CBE Budget Update The Alberta Government released its 2011 Budget on February 24. That budget purports to increase funding for education but that is not the reality for the CBE. Despite appearances, the provincial budget has an approximate negative impact of $60 million on the CBE and the education it delivers. When approximately three-quarters of the current CBE budget is salaries and benefits, a six per cent reduction is certain to affect students and jobs. At a meeting of the CBE's leadership team (including all school Principals) on March 2, CBE leaders discussed what the impact of the budget could be and explored possible solutions to minimize the impact on students. The CBE remains committed to supporting each student, every day - no exceptions. That commitment will guide the CBE through the ongoing budget process. In addition, the feedback gathered from stakeholders on the recent budget survey will be helpful in determining how the CBE operating budget should be spent. The survey was open from Feb. 16 to 27 and there were 1,455 responses: 923 (64 per cent) were parents, students or "Calgarians with an interest in public education"; 532 were CBE employees.
