The Lion’s Roar Issue 3 November 2016 LaSalle Intermediate Academy 2701 W. Elwood Avenue South Bend, IN 46628 Phone: 393-4700 Fax: 283-7513 Office Hours: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM Dear Families: The football season for Notre Dame has been iffy but the Cubs are in the World Series. Leaves are changing and the stores are even starting to put out . . . holiday decorations! Fall Break is here and gone and we are already finished with the first quarter of school. The time seems to be flying! I love the month of October and I love decorating for every season, but especially for fall. I have hosted three fall parties this month, including taking 18, yes 18, teenagers to the Niles Haunted Scream Park followed by the entire 18, yes, 18 spending the night in my basement. All in all, the aftermath turned out to be very minimal – a few pop cans here and there, but the trash cans were utilized and the boys did a great job keeping down the noise and not making too big of a mess. The kids were great. So many of the boys are friends my children have known since Kindergarten. I feel like some of them are part of my own family. Last Saturday evening I had my daughter’s choir over for hot chocolate and a bon fire. Again, it was a wonderful group of kids and I enjoyed providing a safe environment for high school students to hang out and socialize with one another. They were extremely polite, well-mannered, and we had a great time watching the Cubs! My kids are getting older and I sometimes grapple with giving up some of the fun activities we used to do together when they were little, especially during this time of year! They don’t want to carve pumpkins anymore and the hay rides and corn maze just aren’t “scary” enough. I will be honest; I sometimes get downright depressed when my kids just don’t want to participate in activities that used to be yearly customs. I wrestle with finding ways to spend quality time with them because in a teenager’s world, spending time with Mom is just not as cool as it used to be. It’s hard not to take it personal when they would rather hang with friends than hang with me. One strategy that I have used for a long time is morning breakfast. Every now and again, when I can get up extra early, I take my kids for an early breakfast. Nearby our house is a small, local “mom and pop” hangout that serves wonderful pancakes and French toast. I drag my kids out of bed, they moan and groan, but by the time we get there, they perk up. It is during these morning breakfast times, I have great conversations with my kids. In the evenings after working a long day, and after the kids have been at school all day, we are just tired and our evening conversations can be quite dull. The breakfast conversations just seem to go better. My kids love having me drop them off at school afterwards and honestly, I just start my day off on a positive note. There is something special about having morning breakfast. I aim to do this once per month. Some months are better than others, but believe me when I say; this time is valuable and precious, especially for a working parent like me. Parents, I would also recommend finding a great “kid” group for your children to hang out with. My daughter belongs to her school choir. They are a good group and I love hosting events. I get great enjoyment out of watching a nice group of teenagers hanging out. Now, having said that, I also have to stand back and not “hover.” My daughter is a senior and so having your friends hang out with Mom is not very cool. I am honored she is open to having the choir to the house. So, I host, provide the food and pop, I greet and do several walkthroughs, but overall, I hang back and let the kids socialize without hovering too much. There always has to be a balance between supervising, setting appropriate rules and boundaries and letting kids be kids. As we move into these next few months, and the holiday season, I hope you will set aside a special time to spend with your middle schooler. In fact, November 8th there is no school due to Election Day. That would be a great day to go to breakfast! I already have it on my calendar. We might sleep in a little that day, but we will be at our normal breakfast spot. I am learning that the LaSalle community is full of wonderful staff, students, and parents! Let’s work together to value the time that we have with our special students. Parents, put that date on your calendar  Peace, Ms. Ehmer

Art Room Happenings November is election time and the art room is in the swing of things. The sixth grade classes will study campaign art and create campaign posters. We are sure to expect some winners that show art with a message! Seventh and eighth grade students will build from learning about space and distance and expand to space and perspective. They will be learning about one and two point perspective and studying the work of Thomas Moran and Josephine Trotter. As always, we are looking for any unwanted artificial flowers or floral arrangements to use for still life drawing. Any donations would be greatly appreciated in room 114. Have a great November.

Student Council Food Drive Student Council is sponsoring a Food Drive for the Northern Indiana Food Bank from October 31st through November 18th. We will continue our tradition of donating just before the Thanksgiving Holiday. In addition to non-perishable food items that we normally ask for, we are also hoping families can donate personal hygiene items as well. We also ask that students not bring in glass items. It’s unfortunate when the glass breaks in the barrel and ruins other food items. We have made a tremendous impact on hunger and the Food Bank depends on our food drive every year. Every pound of food donated is the same as three meals for someone in need. The next Student Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 10th from 3 to 4:30pm.

Volunteers Remember all parents and volunteers are required to have a background check on file in order to volunteer in the school building, to eat lunch with your child, or to attend field trips. If you need a background check form, they are available on our website (under the Parents Tab) or in the main office. Please allow 2-3 weeks for processing.

Students in the eighth grade class are learning about personal finance and how to plan for their future. Activities that assist in preparing for the future are: creating a timeline for their future and understanding the life events that can add expense to their budgets. Students will be creating budgets and estimating future spending based on their chosen career. In the 7th Grade Exploring College and Careers, students are gaining knowledge about career clusters and recognizing the numerous career opportunities that exist in the cluster. Students are beginning to pick areas that they might be interested in for the future. Students have explored “green jobs” as well. Green jobs are jobs associated with the environment and help to grow sustainability based on air, water, and soil. Mr. Mark Ruledge is the Junior Achievement volunteer guiding the students in the exploration of careers.
