Voice of the Students: Sixth grade perspectives By Brooke Toole and Leah Plummer When entering middle school things can be tough. We wanted to know how our new 6th graders feel about having older kids in the school with them and how they're adjustment is going. 6th graders, Emily Rock and Tyler Neal, from Stevens Brook Elementary, currently on Team Cadillac spoke to us about a few things they thought about the new environment and their new schedules. Both Tyler and Emily play a fall sport and have pretty full schedules since they are juggling school work, a social life, and after school activities. The transition for kids going from having about 68 students to over one hundred in one grade can be difficult adjustment. Melissa Mayo from Stevens Brook, and Landon Emery from Sebago Elementary spoke to us about their experience on the Team Kibby. They seem to be satisfied with their middle school experience. They have not seen any bullying at all this year in the halls or in the lunchroom. They do ask that the 7th and 8th graders should try to walk on the right side of the hall and be as quiet as possible so as not to interpret their learning abilities . They love being able to switch between rooms and being able get a little bit of energy out while walking to their next class. They really like having laptops, and having that kind of trust to be able to take them home. Overall our 6th grade students are pleased with their experience at Lake Region Middle School so far this year.

Student Council Representatives This is the first in a series of interviews with our Student council representatives
By Kate Rose Congratulations to Jo-Hannah Vincent for being elected as a seventh grade representative to Student Council.I was fortunate enough to be chosen to interview her for the Lake Region Middle School newspaper. Jo-Hannah feels very proud to be a part of our student council. JoHannah ran for student council for two primary reasons; she wanted to give back to her peers and school, and her family and friends motivated her to work for and achieve her goal. This year she plans to support many important plans for our school, including fundraisers for hunger, bully prevention, and stress prevention. Many students in seventh and eighth grade start getting stressed about homework and other issues. She believes we need to work on reducing this stress. IJo-Hannah is very proud to be a part of our LRMS student council this year!

Focus On Clubs: Girl Scouts By Allison Baker Are you the kind of girl who wants to do fun things and help your community? Do you want to express your love for the world while earning badges? Do you want to build your future with the help of your journeys? Oh, and did I mention selling COOKIES? If you have any interest in the things above, then you might be a perfect fit for Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts is a great after-school program that teaches girls how to change their world. If you would like to join Girl Scouts, then talk to your parents. With Girl Scouts, there are lots of opportunities to go on fun field trips all over Maine. (And sometimes even other states!) For example, in early October, my troop went to Acadia National Park for the weekend. Once with Girl Scouts I had a sleep-over at the Boston Museum of Science. So Girl Scouts go to lots of fun places. In Girl Scouts, we attempt to complete journeys, which teach the girls about life and choices and the future and other similar things. The journeys are difficult to complete, they teach
Book Review: The Messenger By Alex Kuvaja For those who have read and enjoyed The Giver and Gathering Blue, I would highly recommend the third book in the Giver series, The Messenger. There is a boy named Matty who lives in a village which mostly consists of people who have been cast out of their other villages because of serious injury and/ or disability. Matty lives with the Seer, or a blind man, who can glimpse into the future. In this village there is a place named Forest. This forest protects and keeps its inhabitants safe. If anyone goes into the forest they will be given a warning, if they should go into Forest a second time they will die. Matty is the only one who can safely enter the forest, so he is the village’s messenger. The people in the village are becoming angry and 2 impatient, so the village leader is going to close the village to people from outside. Find out what happens when the Seer sends Matty to retrieve his daughter before the village is closed to outsiders.
