Letter from the Principal Hi All! My apologies for not writing to you last week when the latest information came from Augusta and the Ed. Committee, but I have been out since Thursday. If you haven't heard the Education Committee voted not to use the Smarter-Balanced Tests in future years. This now needs to go the full legislature, but with a unanimous vote by the Ed Committee it is likely that the full legislature will agree with them. What does this mean: - This year's results will not be used to develop a baseline to determine school and student growth by school - The time and energy used in planning has been for naught - With 68% of our student-body already opting out from taking the tests our school results will now be meaningless - Individual student results will be meaningless as they will have nothing to compare it to. As I shared several weeks ago I believe that the Smarter-Balanced Tests would, in the long-term be helpful to schools and students. The tests are set up to help students better demonstrate their understanding and ability to think instead of just regurgitate facts, but that doesn't matter now as what is done is done. What are we going to do? Will we still give these tests tomorrow and Thursday? At present we have 177 out of 244 families who have opted their son or daughter out from taking these tests during our Redo & Retake Days the next two days. We are still planning to continue to give the Smarter-Balanced Tests to each student who's parents or guardians have not opted them out as this is still the expectation from our state. If you would rather have your son or daughter participate in our Redo & Retake Days tomorrow and Thursday instead of these tests and/or another planned activity as they are all caught up with their current school work please send in the attached form or email me with your request. Thanks! Please accept my apologies for not getting this note to you at the end of last week. My best,
Christian M. Elkington Principal Massabesic High School 88 West Road Waterboro, ME 04087
