Sen. Claire McCaskill 28 N. Eighth St. Suite 500 Columbia, Missouri 65201 Dear Sen. McCaskill, I am writing to share some of my concerns about climate change. First, let me thank you for voting against both Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State, and Scott Pruitt for EPA Administrator. While I’m disappointed that neither’s confirmation was prevented, I thank you for making it clear that you are concerned about the environment in general and the climate in particular. This is most appreciated. Now that Pruitt has been confirmed it is likely that we will see a full throttle assault on the very minimal steps taken to date to protect the climate, including the EPA Clean Power Plan and the Paris Climate Accord. Along with millions of our fellow citizens, I am looking to you to take an unambiguous position in support of these climate protection efforts. I also would like to encourage you to join colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support putting a price on carbon. Currently, the price of fossil fuels does not reflect the true costs of their use in terms of environmental harms, health impacts, climate change and the concurrent infrastructure costs that are already being experienced, and that will grow exponentially if action is not taken now. One way to do this is to support a revenue-neutral carbon fee and dividend program. This would create the incentive to be more energy efficient and the switch to clean energy. What is most important is to recognize that the Climate Crisis is an existential threat and a national security priority of the highest order. We need your leadership, Senator, both speaking out and voting to protect the climate. The lives of our children, our grandchildren, and their progeny all depend on prompt action. I hope to hear back from you and to learn what you propose to do to address this dire threat. Many thanks! Sincerely,
Sen. Roy Blunt 1001 Cherry Street, Suite 104 Columbia, MO 65201 Dear Sen. Blunt, I am writing to share some of my concerns about climate change. First, let me say that I am quite disappointed to learn that you vote in favor of both Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State, and Scott Pruitt for EPA Administrator. Given their track records, there is every reason to believe that their actions in office will be detrimental to the climate. They both dismiss or greatly discount the threat that climate change poses to us and our progeny. Now that Pruitt has been confirmed it is likely that we will see a full throttle assault on the very minimal steps taken to date to protect the climate, including the EPA Clean Power Plan and the Paris Climate Accord. Such actions will exacerbate an already very serious crisis that humanity faces. I am asking you to use your very significant influence and your vote to oppose overturning climate protection measures already in place. While this issue has been with us for decades, my concern is heightened by the fact that climate change deniers and dismissers, including both Rex Tillerson, our new Secretary of State, and Scott Pruitt our new EPA Administrator are in positions of great influence.
