The city of Lawrence on Feb. 11 celebrated its Culture of Health Prize, awarded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated exclusively to health. The national award recognizes community efforts to help people live healthier lives. Selected from nearly 350 communities across the country, Lawrence was one of eight winners. The celebration held earlier this month recognized “the extraordinary collaboration, cooperation, and support that brought the prize to Lawrence,” Mayor Daniel Rivera said. The YWCA of Greater Lawrence, in partnership with the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, Groundwork Lawrence, and the ValleyWorks Career Center, submitted the city’s application for the prize. “Health is in all policies, and when you truly understand that, then you can create a culture of health,” Vilma Lora, director of social justice initiatives at the local YWCA and coordinator of the mayor’s health task force, said in a prepared statement. “Everyone matters . . . Everyone has a voice.” Brenda J. Buote can be reached at
