentists, it is a little less organized than the MOM's but to me that is a plus as it is less stuffy and more relaxed. contact http://www.ramusa.org/

4) Angel flight, Air Care Alliance-click this link for a list of organizations to volunteer your pilot services to transport needy patients form point A to B. Usually no commitment until you have the time and can pick flights to meet your ability. www.aircarealliance.org/directory-groups. ( I recommend staying away from Angel Flight North East which is run by a shady character. PALS (http:// www.palservices.org/) would be the one for those in New England. The other Angel flights are great,)

8) Dominican Republic with me in March or with the FDA Dental Van any time of the year as discussed in previous articles- I will revisit it when we have it down there. Contact me.

5) Young Eagles- giving first flights to young kids which also enables the kids to get free online flight training through Sportys. Either contact your local EAA or log on to www.youngeagles.org

10) Many third world clinics are run or joined by our members. If you come across a mission project, send the information to Stacy and she can put it in the Newsletter, with the hope that other FDA members will participate.

6) MOM - Missions of Mercy These are charity clinics put on by the State Dental Society periodically. I know NYS is hosting there first one this month. They are very efficiently run clinic with usually up to 100 dental chairs set up in a large auditorium at a college or school like facility. Check with your state dental society or search google for the area of interest as there is not just one site to find the clinics. Be careful as most do not allow out of state dentists to volunteer.

9) There are many global organizations to join up with that are too numerous to list here, like CMDA www.cmda.org which sometimes have certain restrictions like alcohol use and religious affiliations.

F L Y I N G SAF E This month’s safety article comes from a member of the FDA Safety Team. Thought provoking and informative. Thank you Jan Bublik.

Precautionary Landing I was flying my 182Q with TCM O-470U one evening from KAUW -Wausau Downtown airport to our weekend vacation spot in Door County. 104 NM as the crow flies, with favorable tailwind about 40 minutes trip. Plane was just out of annual with clean bill of health. My precious cargo was snoozing in the back as I leveled at 5000 ft, in and out of IMC on this smooth early May evening. Airmet Zulu was issued, so I was very closely watching my OAT hovering around 0 dC, as well as my carb heat gauge and MP. Liquid precip trickled away from the corners of the windshield, no ice was forming, so I parked the plane and started to play with mixture trying the challenging task - Lean of Peak in carbureted 182. WOT minus a spit, just enough to cause turbulence at the Venturi, RPM dialed around 2100 I had partially opened carb heat to get around 15 dF on the gauge. Twist the mixture back, EGT rise with CHT, keep twisting and cylinder # 2 starts climbing to 360s, I keep coming back, first drop on #2, then #5, into 360, I keep coming back, no drop. What?, keep leaning and no effect. CHT 372, 373,374, quite a lean mixture, occasional cough, couldn't pass for roughness though. Something is not right. The cylinder temp should be going down and I should feel more roughness. I know it is only one cylinder up in the 380s and factory installed CHT temp is well on the left side... but... You know the feeling...something is just not right! I was over the state forest with no flat piece of land around me. Dialed on my Garmin nearest airport and a second later turn 15 degrees right towards Green Bay. Didn't plan on landing at that point, my intent was to just get closer to airports and fields. By then VMC prevailed. I told the ATC I I will continue towards Green Bay VOR. Throttle back and now it is a rough ride, carb heat - took care of most of it. Aha, carburetor icing, so I push the mixture full rich, looking at engine monitor, waiting for CHT to drop, no effect. I know the temperature dynamics of my cylinders and

this is not what I remember. Ok, carb ice wasn’t the only thing. Something is definitely not right, I try to push it even further( duh, through the wall?)CHT at 380 on #5... . I am not going to fly over 20 miles stretch of Green Bay with uncertainty like that: "..kids we're landing at this airport, I want to see it what's down there - ok dad..." . Cancel IFR told ATC I want to stay on the frequency with them but will perform precautionary landing Shawno. On final engine was running quite rough. I land and taxi to FBO, trying to cut the engine out, the damn mixture control knob came out with the wire, stayed in my hand and engine keeps running. I see, so that's what was wrong! Apparently there is no safety spring in case of cable malfunction to keep the mixture full rich. If I didn't try to fly LOP and if I wasn't watching closely the cylinder temp, I wouldn't have known that anything was wrong. Level flight, everything seemed to be fine, all the instruments installed by Cessna were showing perfectly normal operation. The only indication that something wasn't right was a slow creep of CHT on cylinder number 5. A couple of things I learned on that night flight. You have to be open to the fact that you may not land at your destination. We all talk about normal flights and emergencies, but precautionary landing is an option too. You must have a good understanding of engine controls and their effect on your engine instruments. You need to understand the effects of changing mixture, RPM or adding carb heat and know the results which you are about to get. It is important to have a good engine monitor even on your C-150. But more important is to understand how to interpret the data you're reading on your engine monitor. Take the time to learn about it from a good source. I took an online version off the advanced pilot seminars from Oklahoma from advanced tele-seminar facility. This was probably the best spent $400 and might have very well saved my life. There is plenty of great reading on avweb- I like the articles from Pelican's Perch, written by John Deakin, who is involved with the advanced pilot seminars series. Don't sit fat dumb and happy, perform, expect, evaluate. Be safe. Jan Bublik
