Welcome to the Leisure World Tennis Club Revised: April 9, 2017

We would love to have you join our club! WELCOME TO LEISURE WORLD TENNIS We’ve put together some information that may help you with your decision to join us, or if you have already joined, it will provide a brief orientation of Club functions and contacts. We want you to feel welcome on the tennis courts, and we would love to have you become a member of our Leisure World Tennis Club and join us in our leagues, invitational and in-house tournaments, round robins, casual tennis, and our many social events. GENERAL INFORMATION Leisure World (LW) has twelve tennis courts available for use by all LW residents and their guests. Appropriate tennis attire, including a shirt or top cover and non-marking shoes, must be worn on the courts at all times. Please observe the Court Use policies posted at the courts. CLUB CONTACTS for general information are listed on the last page of this brochure. TENNIS CLUB MEMBERSHIP The Leisure World Tennis Club currently has 311 members. There are three types of membership, with dues covering the period of October 1, 2017 through September 30, 2018. There are no part-year dues. 1. A FULL (playing) membership entitles a member to all benefits of the Club; dues are $40. 2. A SOCIAL (non-playing) membership entitles a member to Club social activities; dues are $15. 3. An HONORARY LIFETIME membership is bestowed on a member for exceptional and lengthy service to the Club, and entitles that member to all the benefits of the Club and the waiver of membership dues. Questions on membership may be addressed to our membership chairperson, Rick Lowderman, at (480) 7677952 or [email protected]. Membership application and dues payment instructions are available in the Courthouse and on our website. Fees for FULL and SOCIAL memberships are assessed annually, and are due and payable October 1. The Club publishes a directory each year containing the names and contact information for all members, Club by-laws, court policies and procedures, court reservation policies, meeting dates, committee chairs, important dates for In-house and Invitational play, and various social events sponsored by the

Club. Dues received on or after April 1 will be applied to the following membership year. If the annual dues are not paid by December 31, members not renewing will be dropped from the club and will not be included in the annual directory. TENNIS CLUB MEETINGS The Tennis Club hosts regular business meetings between October and April, normally on the second Wednesday of the month in the Rec. 1 Ballroom at 4:00 p.m. (Starting the 2017 - 2018 LWTC season the meetings will be held in the Club Room.) The Annual Meeting is held in March. All members are encouraged to attend these meetings, as the agenda items impact all members. Included are officer/committee reports, information on tournaments and upcoming events, discussion of Club policies and procedures, and business requiring a membership vote. TENNIS ACADEMY The primary goal of the Tennis Academy is to provide FREE beginning tennis lessons to any LW resident who wishes to learn the game in a fun, non-intimidating atmosphere. Lessons are given from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm every Wednesday, starting the first week in November and ending the first week in March. Instruction is provided by teaching professionals Helle Sparre, Melissa Tofoya, and Academy Director, Marge Willadsen. An experienced core of volunteer, advanced level club players provides assistance and encouragement to the students. Loaner rackets are available for those needing equipment. The Tennis Academy is a great venue for meeting new friends, having fun, and learning the fundamentals of the game. For further information, contact Marge Willadsen, 712-299-4470, email [email protected], or check the bulletin board at the courts.

PLAYER SKILL RATINGS New members wanting to play in League, Round Robin, In-house, or Invitational play will need a “skill rating.” If interested, please contact our Rating Committee Chairman, Ted Rieder (480) 275-7876 or [email protected], and he will arrange a skill rating session with other players. You will be assigned a level from 1.5 (beginner) to 4.0+, depending upon the skill level demonstrated during the playing session. Advancement or maintenance of levels for (EVSTL) league players is determined by your League record. Non EVSTL players may periodically request to be re-rated for In-House, Invitational, and Round Robin play. A “skill rating” is not required for Potluck or social play. A rating is not critical or threatening; it is simply a means to place you in matches with other players of similar skill levels.

POTLUCK From October 1 through April 30, from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m., Monday through Saturday, courts are reserved for Potluck (“drop-in”) doubles play. Players at the 1.5 and 2.0 skill levels are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to gain more game experience. You’ll play with both women and men, regardless of skill level. After playing four games on a court, players rotate out so that waiting players can rotate in. Potluck provides a great

opportunity for individual practice, meeting new friends, and playing with different people. You can work on your tennis skills in a non-competitive game situation, learning while playing some fun, social tennis.

GROUP ROUND ROBIN PLAY Group Round Robin play provides an opportunity for all LW Tennis Club members to play organized, social tennis with a group of people at their level on a regular basis. Round Robin sessions are structured around three halfhour sets with rotation among partners and courts. Initial partnerships are determined by random draw. Men’s and women’s Round Robin play is scheduled one day each week (November through April) for each playing level, 1.5 through 4.0. You must be a Full Member to participate in Round Robin play. Sign up is electronic, and will be open on a “first-come” basis until all spaces are filled, with additional spaces designated for alternates. You must sign up at your rated level, but may sign up as an alternate one level above. Sign up is weekly. Instructions can be found on the LWTC website referenced under LWTC Websites. There is no fee for Round Robin play. The Group Round Robin coordinator is Clay Hainstock, (480) 275-5572 or [email protected].

TOURNAMENTS In-house and Invitational tournaments are scheduled periodically on Saturdays. Invitational tournaments are played with another Club, hosted by either the LWTC or by the other community/park. Information about upcoming tournaments is sent to the Club members via email approximately four weeks prior to the event. Interested players find a partner and enter their names using the LWTC tournament registration website (http://lwtennis-001-site1.mywindowshosting.com/register.aspx.). You may sign up to play a maximum of three matches in Men’s, Ladies, and/or Mixed doubles – in any combination. The play schedule (time, court, and players for each match) is usually posted the Wednesday before the tourney date. The matches normally are limited to one hour and may be a “Pro 8” format, in which the first team to win eight games wins the match. There is no charge for playing, but you must be a FULL member to play. Selected food and beverages are available for breakfast and lunch. The host Club provides the match tennis balls, food, and beverage items. For LW hosted tournaments the LW playing members are requested to bring luncheon food items or pay a lunch fee. LW player guests may also sign up prior to the tournament and pay a lunch fee.

EAST VALLEY SENIORS TENNIS LEAGUE (EVSTL) Leisure World, along with fifteen other East Valley parks, participates in the EVSTL, with scheduled weekly matches at all skill levels. Play begins the first full week in November and ends the first full week in March, with a two week holiday break in December. This is friendly competition, which encourages our members to work to improve their playing skills, occasionally progressing to a higher skill rating level. FULL club members who are at least fifty years of age, have received a skill rating, and reside in LW are eligible to play in this league. The LW EVSTL Rating Committee Chairman will place you on a team at your skill rating level. At the 3.0, and 3.5 levels we have two teams, reflecting the number of players at those skill levels. A team will normally alternate weekly

between playing “home” and “away” matches. A separate fee to play in the EVSTL is established at the October Club meeting to cover the cost of game balls and breakfast items, which are furnished each week during play at LW. Our opponents furnish the same items when play is at their park. Members remit their fees to the EVSTL Treasurer listed under CLUB CONTACTS. (Payment can be deposited in the Dropbox at the courts.) There are also several tournaments during the year hosted by various EVSTL parks for players in the EVSTL. Information regarding sign up and payment procedures will be posted prior to each tournament, and a separate fee is charged the participants for each tournament. Our East Valley Coordinator is Hans Hoogendam (see CLUB CONTACTS).

SUPER SENIORS 75+ LEAGUE Those at least 75 years of age or older are also eligible for the 75+ League, which plays on Saturdays from 10:30 am until noon, November through March. Please see our website for more detailed information. Sign-up is on the Round Robin website (both websites listed below). If interested, contact our 75+ League Coordinator, Sydele Milgrim, (480) 325-3435 or [email protected] for further information/sign up.

SOCIAL EVENTS The Club hosts a number of parties, dinner dances, and other events throughout the year beginning in October and concluding in March. Different Club EVSTL teams are charged with the responsibility to plan and host an event. Dinners can be catered, prepared by the hosting teams, or potluck. Dinner dances usually begin with a social hour (BYOB), followed by dinner and a dance with music by either a live band or a DJ. There is a separate fee for most social events, and payment for these events should be put in an envelope marked with your name(s) and designated event, and placed in the drop box on the east wall of the Court House. These social events are great fun, and are a perfect way to meet and make new tennis friends. Member guests are welcome.
