FOCAL THEME

“Climate Change and its Impact on Water Resources of Kerala” The focal theme of 28 Kerala Science Congress will be Climate Change and its Impact on Water Resources of Kerala. Climate change has a multitude of immediate and long-term impacts on water resources, such as flooding, drought, rise in tidal regime in estuaries, drying up of rivers, water quality of surface and groundwater systems, precipitation and changes in water vapour pattern. These impacts when compounded together can have devastating effects on ecosystems and communities, ranging from economic and social to health and food insecurity. Coping, adapting and building capacities for resilience towards the ill effects of climate change on water resources requires a holistic approach. Solutions pivot on taking urgent action based on available scientific and technological knowledge. The selection of Climate Change and its Impact on Water Resources of Kerala as the special theme therefore, is to enable the use of the available knowledge base on the subject for its societal application. The Science Congress will discuss various challenges that need to be faced. Research and Development Institutions working in this sector will be contributing to the session and help in developing a sustainable plan for the State to face the above mentioned challenges. th
