Heating Curve Laboratory Purpose: To learn about kinetic and potential energy (in form of heat) changes using a heating curve. Pre-lab: Hypothesis: Predict what the “heating curve” of water will look like as we add constant heat to the water over time.

T [oC]

time

Materials: Beaker Ice Calculator

Hot plate Tongs Thermometer

Wire Gauze Temperature Probe (if available)

Procedure: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Obtain and wear goggles. Collect the materials listed above. Turn on the hot plate and be aware at all times that it is turned on. Place the thermometer into the drilled hole in the ice beaker. Wait two minutes and then record the reading on the thermometer. Immediately place the beaker on the hot plate and record the temperature every 0.5 minutes. When the readings level off, take 6 readings at one temperature. Clean your area up. Turn off the heat and carefully remove the beaker.

Chemistry 12 Discussion:

1. Recall the different states of matter (solid, liquid, gas). How do the water molecules differ in the liquid and gas states? Explain or draw.

2. Plot your data below as Temperature –vs– Time. Heating Curve for Water

a. Label the phase changes on your heating curve above. b. What happens to the molecules as they begin to boil?

c. Did you stop adding heat at any point during the lab? As heat was added what happened to the energy of the system?

Chemistry 12

d. If you were always adding heat, then why did the temperature trend change?

3. What happens to the energy being absorbed from the heat source? Use the heating curve and your knowledge of atoms to explain.

4. Calculate the heat change during the time interval where there was a continuous increase in temperature (warming up liquid water).

Conclusion: Provide a detailed conclusion for this laboratory. Including:  

Did you accomplish your purpose? Do you accept or reject your hypothesis?

 

List two sources of error. List two ways to improve the lab.

Post-Lab: 1. How much heat is needed to vaporize 250 g of water at 100oC?

2. When a quantity of water at 100oC is condensed to the liquid phase, 1.81 x 105 J of heat is released. What mass of water is condensed?
