KCS MAGNET SCHOOLS

What are Magnet Schools?

All KCS magnet programs begin in August 2017.



KCS magnet programs are open to students in any KCS elementary school.



KCS will offer transportation to all students enrolled in its magnet programs.



Space is limited in magnet programs. KCS will accept applications to fill available slots. If there are not enough spaces to accept all students that apply, KCS will use a lottery system to select students for its magnet programs.

Open to all students Magnet schools are open to students from across the KCS district. Students do not have to live within the magnet school’s attendance zone in order to take part in a magnet program. However, they must be enrolled in Kannapolis City Schools. Space is limited in all magnet programs, so KCS will accept applications beginning in January of each year. If there are more applications than available seats, KCS will use a lottery system to select students for magnet programs.

High academic achievement Even though magnet schools focus on a specific subject or theme, research shows that students who attend magnet schools excel in all subject areas.

G.W. Carver Elementary G.W. Carver Elementary will become the home of the KCS A+ Arts magnet program. A+ Arts is the largest, longest running, and most successful arts-based magnet program in the nation. Schools with the A+ Arts program teach the state’s standard curriculum while weaving the arts into each aspect of a child’s learning.



EARLY JANUARY: Application window opens

FEBRUARY: Completed magnet program applications due to KCS



EARLY MARCH: Magnet lottery to fill available magnet program slots



MID MARCH: Families notified whether their children are accepted into a magnet program or put onto a waiting list

Here are features of the KCS A+ Arts magnet program: 



Fred L. Wilson Elementary Fred L. Wilson Elementary will become the home of two KCS magnet programs: Global Studies and Spanish Language Immersion. The two programs work together to give children a strong global outlook and prepare students for success in an international economy. Here are features of the Global Studies and Language Immersion programs: 

Both programs offer high quality instruction in all subject areas, including reading, math, science, and social studies



Both programs have been shown to raise overall student success and reduce achievement gaps.



Both programs include current KCS teachers as well as teachers from the Visiting International Faculty Program.



The Global Studies program will include all Fred L. Wilson students beginning in August 2017. The Spanish Language Immersion program will begin with Kindergarten students in 2017 and be phased in over several years.
