A current school ID is required. - If the student and parent(s)/guardian(s) do not attend the student Chromebook orientation, the parent/guardian Chromebook orientation, and sign LPSS’s “Consent to Use Internet/Technology,” LPSS’s “Student Responsible Use Policy,” and the “LHS Chromebook Policy and Guidelines” agreements, then the student will not receive a Chromebook. - The Chromebook that the student is originally assigned will be the same device that the student is given at the beginning of each school year until graduation as long as the student is continuously enrolled at Lafayette High School. - Students will have the opportunity to purchase their own case, but it is not required. - If a student does not purchase their own case, one will be provided. This case must be returned with the Chromebook in useable condition. - If a student does purchase a case, it will the the student’s to keep even when the Chromebook is turned in. 1.2 Chromebook Return/Check-in - Chromebooks must be returned in working and usable condition. - Even though the same device will be returned to the same student the following school year, the Chromebook must be turned in at the end of each school year or when the student exits or withdraws for any reason from Lafayette High School. - The Chromebook and accessories (carrying case and charger) must be returned during the final two weeks of classes for the current school year (prior to final exams being given) so that they can be checked for serviceability. - If a student transfers or withdraws in any way from LHS during the school year, the Chromebook and all accessories must be returned at that time. - Students who graduate early, withdraw, are expelled, or terminate enrollment at LHS any time during the school year for any other reason must return their school Chromebook and all accessories (carrying case and charger) on the date of termination of enrollment.

2

1.3 Fees for Missing or Damaged Chromebook - If a student fails to return the Chromebook and/or any accessories (carrying case and/or charger) at the end of the school year or upon termination of enrollment at LHS, they are subject to financial liability until the Chromebook is returned or associated fees are received. - If the Chromebook and/or all accessories are not returned, the student will pay the replacement cost of each item not to exceed the replacement cost of the Chromebook. - Failure to return the Chromebook within 5 working days after exit or withdrawal from LHS will result in a police report for theft being filed with Lafayette Police Department. - The decision to file a police report will be made at the discretion of the school administration. - The student will be responsible for any damage to the Chromebook and/or any accessories unless the damage and repair protection policy has been purchased, consistent with LPSS’s Chromebook protection plan, and must return the device and all accessories to LHS in satisfactory and working condition. The student will be charged a fee for any needed repairs, not to exceed the replacement cost of the Chromebook and accessories.

  2. Taking Care of the Chromebook  2.1 General Precautions - The student is responsible for the general care of the Chromebook he/she has been issued by LHS. - The Chromebook is property of LPSS, specifically LHS, and all users will follow this policy and the LPSS “Consent to Use Internet/Technology” agreement and “Student Responsible Use Policy.” - Only use a clean, soft cloth to clean the screen. No other cleansers of any type. - Cords and cables must be inserted and disconnected carefully to prevent damage to the Chromebook. - Chromebooks must never be left in an unlocked locker, car, classroom, or any unsupervised area. - The student is responsible for keeping the Chromebook’s battery charged for school each day. - A Chromebook checked out to a student is the sole responsibility of the student. A Chromebook that is checked out to a student is NOT the responsibility of any LHS faculty member and should NOT be left with any school employee at any time. 2.2 Carrying Chromebooks - The protective carrying cases provided with the Chromebook has sufficient padding to protect the Chromebook from normal treatment and provide a suitable means for carrying the device within the school. - The following guidelines should be followed: - Chromebooks should always be stored and carried within the protective case and secured closed when not being used and when being carried from one place to another. - No other items (including folders, notebooks, papers, charging cords, pens, pencils, etc.) are to be stored in the carrying case. 3

-

Other items should not be placed on top of the Chromebook as any extra weight may crack the screen, even if the Chromebook is closed.

2.3 Screen Care - The Chromebook screen can be damaged when subjected to rough treatment, even if the device is closed. - The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure. - Do NOT lean on the top of the Chromebook when it is closed. - Do NOT place anything near the Chromebook that could put pressure on the device (this includes textbooks in or outside of the student’s backpack). - Do NOT place anything in the carrying case that will press against the device. - Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth. - Do NOT bump or hit the Chromebook against lockers, walls, car doors, floors, etc. as these actions may crack the screen. 2.4 Chromebook Care - Chromebooks that are broken or malfunction must be immediately taken to LHS Technology Coach for an evaluation of the equipment. - LHS and/or LPSS will be responsible for repairing Chromebooks that malfunction due to manufacturer's reasons. - Students will be held responsible for maintaining their individual Chromebooks and keeping them in good, working order. - Only labels or stickers approved by LHS or LPSS may be applied to the computer and any accessories. - Chromebook cases furnished by LHS must be returned with only normal wear and no alterations to avoid paying a case replacement fee. - Chromebooks that have been damaged from student misuse, neglect, or are accidentally damaged will be repaired. Students are responsible for paying the cost of replacement of the required part(s), not to exceed the total cost of replacement of the device. If an insurance policy was purchased, additional repair costs may/may not be required. This is to be determined based on individual situations and is made at the discretion of the school administration. - Students may be provided with a temporary Chromebook while their assigned device is being repaired if an extra Chromebook is available. This decision will be made at the discretion of the school administration. 2.5 Chromebook Identification - LPSS has the ability to track and identify each device. These identifiers are to remain intact and are not to be tampered with. This includes all external tags that are located on the device. - Students are not to deface, vandalize, destroy, damage, ruin, and/or scratch their Chromebook in any way. - If an LHS or LPSS tag begins to detach from the device, the student should take it to one of the school Tech Coaches immediately so that the tag can be resecured on the device. 2.6 Storing the Chromebook 4

-

When not in use, the Chromebook should be stored in a secure place, such as the student’s locker. Nothing should be placed on top of the Chromebook when being stored. Chromebooks should not be stored in a student’s vehicle at school or at home and should never be left unsupervised.

2.7 Chromebooks Left in Unsupervised Areas - Under no circumstances should a Chromebook be left in an unsupervised area including, but not limited to, the school campus, cafeteria, library, computer lab, classroom, locker room, restrooms, and/or hallways. - Any Chromebook left in an unsupervised area is in danger of being stolen. - If a Chromebook is found in an unsupervised area, it should be taken to the school library to be returned immediately.

3. Using the Chromebook  3.1 Chromebook Left at Home - If a student leaves his/her Chromebook at home, he/she is still responsible for completing any assignments as if he/she had their Chromebook present. In some cases, there may be computers available in the classroom for students to use, but not guaranteed. - Repeated violations can be considered willful disobedience and will be handled on a case by case basis by the grade level administrator. - A Chromebook will NOT be loaned out to students who forgot their Chromebook at home. 3.2 Chromebook Undergoing Repair - A Chromebook may be issued to a student if he/she has a Chromebook undergoing repair with LHS. There may be a delay in getting a Chromebook should the school not have enough to loan out. This decision will be made with approval from the student’s grade level administrator. 3.3 Charging the Chromebook’s Battery - Chromebooks must be brought to school each day in fully charged condition. - Students need to charge their Chromebooks each evening. - If a Chromebook loses charge due to use throughout the school day, charging options MAY be available in the classroom, but is not guaranteed or required to be provided by the teacher or LHS. - A fully charged battery should last more than 10 hours, but students may want to carry their charger with them in case the battery dies during the school day. 3.4 Screensavers, Background, Profile Photos - Any media deemed inappropriate by LPSS may not be used as a screensaver, background photo, or profile image. - Presence of guns, weapons, pornographic materials, inappropriate language, alcohol, drugs, gang related symbols or pictures are prohibited. - Inappropriate images or any other violation of LPSS’s “Student Responsible Use” policy may result in suspension of a student’s Google account, confiscation of the Chromebook, and/or disciplinary action. 5

-

This decision will be made on an individual basis by the student’s grade level administrator.

3.5 Home Internet Access - A student is allowed to connect to wireless networks on the Chromebook that is assigned to him/her. This will assist him/her with Chromebook use while at home. - Access to a wireless network outside of school is not required as student work completed in Google Drive is automatically saved to the Chromebook and uploaded the next time the device connects to a wireless network. - LPSS’s “Student Responsible Use Policy,” even when using a network outside of the LPSS domain can still result in suspension of the student’s Google account, confiscation of the Chromebook, disciplinary action, and/or legal action. This decision will be made on an individual basis by the student’s grade level administrator. - Students experiencing Internet/network issues at home should contact their Internet Service Provider (ISP) for support. 3.6 Legal Propriety - Students must comply with trademark and copyright laws and all license agreements. Ignorance of the law is not immunity. If the student is unsure, he/she should ask a teacher or parent. - Plagiarism is a violation of LPSS student code of conduct. Credit must be given to all sources used whether the information is quoted or summarized. This includes, but is not limited to, all forms of media found online such as graphics, movies, music, and/or text. - Use or possession of hacking software is strictly prohibited and violators are subject to discipline as referred to in LPSS’s “Consent to Use Internet/Technology” and “Student Responsible Use” policies. - Violation of applicable state or federal law may result in criminal prosecution or disciplinary action by LPSS.

4. Apps on Chromebook  4.1 Originally Installed Apps - The apps originally installed by LPSS must remain on the Chromebook in usable condition and must be easily accessible at all times. - From time to time, LPSS may add software applications for use in a particular content area. - Students will not be able to install apps on the device. Only apps pushed out by LPSS will be allowed on the device. 4.2 App Upgrades - Any upgrades to the apps installed on the Chromebook will be pushed out through LPSS. Students do not and should not attempt to update the apps.

6

5.  Student Conduct and Discipline  5.1 Offenses and Consequences - If a student violates any part of the above policy, he/she may have his/her Google account suspended, have the device and all accessories confiscated, and/or be subject to disciplinary and/or legal action. - The consequences for any violation of this policy and/or LPSS’s “Consent to Use Internet/Technology” and/or “Student Responsible Use” policy will be determined by the student’s grade level administrator. 5.2 Monitoring and Inspection - A monitoring software is used to scan and detect any inappropriate content in a student’s LPSS Google account, regardless of if the device being used. - Students may be selected at random to provide their Chromebook for inspection. If a student’s device is requested for an inspection, the password to unlock the device must be provided. - LHS and/or LPSS reserves the right to change the student’s password to access the account, confiscate the device, and/or suspend the student’s account for any reason at any time if inappropriate materials are found on the device and/or LPSS’s “Consent to Use Internet/Technology” and/or “Student Responsible Use” policies are violated.

6. Repairing or Replacing the Chromebook  6.1 Insurance - Insurance policies will be offered for the student to purchase by paying his/her technology fee. - For the 2017-18 school year, the freshman technology fee at LHS will be $15. - If a student opts to not pay the technology fee, the student and his/her parent/guardian will be held responsible for any costs to replace/repair a device that is damaged in any way or malfunctions for any reason other than a manufacturer’s defect. - While the technology fee may cover a wide range of issues, the student and his/her parent/guardian may still be held responsible for any additional costs to replace/repair the device. This decision will be made by the student’s grade level administrator. - Any loss (including, but not limited to, the charger and carrying case) that affect the function and/or operation of the device are the financial responsibility of the student and his/her parent/guardian. - Replacement/repair costs are based on a contract that LPSS has with a specific vendor and are subject to change based on the current contract pricing*. - For a Dell Chromebook 11 3120 Touchscreen, the current contract pricing* is as follows: - Power adapter - $24.99 - Battery - $44.99 - LCD Screen - $99.99 - LCD Bezel - $29.99 - LCD Assembly - $$149.99 - Palmrest Assembly w/ Keyboard & Touchpad - $69.99

7

*Please note that these values are current as of June 2017 and are subject to change upon an updated contract.

8

6.2 Claims - All repair/replacement claims must be reported to the LHS Technology Coach. - Students are not to bring the device to a third party to have the device repaired nor should they attempt to repair the device on their own. This will void any warranty and/or insurance policy on the device. - There is a one claim limit for damage to the device for students who have paid the technology fee. - Any additional claims become the financial responsibility of the student and his/her parent/guardian. 6.3 Parent/Guardian Responsibility - The student and his/her parent(s)/guardian(s) are responsible for the fees associated with any repairs or replacements necessary. - The student and parent(s)/guardian(s) should record the Dell Service Tag/S/N number, the six digit number from the silver LPSS tag, and the Lafayette High School Library barcode number. These numbers should be kept in a safe place for the entire period that the student has the Chromebook checked out. These numbers are to be used if the device is lost/stolen. - If a Chromebook is stolen and a police report is filed, it is the student and/or parent/guardian’s responsibility to pay for and obtain a copy of the police report and provide a copy to a school administrator within 10 business days of the report being filed.

7. Lost/Stolen Chromebook  7.1 Lost Chromebook - If the student loses his/her Chromebook, he/she should follow the steps listed below: - The student must report the lost Chromebook to school administration immediately. - An attempt to locate the Chromebook will be made. - If the Chromebook cannot be found, the tag numbers from the computer can be used to attempt to track the device. 7.2 Stolen Chromebook - If the Chromebook is stolen at school, the incident should be reported to a teacher/school administrator immediately. - An attempt to locate and/or track the device will be made by the school. - If the device is unable to be located, then a police report must be filed by the student. - If the Chromebook has been stolen anywhere besides the school’s campus, it is the student and/or parent/guardian’s responsibility to report the theft to his/her local law enforcement agency immediately and then to school administration on the first day (start of day) that students return to school. - Once a police report has been filed, it is the student and/or parent/guardian’s responsibility to pay for and obtain a copy of the police report and provide a copy to the school administrator within 10 business days of the report being filed. - When filing the police report, the student and/or parent/guardian will have to provide the police officer with the Dell service tag (S/N) number, the six digit number from the silver LPSS tag, and the Lafayette High School Library barcode number. 9
