COR also offers professional development through training and leadership fellowship to promote leadership development. WELCOME TO THE LMSA SOUTHEAST CONFERENCE Hello everyone! It is our pleasure to welcome you to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the 7th Annual Southeast Region Conference of the Latino Medical School Association. We are delighted to host speakers, workshops leaders, students, physicians, and advocates from all over the southeast that have contributed to this event. This year the LMSA SE executive board is excited to explore our theme, But you don’t look latino/a: Across the United States, Hispanic physicians work hard in their communities every day to address the health care challenges unique to Latinos. We have prepared a series of workshops that investigate the impact of diversity and cultural competency in medicine by dismantling the idea that all Latino physicians look and practice the same. Latinos face major health disparities, we hope to bring together all healthcare professionals to address these disparities and find unique innovative solutions. We have also dedicated a series of programming focused on professional development and success at every level of education. Our southeast region was established in 2009, since then we have grown significantly to encompass more of the southeast. Our established chapters continue to develop and contribute to our region. Our executive board has also grown and continues to work on sustainable projects to increase our participation in policy, mentorship, and service. We are also in the preparatory steps into a major overhaul of standardizing all positions nation wide with the ultimate goal of strengthening our organization nationally. We hope to continue this growth, and further increase the resources for the members of our region. We encourage you to consider further involvement in your own chapters as well as our regional board. Your ideas, motivation, and passion are what enable us to offer great opportunities to our growing region. We appreciate the support of San Juan Bautista School of Medicine, the hard work of the Regional Cochairs, and the entire region. Welcome to all LMSA members: We are more than pleased to have you in Puerto Rico for the 7th Annual Southeast Region Conference of the Latino Medical School Association, and appreciate all efforts by all those who have contributed, so that this event takes place in our island. This year’s theme, But you don’t look Latino/a, has created excitement and great enthusiasm among all participating. There are many myths about Latinos, but it is not a myth that there is diversity in our culture, in our health needs, in our physicians, in our professionals, and all have to be considered and included as a race with many common traits. Involvement of all healthcare professionals is of great importance in order to place us at the same level of all others. KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Juan Amador, CAE Director, Diversity Policy and Programs Program Leader, Group on Diversity and Inclusion Association of American Medical Colleges Juan Amador is a director in the Diversity Policy and Programs (DPP) department of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). In this role, Mr. Amador directs the development of programs, tools, and resources that advance diversity and inclusion for the faculty, staff, residents, and students at U.S. medical schools. Mr. Amador also provides strategic vision and programmatic leadership for the AAMC Group on Diversity and Inclusion (GDI). He works directly with deans, faculty, and other leaders in academic medicine to develop solutions to the challenges of integrating of diversity and inclusion throughout academic medicine. He advocates for interventions that advance the inclusion of underrepresented populations in academic health centers. He is also responsible for implementing learning and leadership opportunities that help members grow in their professional roles, enhance their career development, and strengthen their leadership competencies. Mr. Amador previously managed the AAMC Minority Student Medical Career Fair, which is an annual event that allows high school and college students to learn about medical school admissions requirements, listen to panel discussions about the pathways to becoming a physician, and meeting admissions, diversity affairs, and financial aid officers during a recruitment fair. Mr. Amador has over 15 years of experience in recruitment and outreach to special populations, strategic planning, developing partnerships, and facilitating the work of national committees. Prior to joining the AAMC, Mr. Amador worked for the National Prevention Information Network (NPIN) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He earned his B.A in Health Science and Policy at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and he is a certified association executive.

John Paul Sanchez MD, MPH Chairman, NHMA Council of Young Physicians Assistant Dean, Diversity and Inclusion Assistant Professor, Emergency Medicine Office of Diversity and Community Engagement Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Principal Investigator, Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians Initiative, www. bngap.org Dr. Sánchez has worked extensively to promote diversity and inclusion in the physician and academic medicine workforce. Dr. Sánchez serves as P.I. of the Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP) Initiative; developed in partnership between Einstein’s Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE) and AAMC Diversity Policy and Programs. BNGAP’s mission is to help diverse medical students and residents become aware of academic medicine as a career option and to provide them with the resources to further explore and potentially embark on an academic medicine career. He also serves as Chair of the Council of Young Physicians and Board Member of the National Hispanic Medical Association, and as Executive Secretary for the Hispanic Serving Health Professions Schools. Dr. Sánchez is the Past-Chair of the Einstein LGBT Steering Committee, of the Office of Student Affairs at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Einstein); a committee charged with promoting a supportive climate for LGBT students (including M.D., Masters, Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral students) at Einstein. He led the committee in developing a graduate level Safe Zone Program and in integrating LGBT content in medical and resident education. In 2012, he joined the Board of the Center for LGBTQ Studies of the City University of New York (CUNY) to help the Center in broadening their educational and research activities to include health related content. Additionally, he serves as Course Director for a LGBT Health course offered to college students at CUNY. Dr. Sánchez received his medical degree from Einstein, completed his residency training at Jacobi/ Montefiore, and is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. He also holds a Masters of Public Health, with a concentration in the epidemiology of infectious diseases, from the Yale School of Public Health. He is of Puerto Rican ancestry and was raised in the Bronx, NYC. 20

GENERAL SURGEON, (MAPMG), ASSISTANT CHIEF, DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY Dr Khambaty is a California native who began her medical career at Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1996. She completed a surgical residency at Howard University Hospital, Washington DC. Following residency, she joined as a staff surgeon at the

Professions Schools (HSHPS), she works to improve the health of Hispanics through academic development, research initiatives, and training. Additionally, she serves as the Principal Investigator on several HHS, OMH, and VA grants and coordinates several activities including: The National Mentorship Program, Graduate Fellowship Training Program, Faculty Development Workshop, and How to use Data to Improve Hispanic Health Workshop. Most recently, she has participated in a initiative titled Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians of Einstein’s Hispanic Center of Excellence.

Northern Navajo Medical Center, a Navajo reservationbased hospital which gave her a unique exposure to rural surgery. She then moved to Eritrea, East Africa to work for a Virginia- based non-profit organization, Physicians for Peace in 2007. In Eritrea, she was a staff surgeon at two public hospitals in the capital city, Asmara, and helped to start and run the first general surgery residency program in the country. She subsequently returned to the United States in 2010 to complete a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at George Washington University, Washington DC.

DR. ELLIOT MELENDEZ, MD BOSTON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Dr. Meléndez, a Puerto Rican from the Bronx, and a graduate of the Harvard Medical School’s (HMS) Class of 1999 cum laude in a special field, currently provides care to children at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH). Getting his start in medicine came with a twist, having started his educational career as a high school dropout. Despite this, he attended Lehman College-City University of New York, graduating cum laude. He did

his pediatrics training at Boston Children’s Hospital, and went on to do two subspecialty fellowships in Pediatric Critical Care and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Dr. Meléndez serves as the associate director of safety and quality in Division of Medicine Critical Care and EM. He is active in clinical research, studying specific biomarkers in sepsis to assist in prognosticating outcomes. He is a member of the Diversity and Cultural Competency Council and has been honored with multiple teaching and mentoring awards; most recently by the “Milagros para Nino’s”.

DR. DANIEL TURNER-LLOVERAS, MD NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE CORPS Daniel Turner-Lloveras, MD, is a National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholar working as a primary care doctor for the most underserved of Los Angeles, California. His other clinical responsibilities include working as a locum tenens hospitalist in the Southern California area. Over the past several years, Dr. Turner-Lloveras has published articles and chapters in clinical textbooks as well as original

DR. VANESSA SALCEDO, MD, MPH, FAAP CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR OF PEDIATRICS Dr. Salcedo received her MD and MPH from George Washington University. After medical school, Dr. Salcedo became a Fulbright Scholar where she conducted research on the growing prevalence of childhood obesity in Spain. Subsequently, she completed her residency in Pediatrics at Columbia University Medical Center.

DR. VICTOR CUETO, MD MED-PEDS RESIDENT MILLER SOM Dr. Cueto received his medical degree from the Drexel University College of Medicine and is currently completing his residency training in Internal Medicine & Pediatrics at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami. His research interests and community involvement are centered on community health education, health literacy, cultural competence, undergraduate

manuscripts in leading cardiovascular and general medicine journals on topics including Latino health, global health,and cardiovascular disease. In addition to his clinical work and research he is fascinated with health innovation/ technology and has worked helping develop health related startups.

During residency, she was selected as a New Century Scholar for the Academic Pediatric Association (APA) while also serving as Chair of the Council of Residents and Board Member of the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA). Dr. Salcedo is a community-academic pediatrician at St. Barnabas Hospital, Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she is committed to implementing childhood obesity prevention programs in underserved areas of the Bronx.
